We have an opportunity to trade into St. John for the first week in September. The resort is VERY small. The Sunset Ridge Villa's. Any comments about the island or the resort would help us decide. What do you do at night? Not looking for more then good dining and some nice place for drinks. Is the island easy to get around? Any concerns traveling at night? We have never been to St. John or St. Thomas so don't know what to expect. Thanks for helping us.IP: Logged |

TAKE IT!St John and St Thomas are 2 totally different experiences. St Thomas is heavily commercialized and hasn't been safe to run around at night in at least 15 years. St John on the other hand is one of the safest islands you will ever vacation on. The island has 52 beaches and is 2/3 national park land. There are no large chain stores. Excellent restaurants. You will drive on the left but it isn't too difficult to adjust. Sunset Villas is only about 8 units. All 2 bedrooms with a shared pool. Located in the hills ( Steep but paved. Rent a jeep.) overlooking Great Cruz Bay. No air conditioning but I believe there are ceiling fans. You will not regret this rare opportunity to visit and fall in love with StJohn. Joe,I don't know much about the Sunset Ridge Villa's but St John is very beutiful. We stayed there (WSJ) in January and loved every minute. There is a very good post/review in the Hotel-based Timeshare thread. http://www.tug1.net/tugbbs1/Forum6/HTML/001465.html This particular post talks a lot about the Westin but has some great island information. Both the caribbean and HBTS threads have a lot of information on St John. Good luck, John IP: Logged |

Don't hesitate - take the trade! Even if you only spend nights there sleeping it's well worth the trip!!!Deb IP: Logged |

A great site for info on the Virgin Islands and St John is VINOW.com. The bulletin board folks are great at answering questions and giving recommendations.Do not ever hesitate to go to St. John. It's probably safer than many small towns. Don't expect much night life, though. We're leaving tonight for our annual TS experience at WSJ. Hope you find the island as wonderful as we do. We traded into St. Johns 2 years ago and it was one of our best vacations. We stayed at the Westin, so we can't help you with your resort. We went into town almost every night and walked around. Try the Lime Inn for a good place to eat. I don't think you will be disappointed. One thing to keep in mind is that driving in St. John is not for the faint at heart. The hills are very, very steep and there are sharp turns. We saw quite a few fender benders though. It was rather fun for us since we are adventurous but it was quite scary at times. Of course we traveled the whole island and visited every beach! Can't wait to go back and next time we'll spend 2 weeks.Gloria IP: Logged |

We have stayed at both the Westin and SSRV on St.John. These are your only 2 choices for timeshares on the island. We actually liked SSRV better because of the seclusion, view and space. And I almost forgot you have your own "dip" pool plus a very large pool no one ever used for the 6-2 BR units. There is no A/C but its location provides you with tradewinds and there are ceiling fans everywhere. DO get a 4 WD vehicle and specific directions, especially if you will be arriving when it's dark. It's not easy to find. Also take binoculars. E-mail me if you have any questions. We have been to almost every Caribbean island and St. John is our favorite. Our cell phones also worked without extra charges. If you go there with an open mind, not expecting the Ritz, you will love it. Our unit was clean and the beds were comfortable but there were a few maintenance issues. Just be aware that September is the peak of hurricane season, no matter where you go in the Caribbean.Carolyn IP: Logged |

We own at Sunset Ridge, and will be back on the island in December. You will enjoy St. John's. Night life is a bit limitted. Find out where the music is early and plan accordingly. 4 Wheel drive is a must, cause the roads get slick after brief showers. The beaches on the NW side of the island are incredible. If your a good snorkeler, check out Waterlemon bay, and the island just off the bay. Cinamon Bay has some nice rental toys (hobbi cat, etc) Want a private beach? Try to find "Bruces" beach. It somehow stays out of the tour books. It takes a short hike, but it is worth it. Go to Caneel Bay and ask if you can go to the public portion of the beaches in that bay. Sea turtles in that area... Happy hour? We like the place just South of the main Dock in Cruz Bay. Good shrimp and fish baskets. Painkillers... and sometimes small live music... The first time up the hill to the resort is an eye opener. It's steep and narrow. Take you time, stay on left and you'll be fine. Get directions or follow someone. If you're back to the resort before 3:00 you will have the pool to yourself for an hour or more. If you like to listen to music, bring your own player. The unit only has a radio. Day trips to the BVI? Check out Virgin Gorda and the "Baths" or head up to Jost Van Dyke. You can take a ferry or rent your own powerboat, or jump on a charter. Diving? Caneel resort has a great dive shop. Sailing? Do a google search for Capt. Josh Dohring. He has a 36 cat and will take care of your group. Enjoy your trip. You'll want to come back! Jeff
