We have a week planned on Provo for Sept. We couldn't get into Alexandra with a timeshare but we did get an inexpensive II "Getaway" into Coral Gardens.

A couple of questions please:

1. I have read a quite a bit about needing a 4WD to get some of the better snorkeling spots and in general to see the island. Do you normally get a 4WD for the week? Do you need it for general touring or only for certain remote destinations?

2. We also want to get to some of the other islands, including Grand Turk. Are there other modes of transport to GT besides air? It seems bit far for a slow boat but are there any ferries to the other islands?

Werner-

We spent 2+ weeks on Provo about 18 months ago where we were married on the beach. The car rentals are pretty expensive as compared to most Caribbean islands. We decided on renting the cheapest small automatic car with A/C. Another couple with which we became fast friends, Sandy & Clay Lovell, nicknamed their similar car, “the toaster". Except for one beach on the far side of the island, we were able to get around everywhere. VERY BUMPY ROADS AND NO ROAD SIGNS. I expect the main road is much better by now, in that it was under construction at the time and was a major problem at the time due to the construction that should now be completed even by island standards. We had a free 2-day 4WD that we used for the day we wanted to go to the Tiki Huts at Malcolm’s Beach.

Patty, Thanks for the reply. It looks like a small 4WD is a little less than $100 more than a small car for the week. If you had a small car and then rented a 4WD for a one day excursion you come up about $20 short of just renting the 4WD for week. (Turning in the car for that one day puts you on a daily rate and doesn't save any money.) Plus you can take back road excursions anytime.

As to the second question... Any advice about getting around to the other islands, especially Grand Turk?

You can do a day trip to Middle Caicos to see the limestone caves. Then they take you to the other side of the island to a beautiful beach for lunch. We went through Silver Deep. J&B Tours had a boat leave at the same time. You also stop at Little Iguana Cay on the way there.

We leave for Turks & Caicos in 32 days!! I can't wait!!!! The island is too low key for some people, but I just love it there. Have fun!

Oh, as I recall, Silver Deep (and probably others) might run a boat down to Grand Turk. It'll probably cost the same either way.

Werner,
I don't have personal knowledge of this, but I picked it up from a website.

Ferry Service- Turks and Caicos Islands
The Dale Marie Weekend ferry service between Bottle Creek on North Caicos and the west tip of Middle Caicos. Scheduled runs beginning Saturday morning 8:00 am from Middle, running through early afternoon. 30 minute ride each way, carries 1-2 vehicles. $20 round trip for a car, $2 round trip for passengers. Friday evening and Sundays by appointment.

Salt Cay Buccaneer Passenger service between Salt Cay and Grand Turk. 30-45 minute ride, Wednesday, Friday, weather permitting. Can deliver cargo, pick up groceries, make special trips. Departing Salt Cay Dock at 7:00 am and departing Grand Turk dock at 2:30 pm. Price is $12 round trip.

I found the ferry sites. Salt Cay is off Grand Turk so the ferry is local to GT. The other ferry is local to Provo and close by islands. I think GT is too far away from Provo for a standard ferry and the business is probably not there for a high-speed catamaran or hydrofoil. Air Turks and Caicos has round trips from Provo to GT for $120. That's probably the only way.

Thanks for the suggestions

I think I saw the ferry docked @ Middle Caicos. You're definitely right - it's not a high speed catamaran ;-)
