We will be staying on the Hyatt Hacienda Del Mar June 4-12. It will be my husband, myself and our two boys 12and 14. What things should we definitely do, not do? We will definitely go to the rain forest and golf. I would like to go snorkeling also. Are there any good snorkeling companies or spots? Where should we get our groceries? Where is the best beach? I am getting a little worried because the weather looks like rain, rain, rain!! Thanks so much in advance!! Sue IP: Logged |

We exchanged into Puerto Rico last Thanksgiving through DAE to ESJ Towers, which is very convenient to Old San Juan and located on one of the best beaches on the island, Isla Verde. There was a large grocery store within walking distance and a bus that stopped right outside the resort that took one into Old San Juan for 25 cents. My wife spent a good part of two days shopping in Old San Juan. The historic old town, even without shopping is well worth a day or two. The Bicardi rum distillery across the bay is also an interesting way to spend a couple of hours. We spent half a day at the rain forest, and enjoyed it. We drove to Ponce, but its historic area was a let down after old San Juan. IP: Logged |

Sue-If you are heading to the rain forest, you might want to spend part of the day at Loquillo Beach near there. I have always loved that area. Another thing I liked was visiting the radio telescope in Arecibo. It is a bit of a drive, but well worth it for anyone who has any interest in science. Another idea ia a day trip by ferry from Fajarado over to Vieques or Culebra. Sue, you guys will have a wonderful time. As for groceries once you get out of the complex you will have to either make a left or a right, make a left proceed all the way down and soon you will find a mini mall on your left. You can pick up- a few items there. The tropical rainforest El Yunque (el yoon ke) is a nice drive heading to the east side of the island, your routes heading out there will be PR 22 join PR 26, then PR 3. When you are heading out there, especially when you are coming out of PR 26 (this is the airport road that runs east and west known as the Baldioroty- bal/dee/ree/o/tee...route 26 or PR 26 .....please note stay on your left 2 lanes or better yet stay on your left lane if you do it will keep you going on the right track heading east. to join PR 3) it will join with PR 3 this road is heading east to Fajardo (fa har doe) there is a mall called Plaza Carolina Mall which you will see on your left, now as you proceed easterly aproximately 9 traffic lights down you will see a 24-hour Walgreens on your right side and the next traffic light there is a mall called Los Colobos has everything you can think of. (Home Depot/Kmart/Sam's/ restaurants/Dunkin Donuts/Huge Super Market called Pueblo, Theaters, Fast food restaurants) Well everything you guys might need is there. So El Yunque will be on your right side you will see signs saying Yunque which wll be towards your right. El Yunque El Yunque Tropical Rain Forest with a total area is 28,000 acres has an estimated 240 types of tree, and many other plants, such as tiny wild orchids, bamboo trees, giant ferns, and trumpet trees. Hiking trails and rest areas available. El Portal Tropical Forest Center has film exhibits and interactive displays about the rain forest. Open daily 7:30am a 6:00pm. Route 191 Km. 4.2 Luquillo (787) 888-1880 Now further down the road heading east will be Luquillo Beach which of course will be on your left side the exit will be on your right. You will know you are there because before you go up on a slight uphill on the PR 3 road you will see about 40 or more Kiosks on your left that specialized on seafoods.( Believe me you wont miss it). Okay now where you guys will be staying if you were to turn towards your right heading out of the complex there is another Beach area Called Cerro Gordo.. Se/row Gore/doe) just up ahead. Now if you are interested in Bioluminescent Bays then you have to check to see if there will be a full moon or not, (You are in luck you have picked the perfect time to come down to Puerto Rico to enjoy this awsome tour)check out this website then: http://www.rainforestsafari.com/biolbay.html
Hope some of this helps out. Joe ( Yes and for some of you guys it has been awhile since I have written, just been extremely busy and getting to move back to the good ole USA again from Puerto Rico) Bacardi Rum Plant Bacardi Rum Plant is the largest rum distillery in the world, processing some 100,000 gallons daily. The tour includes a trolley tour of the distillery and bottling plant, a museum and a free rum cocktail. Tours thru the plant are available. Free admission. Route 888 Km 2.6. Catano (787) 788-1500

Oops! That reply was not finished before I pushed the button!! Anyway... thanks so much!! Joe, how long of a trip is it from Hyatt Hacienda del Mar to the grocery store on the way to the rainforest? Could we actually go there on the day we arrive to get groceries, or is there somewhere else more convenient? We will definitely make the trip to the rainforest, we are just not sure when. First I would get to the HYATT then when you are leaving Hyatt make a left hand turn (this road is a 2 lane road one direction and the other direction) proceed all the way until you see a mini mall towards your left hand side. But also there are a lot of small grocery stores in the town known as colmados (coal ma doe s) in the town of Dorado (Doe rod doe) (which is the name of the town where the Hyatt is). JoePS. sorry for the late response. And have a great time. ------------------ Say NO, to A76! [This message has been edited by SJU/AIFSS (edited 06-02-2005).] IP: Logged |

Hi!A nice snorkeling trip is on the EASTWIND out of Fajardo to Icacos and Palomino Islands on the east coast of PR.When you get to HDM ask the front desk for a QUE PASA magazine. There are all kind of neat options there.Jessica Cintron, the concierge can help you book any trips or make restaurant reservations for you. She's very helpful AND knowledgable.Your kids are going to love the resort.River pool, lighted minigolf, basketball court, bicycles, horsehoe pits, tennis, you name it.The Cerromar Beach hotel is closed down next door to HDM so you have all the amenities to yourself. There's a great Asian restaurant and a Johnny Rocket's for the kids. There's a casino for the adults and miles of beaches you can walk at HDM and Dorado Beach.Have fun! Are you planning on renting a car? I hope so because the transportation by the resort is lacking. Try to get a high level room - GREAT view. The pools are fun. The food there is not great - many of the restaurants are closed. We used take out from the Chinese restaurant - very good.
