Adding....The hotel use is unrelated to the FF miles use. You can sit on the FF miles and use the hotel certificate. Or use them for different trips. Or use the FF miles and turn the hotel certificate back to Marriott for a credit of 45,000 to 55,000 points, depending on which award you request. And the 25% Hertz discount certificate is as close to worthless as any coupon you will ever get. It's not valid for many discounted rates that you can get with a variety of discount codes readily available here.

Thanks. I remember reading about the Hertz discount...basically useless. Going with the travel package is by far the best value for points expenditure. Do you have to return the hotel certificate back for points immediately, or can you wait for a period of time and do it later? I'm fairly confident I will go with the 083 award.------------------ Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living; the world owes you nothing, it was here first. --Mark Twain IP: Logged |

If you decide to return it, you can return the certificate for credit any time before it expires. There is a nominal fee for doing so.IP: Logged |

But isn't the hotel voucher non-transferrable? Won't they ask for identification when you check in? I didn't think you could sell them.IP: Logged |

More than you ever wanted to know...I'm not sure about Marriott's policy regarding selling certificates, but there doesn't appear to be anything in the Marriott Rewards Terms & Conditions that would prohibit doing so. However, if you decide (for example) to give a certificate for a hotel stay to your sister or friend, you can ask for the award to be issued in that person's name. If you already have the certificate, you can send it back to Marriott with a note asking that it be reissued in the appropriate name. It's as easy as that! You can get confirmation of Marriott's policy on that. Call Marriott Rewards at 801-468-4000, enter your Marriott Rewards number at the prompt and then press "0" at the prompt to talk to a rep. Then ask if you can do as I state you can. There is a slightly different answer, I believe, for the various bonus stay certificates (e.g., "X-14wknd") that many people earned last year for hotel stays. Those certificates state that they are "non-transferable". Even so, many (according to FlyerTalk.com) have given such certificates to others, who have had no problem using them. When the other person has a different last name, make the reservation in the joint names of the person named on the certificate and the person who will be using the certificate. Either can show up to "check in first". A respected Marriott employee who posts at FlyerTalk confirms that this works.

It's funny, because when you go to order the cert, within the message prompts they say cert are not transferable several times, and then they say " if you want to put the cert in someone else's name, push 3". In my situation, it worked out very well, indeed. The cert came to me, Daniel B. C/O Joe Cambra. "Giving" the cert to someone else is definately much better than turning it back for points. In my case, I could have used the cert, but why not use the money I received for the cert and buy the nights myself, getting all the points into my account, at no cost to me. Actually I did alittle better than break even. A cat 6 cert could retrieve anywhere from $1500 to $1800, based on eBay historical data. Regards. Joe IP: Logged |
