WE're driving into Rome on a Saturday and want to avoid as much traffic as possible and of course getting lost! We need to get to the area near the Spanish Steps. Drop possibilities are Via Del galoppato 33, e

This isn't directly related to your issue but may of help to those dropping off cars at Rome's FCO airport. We picked up a car in Naples and had to drop it off at FCO, never having been to FCO previously.

We had a lot of difficlty finding the auto return area until we asked a policeman. The problem is that you get to see the auto rental return signs (quite small at that) only once you enter the (covered) parking area.

IMHO it is absolutely impossible not to get lost in Rome when driving. I did it once and will never do it again. If the drop off is near the Spanish Steps, and mine was as well(europe rent a car) my recommendation would be to stop a taxi driver. Hire him to go to the rental return and follow him. For the added cost it might save you hours of frustration.

If you can possibly avoid it don't drive in Rome. We stopped on the outskirts and got great directions from a police officer to our hotel which was just a couple of blocks from the train station. We were taking the train to Munich the next day. We still got lost. Finally found the hotel but by this time I was a wreck. My husband dropped me with the bags at the hotel and the streets are so narrow we had all these upset people honking horns and yelling at us. It took him another hour to drop the car and walk back to the hotel as all the streets were one way and seemed to just go around in circles so he had trouble getting into the train station lot. Not Fun.

By the time you get to Rome you should be comfortable driving. We STARTED our Italy driving in Rome - picked up the car on VIA Sardenga (just off the Veneto), and the access to the Autostrade was pretty easy. Don't forget to take a ticket at the Toll booth when you enter the Autostade, as it is very expensive if you don't!

We found driving in Rome OK - But Florence was another matter, with all of those one way streets that are all restricted. Ended up driving beside the Duomo where the pedestrians are only allowed (with the help of a police officer!)

Well, we chose to go into Fiumicino, and had no problem. I think it would have been AWFUL to drive into any urban location (this decided after getting downtown). Anita
