When you finish reading this archived post, you should be able to determine methods for travel from the Pocono Pa areas to NYC via car (rt 80), rail, or bus) (editors note)Phils' post starts below: We check into Depuy-Shawnee in the Poconos tomorrow afternoon. We'd like to try a day trip to Manhattan, and possibly catch a matinee. Some questions: 1. Do Wednesday matinees still exist? 2. We'd like to drive partway in, park our car, and catch a train the rest of the way. Where should we try to leave the highway and find a train? 3. Half price tix - What are they called in NYC? 4. Which half-price booth is most accessible from the subway system? We can use Mapquest to get our actual directions, so we don't need that sort of detail. I guess more than anything we need suggestions for getting into the rail system quickly and with reasonably safe parking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ------------------ Phil [This message has been edited by KenK (edited 06-27-2002).]

We'd like to drive partway in, park our car, and catch a train the rest of the way. Where should we try to leave the highway and find a train? Rt 80 East. Go here: You need train sch & times www.nj.com/njtransit Fletch points out bus might be easier: http://www.martztrailways.com/index.html Note: Phil found a Wednesday shoppers special to NYC Theater district (from Shwanee Area) for 1/2 price R/T See below. Call now to check & book, as they run out of room 3. Half price tix - What are they called in NYC? Look here: www.hitshowclub.com - and TKTS stand is right across street from MARRIOTT Marquis (good place for toilets & maybe lunch- go to lobby floor. TKTS will not take checks or Credit Cards. About B'way & 46/47 Street. It is mot a killer walk from Penn Station (34th St) Martz Trailways lets you off about one block from TKTS (Wednesday shoppers special from Shawnee area.- also special price. Sells out- call in advance) Check Eastern Boards for latest update 4. Which half-price booth is most accessible from the subway system? Only one is TKTS (unless you go downtown & back uptown again)

PMFJI, but my advice would be to ask the Front Desk folks at Depuy-Shawnee. There are many people who have homes in the Poconos and commute to NYC via carpools and buses. Though you can probably be directed to and easily find a railway station at some point along I-80, you may want to consider bus transportation as an alternative. Traveling down to Trenton from the Poconos would be going out of your way considerably, as there are no good direct interstate routes.I would also suggest picking up an area map just to double check MapQuest. On occasion, I've found their information to be a bit off. Have a great trip! Sharon (located in Eastern PA) [This message has been edited by DVCOKW93 (edited 06-08-2002).]

Martz into NYC Port Authority Bus Terminal, which is on block from times Square area (about 42 St), and one (or 2) blocks from B'Way. ing Both trains from Port Jervis NY, and Dover, NJ will leave you in Hoboken- which means another exchange (its not hard).I think it time to petition the NJ branch of the National Association of RR Passengers to get that service back up from Easton, PA, or even stretch it to Allentown/Reading. All I see in the NY newspapers are builders & realtors pushing big beautiful (the pix are beautiful) houses for (only) 147,000 to 230,000 in the Pocono area. They don't mention the fun on Rt 80 trying to get to work. They say the mortgage at todays rate is $934 a month. A two bedroom rental apt were we live (a standard - not lux) about 45/ 50 miles from Manhattan is $1000 a month. ( 1 mile to rail). ------------------ Ken K

Phil- looks like it didn't post right. I don't know if you were going to leave from Park & Ride, or another place. When you go to MARTZ SCH- go to leave from NY (for return). Then use scroll (up down arrows). It says Wall Street -NO Then 14th St - NO, then NYC (which i assume is the Port Authority on 41-42 street.)It wouldn't load right on mine , but the scrol works. 1-800-432-8069 Martz-Trailways Lines Check the one day excersions- $46 on june 15 to Wall Street & South Street Seaport. We decided to make a dry run today to make sure we knew where we were going, and it turned out to be a good idea. Here is what to do from Shawnee.Get on I-80 E and take the last Penna exit, Delaware Water Gap. Keep right and take the first right turn, which comes up fast and is hard to see. Follow that road to signs for 611, get on 611 and watch for the Martz sign that comes up fast on your left. You are there. The usual round tripn ticket price is $42.05, but Gail found a "shopper's special" available only Wednesday and Saturday. Depart from Martz at 800 am ($3.00 parking to leave your car there). They claim it is a one hour ride to 46th and 6th, but I suspect it will be more like 90 minutes. The return bus leaves at 700pm. Tickets are only $27.95 for this special, and I suspect we got the last three, or close to it. Calling in advance is definitely a good idea. We could not get three seats together. Thanks again to everyone for all of your help. I think this is rhe sort of thing that TUG does best. ------------------ Phil

There is an easier way to get there. From the Depuy units, turn left out of lot onto River Road. Keep going as straight as you can. The bus station will be on the left in about six minutes. Strangely, trying to retrace those steps when returning is almost impossible.------------------ Phil

Definitely worth it, though the bus left about 25 minutes after the scheduled time. Several other NYC bound buses at the same time, but with the Shoppers Special tix you cannot take those. Also, the trip was a bit longer than advertised, but we pretty much expected that. The bus stopped about 2-3 blocks from the TKTS booth, where the lines wrapped around seemingly forever. We'd decided to see Urinetown, but when we finally got to the window all that they had were obscured view, so we saw Noises Off instead. It was very interesting to see a professional production of a show I directed myself (quite unsuccessfully) some years ago. Patti LuPone, Peter Gallagher and Faith Prince. ------------------ Phil
