Hi,
Anyone familiar with the Carabola Beach Resort in St. Croix? If so, any pros and/or cons? Many thanks, Martin

My hubby and I just returned from a week at the Carambola on a trade through RCI. We were there from May 7-14, the beginning of off season, and there was virtually no one in St. Croix. Almost had the island to ourselves it was so quiet. The units at Carambola are showing wear and age and are very dark, but the resort itself has very friendly staff, great food and drink, very nice pool and oceanfront beach (rough waves though). We had a great time but didn't spend much time in the unit. The Robert Trent Jones golf course associated with Carambola is very nice... we played there 3 times and once at the Bucaneer. Carambola golf course was much nicer. There are a lot of great restaurants all over the island. Let me know if you need more info. We did meet another couple staying at Carambola and they upgraded their unit to an oceanfront and said it was very nice, but if you're looking for luxury, this isn't it.

Martin,
My info. is probably about 8 years old (at least), but hubby and I stayed there pre-t/s. We had a standalone villa that was nicely done, but it wasn't a t/s. Believe we were there in July, and it was dead. However, that can be nice. At that time, the rooms were well maintained, and he did a shore dive right in front of the resort (so-so). Our favorite spot was an alfresco bar (can't remember the name) that was on the island side of the road on the way into Carambola. You could grab a stool and have a drink and look out over the water. Not my favorite island, but ya never know--might have been my mood at the time.

Thanks folks. Those reviews don't really get one terribly excited about going there. I believe that I will keep looking, elsewhere. Thanks again for your most valuable advice. Martin

We stayed at Carambola Beach about 5 years ago and really loved it. It was a little long in the tooth but was tansitioning from Westin (I think) to Sunterra and they were going from hotel to timeshares. We loved the resort and the golf course and many surrounding areas and restaurants. Sounds like they never fully transitioned. St Croix has been hit by hurricanes and other unrest. I don't think they will ever fully recover. Here is a website with information on some of the probems of St Croix. I am a little bit apologetic because I believe this author is off base in his comparisons and has sensationalized some things but he does have accurate information on the "St Croix Fountain Valley massacre"

This was before anyone had exposure to any terroist actions but it stuck with me nonetheless. It was a big deal at the time but it has died down over the years.
