Christmas week in Kauai -- compact car. Would $250 week all inclusive be good? If not, what is a fair expectation?IP: Logged |

Have you tried www.orbitz.com ? I just searched 12/24>12/31 for LIH and found a compact w/Budget for $180-all in. Probably can get it for less with priceline. Also, I can send you an Entertainment Book coupon if you need it.Phil IP: Logged |

I'm paying $301 w/taxes but no insurance for a midsize at Alamo for 15 days at Easter. You should be able to do better than what you found. www.samsclub.com has good rates too. I have a discount code that says it's good through 02/2006 but it didn't work on Christmas week. ID# 371630 and Code FB87 . The Sam's Club rate is showing Budget for $180 and midsize for $198. Directly o Budgets website a midsize car for your dates with taxes is $170. A compact is $5 cheaper. Keep checking the rates because we went at Christmas and had a good rate but they may not be running their sales yet. If you have a Platinum Card and don't take any insurance through the car rentals it's supposed to be covered. Call and confirm the rules with your card. Also it's much cheaper to add through your home car insurance. [ [This message has been edited by wauhob3 (edited 02-13-2005).] IP: Logged |

Thank you. I didn't include info that we are staying until Jan. 7 and Orbitz, etc. have not expanded their rate info to that date yet.The other problem I ran into is that our AA plane gets in after 10pm (usually) and online reservations won't take my inquiry because they are closed at 10pm. I'll try the suggestions. Mahalo again. IP: Logged |

I just did a price comparison for the last two weeks of June for Kauai and this is what I came up with for a full size (DH is 6'3" and isn't comfortable in a smaller car).2 weeks, including tax, etc.: Alamo - $356 Budget - $398 National - $402 Thrifty - $427 Avis - $507 Dollar - $532 Hertz - $547 ------------------ Denise [This message has been edited by dbmMayer (edited 02-13-2005).] IP: Logged |

Do any of those rates include both husband and wife as drivers? When we last did Priceline it was a great rate, but we paid extra for both of us to be able to drive. LizIP: Logged |

I know budget includes spouse and an extra driver at no charge. I also know alamo charges for extra drivers, the others I'm not sure about.IP: Logged |

Sorry - but I didn't check, since we don't usually go that route. But these weren't from Priceline, I just went to each agencies online website and plugged in our dates.

Liz: On Priceline -- (1) how did you bid and have assurance you couldn't have done better by checking car rental websites? (2) How far out from when you needed the car did you start doing Priceline? (3) Did you have another reservation as a back-up?I have always been 'afraid' of Priceline and would appreciate as much detail on how you did it as you would care to share! Just rented, hopefully a Mazda 6, (don't want the 'or other' ...) from Hertz on Maui May 1-8 for $190.57 using a Hawaiian Airlines code. Tried Costco & Interval and they came up, effectively the same, but we get bonus miles with Hawaiian. Never again Alamo., even at substantially less money. Later for Kauai, as I'm not certain of the specific week, prior to or after Maui.IP: Logged |

I have been researching car rental rates all morning for the Big Island in December. For what I can tell so far this is who charges for extra driver and how much: ALAMO- $7.00 per day, extra driver MUST show up at pick up to show ID BUDGET- Spouse free and need NOT be present at time of rental NATIONAL-$11.00 per day, spouse or extra driver MUST show up at terminal to show ID at time of rental AVIS- Possible one time charge of $25.00 per extra driver, need NOT appear when renting car THRIFTY- Policy unclear DOLLAR- Policy unclear If I am mistaken on any of this, feel free to correct me. I am a bit cross-eyed from all this time spent on the computer. To make sure yourself, click on "terms of rental" on the rental site. Not having to have your spouse or extra driver present when renting the car is an extra perk for us, as one of us takes off for the car as soon as we land and the other one waits with the kids for the luggage to appear and then waits at the curb to be picked up by. I hate to shelp all the luggage accross the airport or on a shuttle. Also the line seems not as long if you go right away. Gayle IP: Logged |

The Mustang is a cute sporty, little car, but it is very small and has no trunk space. We had one in the islands summer before last and would never get on again. The trunk won't even hold 2 carry-on size suitcases, because the convertible top takes up most of the trunk space. Last summer we got a Sebring convertible and it had much more room and trunk space. If only the two of you are going, and you aren't tall, you will be OK with the Mustang, but if there are more than 2 of you, you won't all fit in the car with your luggage.

Did you go through HA's website or just use their code? Mind sharing it? When I researched my prices above, I also checked HA's website, because we are flying with them, but the price was higher than going directly to the agencies' websites.

dbmMayer, Here are the Hawaiian Airlines codes, but they are on a coupon included with their newsletter and are through Sept. 30. It says call Hertz 1.800.654.2210 and provide your HA Miles membership no. I did ours on Hertz Web. For weekly rentals the codes are: PC 959383 CDP 1037681 (weekend rentals PC 959372).Also, a few minutes ago, a Hertz e-mail arrived, which said beginning March 1, one can specify make & model at no extra charge. Maui & Honolulu airports included. Think I'll try to do that. Isn't this game fun? IP: Logged |

I thought I'd been checking my Hawaiin Air flyers, but must have missed this. Does anyone know who Costco works with? Cathy, when we went to Kaui two years ago at Easter I think I bid $15 or maybe $20 per day on Priceline and got it, but paid extra for additional driver. I think it was thru Enterprise. I don't remember when I bid, and no we hadn't made a back up reservation at that time. LizIP: Logged |

Costco works with Budget, Avis and Alamo, you can go thru their web site www.costco.com for a quote. For two weeks at Christmas on the Big Island for a full size car with two people driving I got the following quotes:Budget $352.08 On Orbitz $439.00 Avis $473.48 On Orbitz $543.00 Alamo $352.53 On Orbitz $372.00 (One driver only on Orbitz) These include all taxes and fees and in Alamo's case, the extra driver fee for 14 days. Alamo was $285.52 for one person only driving. Gayle IP: Logged |

It is small, but it's worth the sacrifice. There's actually 4 of us going - 2 adults and 2 children (10 & 6). I drive a Honda Prelude at home, so the Mustang seems big compared to my Prelude. I love small cars - hate big ones. My wife drives the mini-van and I avoid it whenever possible. On our last trip, in 2003 we had a Mustang on Maui - the kids and I crammed as much stuff as we could in the trunk and the front passenger seat, and a few small pieces in the back seat with the kids. My wife took a shuttle from the airport with another bag and a carryon bag. On the Big Island, we had a Sebring, and for the trip from Waikoloa to Kona International, we had every available crevice in that car packed with luggage or a person. We've always had a convertible in Hawaii and it wouldn't seem like Hawaii without a convertible. This year, we have a Mustang on Kauai, and Sebrings on Maui and the Big Island. On Maui, we're flying into Kapalua instead of the main Maui airport, so we can make a couple trips to and from The Embassy Maui to the airport which is only 5 - 7 minutes away. On one trip, we turned in the convertible the night before we left and rented an SUV for one day to take everything back to the airport the next day. What we found, though, was the cost of the convertible didn't drop since 6 and 7 day rentals are usually at the same weekly rate. What we should have done, was keep the convertible and just rent a economy or compact for one day at a cheap rate as a "luggage cart". My philosophy is you only need a big car to go too/from the airport, so why force yourself to slug around in an SUV or minivan for 3 weeks when you can have an open top in paradise. Was just able to get a reservataion on Priceline for Kaui, July 8-15 for $18 per day plus fees. it came out to $176, but it looks like we'll be adding $77 for an additional driver. Hertz can get us $299 total including both drivers with AAA club membership. Budget was $276 before fees and taxes and included both drivers. I tried $18 on the Big Island at Hilo and it was accepted, but I am going to try again in a week on Priceline. LizIP: Logged |

Checkout WWW.sidestep.com They do comparisons of rental car rates and airfare costs semi-automatically, where ever you plan on visiting. We rented a car from Dollar in Maui last week for 122.50 (Dodge Neon). Also, call your insurance broker to see if you are automatically covered for liability insurance, etc. when you rent a car, thus avoiding insurance coverage from the rental car company that you may not need.IP: Logged |
