I need a super strong sunscreen for Virgin Gorda next week. I am taking an oral medication that makes my skin more sun sensitive. Do you have any favorites? Are there any you wouldn't recommend? ------------------ Mary IP: Logged |

Not sure if others here are fans, but I always bring windsurfing shirts for my boys. They seem to be inpenetratable by the sun. Worked great in Aruba - I dont even put sun screen on the areas that the shirt covers......LAR IP: Logged |

Look for the spf level 50 sun screens and you should do well. You can get a lot of different kinds but in the end it's the Spf rating that counts most. Note that for best protection buy fresh sunscreen. After a year old we throw it away. It does tend to expire as far as it being effective. It's not something you can smell or see. The sun that far south is exceptionally strong and you want all you can get. I only use 50 myself. Near the water you can do a serious job on yourself in just a few hours. My approach is spf 50 and find a palm tree. Bring it with you as I find it is hideously expensive when you get there. ------------------ Windjammer landing, St Lucia; Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, Cabo, Villa Del Palmar, Cabo/PV IP: Logged |

I like Coppertone "Sport" the best, but I believe it only goes to SPF 30. It dries quickly, is not greasy, seems to hold-up in the water and it doesn't have a horrible smell. I've heard lots of good stuff about Bullfrog so would probably try it if Sport wasn't available. We saw lots of people wearing the shirts on our recent trip to Hawaii (some long-sleeve and both children & adults) so they must be gaining popularity. I would prefer a decent sunscreen and hat, and that palm tree, though

My dermatologist recommended "Blue Lizard" or some weird name with the word Blue in it. It is really great. LyndaIP: Logged |

I use Waterbabies by Coppertone, "#1 pediatrician recommended with an SPF of 45. Supposed to work for 80 minutes in the water as well. Never had a problem, but I do reapply. And reapply. Also - RIT dye makes packages (Sun in? or something like that) that you can easily wash your clothes in and give them an SPF of 15 or 30 ( i did it before Hawaii 3 summers ago, I've forgotten which ) - I used them for shirts for myself and the kids for extra protection. Doesn't harm clothes or have a smell... IP: Logged |

Ditto vote for Coppertone sport. Clear spray, not the white goopy stuff. Works great for us "baldies". ..Mark

Coopertone works well if you want the convenience of a spray. But real protection is Bull Frog. I like "fluffy" ones (Bain de Soleil, etc.) for every day. But I do outdoor sports a lot, and hands down, it's Bull Frog when I really need sun protection.IP: Logged |

Banana Boat.... they do sports sunblock (stays on in the water)... it may be about the least expensive, but living in Cayman I have tried many, and Banana Boat is about the best------------------ www.thereef.com.ky IP: Logged |

Another vote for Coppertone Sport. I use SPF 30 and have not had any problems for the last 15 years. We go to very hot tropical places on average of 3 times a year and I swear by it. It is very good in or out of the water. I used to get awful sunburns before I started using it. In addition, "Aloe" is great to soothe your skin in the evenings after a long day in the sun. There are many good brands of aloe gel on the market. Most of the makers of sunscreen market a good aloe as well. I discovered aloe about 20 years ago in Hawaii. I had a terrible burn on my neck from playing golf and not being careful. One of the hotel staff cut some aloe plants and brought it to my room and told me to rub it on my burn. It was a miracle, the burn went away completly and I have sworn by it ever since. The commercial versions work just as well and they have the added benefit of not smelling awful like the raw plant itself. Harvey IP: Logged |

MAke sure that any sunscree you buy has at least one of the following listed in Active Ingredients:Titanium Dioxide Zinc Oxide Parsol 1789 Without one of these, you are protecting your skin from burning but you are NOT protecting from skin cancer. Flip the bottle to the back, skip the inactive ingredient list, and check for one of these. If it doesn't have it - go on to the next brand. Even within brands, some types have it, some don't, so be sure to READ carefully. If your skin is very sensitive, you should look at the Neutrogena face sunscreen. It has the protection you need and does not irritate the skin when applied. Avoid any with alcohol ------------------ Janis IP: Logged |

I use Banana Boat Sport SPF 50. I live in South Florida and golf 3 to 5 times a week. It works extremely well. Don't forget your legs. People ignore them (I used to also until one of my golf buddies had a huge cancerous bit removed from her leg) but you shouldn't. LindaIP: Logged |

I'd concur one should get UV A protection as well as B, as these will provide. If one can find the clear Zinc Oxide (they do make it), that is a great choice for high risk areas. The Colored ZO is also great for kids.------------------ Dean My Home Page IP: Logged |

Hmmmmm, I don't quite understand your statement. Neutrogena does not have any of this: - Titanium Dioxide - Zinc Oxide - Parsol 1789 Do you have a link that provides any scientific data to support this idea? IP: Logged |

BULLFROG!!!!! Trust me on this one, it's environmentally friendly and won't come off in the water and won't hurt the reef. You will only need to put it on once, maybe twice if over 6/or 8 hrs of direct sunlight. A fair skinned redheaded scuba diver instructer turned me on to this. I have never ever burned using this. The link given above will direct you to a good article on the UVA/UVB issue. THe last time I bought the Neutrogena Sensitive Faces, it definitely had the proper ingredients. It may have been avobenzone (also known as Parsol 1789) or oxybenzone. I wasn't looking at the bottle when I wrote the email - I just remembered that it passed the UVA/UVB test ------------------ Janis IP: Logged |

....Since PABA and PABA esters only protect against UVB light, check for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that also screens UVA rays. Ingredients like benzophenones, oxybenzone, sulisobenzone, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and avobenzone (Parsol 1789), extend the coverage beyond the UVB range and into the UVA range, helping to make sunscreens broad-spectrum.....
As the link indicates, the list of 3 active ingredients should be EXPANDED to include the following: * benzophenones * oxybenzone * sulisobenzone * titanium dioxide * zinc oxide * avobenzone (Parsol 1789) * and more This means that Neutrogena (8% active ingredients), Banana Boat (3.4% active ingredients), Bull Frog (4.5% active), Coppertone, and others meet this criteria. Go HERE for info on lots of other sunblocks.

Hi, OP here. I had to call my dermatologist (another side effect of this medication -- hair loss!)He recommended Blue Lizard. But he said it's harder to find. He said I should use the Face one on my face. Duh. I'll let you all know the results. We'll have 14 people in our group. ------------------ Mary IP: Logged |

My kids would like the Blue Lizard. The link said that the bottle changes color in the sun! I might try the one for the FACE. Does anyone else get a tingling sensation when they put regular sunscreen on their face? Don't have any problems with the rest of my body, just the face.------------------ MAW - Hawaii/Kauai Photos IP: Logged |

Mary,Whatever you settle with use the highest SPF you can find. I generally use spf50. Whatever you do make sure you do use it, and try to stay in the shade as much as possible! Last year I had a sinus infection and got a prescription for zyphromax (sp?). The last day of my medication I was out in the sun for about 30 minutes (with shorts and a T-shirt) and I got the worst burn I've ever had. This was in March (it was about 82F) and I wouldn't normally even gotten any color from this short of exposure. Due to the medication I was extra sensative to the sun. Use high spf and reapply often. Have fun, Mike IP: Logged |

Buy SPF 50. I have used quality waterproof sprays and creams 15,30 and 45 SPF and got sunburnt each time after 2 hours in tropical climates with strong rays the last few trips. I just used 30 SPF spray in the Bahamas and got an awful case of sunpoisoning on my leg which swelled up pretty bad for 4 days. I had cankles for sure. We bought new lotion this time after reading a prior thread about effectiveness before that I just used the same lotions. Also for Aloe gel make sure about alcohol based ingredients as they will make your skin much drier and horribly leathery. Someone posted about a cream solution awhile back but I can't the name now. My husband get pretty bad burns on his forehead and after using Aloe gels for a few years I realized that poster was right about the alcohol contents. IP: Logged |

Bull Frog, Coppertone Sport 48, Head Hunter, Fruit of the Earth Block up 45, Banana Boat By all means pick up a long sleeve "Rash Guard."
