Netflix is $17.99 per month compared to blockbuster at $14.99 for 3 DVD's out at a time. Blockbuster gives you two coupons each month for a free in-store movie or Game rental. The next big difference will be shipping turn around time and that all depends on where you live and how close the nearest distribution center is to you. In my area both have excellent shipping times on most movies. If your requesting older movies or titles that only have a min number of copies and the closest shipping center does not have it at the time it will be sent from one that does and that often adds shipping time. Both offer free 2 week trials and I suggest you take each of them for a test drive to se what works better for your area.

Not to make matters more complicated, but just to let you know there is another option: Walmart. (We have been happy with their service, however, since I have not been a member of Netflix or Blockbuster, I cannot compare.)IP: Logged |

I've been a member at both. Just cancelled Netflix. I like Blockbuster best because of two reasons: the in store coupons and the turn around shipping time. It only takes one day for the shipped movies to reach me and vice versa. As for the coupons, this month they gave me coupons for: (2) Free movie or game rental Buy any 3 Nestle products for $3 B1G1 Free Previously viewed DVD movies $5 Gift card with a $25 Gift Card Purchase On the negative side: Blockbuster doesn't seem to have that many movies to go around. It seems like there's always a "short or long wait", for new releases, especially. I never had that problem with Netflix-- even with new releases. I would do what the previous poster said. Try them both out. Then pick out which one is the most suitable for you. Good Luck~ ------------------ *~Trish~* Check out my Journals at RCI Community. I'm in SJ also and have Blockbuster. If I mail the movie back Monday morning, they get it on Tuesday, ship out on Wednesday and I have a new one on Thursday or Friday. Once it took as long as Saturday, but that could be the post office. It does seem that the children's movies I order might come from a different distribution center than the others because I can see online that they have shipped, but they take a day longer. You can see online when they have received it, and when they ship the next one. I never tried Netflix - I went solely on price and the 2 in-store coupons for last-minute movies. p.s. I alway try to mail back on Mondays because new releases come out on Tuesdays and you have a better chance of getting them (this advice was from my sister who has Netflix in the Sacramento area).------------------ Brenda IP: Logged |

We have Netflix and love it. In my area the turn around is a day wait. I mail it out they get it the next day I recieve my move the day following. I like having my list of movies online so they just ship me my next in que. Once in a while I go in and put new movies in or rearrange my que. I also like the fact that I can put movies in that are not released yet. It will say not relieased until such and such a month and when it get close if it is a movie I have been really waiting to see I move it to the top of my que and I get it as soon as it is released.Theresa IP: Logged |

We love netflix. We generally receive movies within two days. If we send movies back on Wednesday, we usually have them on Friday. Like the other poster, we put new releases in the queue and get them as soon as they're released. Never had a problem with shipping or anything. Love netflix.IP: Logged |

We've had Netflix for about 3 years. Their service is great and they have about 8 different plans starting at $9.99 a month for one movie at a time, unlimited rentals per month. Next is $11.99 per month for 2 movies at a time, 4 rentals per month. It goes up from there to 8 movies at a time, unlimited rentals. So there are many, many choices depending on how many movies you rent. We don't rent as many now that we also have Tivo.We live in San Francisco and I just mailed a return on Saturday. I got an email this morning that they've received it and are sending the next one on my list today. I'll have it tomorrow. Can't do any better than that, and it's always been that way. One time my return got lost and they hadn't received it in about 5 days. They took my word for it that I'd returned it and sent me my next movie anyway. The original movie finally showed up at their office about 10 days later. I haven't checked out Blockbuster's site, but Netflix is very user friendly. If you rate movies, they even have a list of recommendations for you based on your ratings. They've made some great recommendations that I wouldn't have ever considered. I always keep about 25 movies on my list and change the order around all the time. ------------------ ______________ Caroline IP: Logged |

We have Netflix and like it a lot, they have a distribution center near us, if we return a movie a Monday, they get it AND ship another on Tuesday and we get another on Wednesday. Try the two week free trial, when you cancel it they will offer you 3 movies at a time for $15.99 instead of $17.99, or at least they did for me. We are going to let our subscription run out because we are too busy in the summer but will resubscribe in the fall.Gayle IP: Logged |

I've had Netflix for a couple of years. The service now takes a day or two longer than it did a year ago. I used to have 24 hour turnaround and now it will tell me my next movie will ship the next day. The entire next day it will tell me the name of the disk and say "shipping today." It seems they now ship late in the day.Having said that, I still get my new movies upon release. In fact, they have sometimes fronted me a sixth (I have a five disk account) to ensure I get the new release. I've looked into Blockbuster and Walmart by searching their movies online and I find they do not have the variety that Netflix provides. They are probably fine if one only wants to rent well known titles, but both are lacking in obscure titles and television series sets. The best thing about the competition is that it drove the Netflix price down, though the slowdown I've noticed started about the same time. All things considered, I will stay with Netflix until something better comes along. IP: Logged |

I started with Netflix and used their service for about two years. About 8 months ago I switched to Blockbuster. As far as I'm concerned they are essentially the same. Here are the differences(according to my experiences)for the 3 rentals/month service BB $14.95/month 2 in store free rentals/month
NF $17.99/month The turn around time on mail is roughly the same (in the Mpls/St. Paul area). The library is roughtly the same--last I looked one had 20,000 titles and the other had 25,000. The one thing I noticed is that the order priority in your cue had more significance as to what title is shipped next in NF as opposed to BB. If cost is your main concern BB has a small edge plus it offers the 2 in-store monthly rentals.

One of the main differences is that Blockbuster does not carry NC-17 rated movies. If you prefer foreign films which may show full frontal nudity as a matter of course, then Netflix is the way to go.IP: Logged |

Blockbuster ran a Ad in USA Today for a free month Trial of the 3 out at a time plan for New members. Enter offer code: usatoday15 when you sign-upWal-Mart also offers a free 30 day trial of there 2 out at a time plan. Wal-mart however had the worst turn around time in my Area. I rent foreign films from Blockbuster and have never noticed a problem. They are normally listed as unrated by blockbuster. IP: Logged |

I would definitely recommend Netflix. The turnaround time is quick (I return movie on Monday, they mail new movie to me on Tuesday and I receive it on Wednesday). I don't mind the cost difference, I feel Netflix has a better selection and their customer service is the best!IP: Logged |

I have used both Netflix and Blockbuster. I do like to 2 free in store coupons, it provides that instant fix you may need to see a particular movie or movie type.Blockbuster is planning to start fulfilling online requests from Physical store locations, this should improve turn around in many places that have issues now. Don't know when this will be completely rolled out, but it is about to be piloted soon. [This message has been edited by Sandy Lovell (edited 05-18-2005).] IP: Logged |

I'd like to second the suggestion that you take the free trial offers from any service you are considering before deciding. We did that with WalMart and Netflix (don't think Blockbuster was offering mail service at the time) and there was an enormous difference in shipping time with Netflix shipping to Albuquerque from Denver and WalMart from some little town in Arkansas and taking almost triple the transit time. We have been happy with Netflix.Diane IP: Logged |

If a film hasn't been rated by the "powers that be", it's OK (and is an "Unrated" film). However, if it has been through the rating process, and deemed unfit to be rated R, then either Blockbuster won't carry it, or they will carry the 'edited' R version if there is one. I first noticed problems when I watched "Y tu mama tambien" and couldn't understand the plot or characters. Found out I was watching the R version which had a vital element deleted. It all made sense when I saw the NC-17 version. It's probably not a problem to most people but it's annoying for some of the more offbeat, independent movies. IP: Logged |

I currently have Netflix (wilmington, Del.) and am concidering blockbuster. Two years ago I would have about 3 day turnaround time. My mailbox to back in my mailbox. The last few months it has moved to 7 or 8 days. I still get the movie the day after it is shipped however now it takes up to 6 days for my movie to get logged back in. GRRRRRR.Wayne IP: Logged |

Walmart has just given their entire customer list to NETFLIX in Exchange for Netflix prOmoting Walmart DVD sales. Stock up quite a bit today. We have used both and seeing we never go to a rental store we base our decision on which company has the most movies we like and it is definitely NETFLIX. Costs a tiny bit more but is worth it.[This message has been edited by cgeidl (edited 05-19-2005).] IP: Logged |

Net Flix!!!1. It took 1-2 days (depending if I took them back to the post office in time for an early pick-up) to return and RECEIVE BACK a video. Blockbuster was a bit cheaper at the time...and gave me 2 free in-store monthly coupons...but wasn't worth it because it would take 5-6 days to return & get a new video and the store never had what I wanted to see in stock. No wonder their not doing well. ------------------ Helen IP: Logged |

They announced today that wal mart is getting out of the mail order dvd rental business and is referring all to a competitor in a 'business arrangement' quote: Originally posted by michelle: Not to make matters more complicated, but just to let you know there is another option: Walmart.
