I've learned to first go to my research star resource:Google. I now use GOOGLE to search for anything and everything. Even long sentences I've keyed into Google and it's come up with some selections. The other day I was encountiner a weird obscure error with Windows 2000. It failed to load but it had an error message. On the other pc that was running I searched Google for that EXACT phrase and got back about three pages of informational websites. Amazing what Googling will do.

I agree. It's my only search engine. Google has become a leader in various specialized areas, too. For example, I believe www.Google.com/maps beats Mapquest for speed, accuracy, graphics and (for directions) logical routings. I now use the term "Google" as a verb in the same manner that we used words such as Xerox (regardless of the copier brand) years ago. IP: Logged |

My kids learned in school to go to google to search for anything. Guess you/I should have asked a preteen I too use it as a verb -- as in "I googled myself and look what i found ..." IP: Logged |

Actually that's a "good" thing. Are you sure you didn't opt out of having your address provided? ------------------ Luanne IP: Logged |

I LOVE Google maps. You can click on the map and drag it to move the map. Much better than the others I used to use. ------------------ Caroline IP: Logged |

I used this technique to catch one of my students plagiarizing. What was really sad was that this was one of my GRADUATE students. IP: Logged |

That and their satellite photos are top-notch too, for the locations I've tried anyway. Blows the competition away... Pat [This message has been edited by camachinist (edited 05-29-2005).] IP: Logged |

I now find I'm using www.answers.com more than Google. From their website: 5 Great Reasons to Use Answers.com 1. The right tool for the right query. Search engines are terrific when you’ve got a complex request; if you are trying to recall, say, the name of a Victorian Scottish woolen bonnet*, there’s probably a page out there that you can dig up. But if you need to know what pie in the sky means, when Benjamin Franklin was born, or whether Aeschylating is a cromulent word, a search engine isn't your best bet. You need a FREE one stop reference tool. 2. Nothing beats the speed of 1-Click AnswersTM. We're more than just a website. Once you download 1-Click AnswersTM, you'll have Answers at your fingertips from whatever program you're using: The Old Way 1. Open Your Browser 2. Go to a search engine 3. Type in search terms 4. Hit 'Go' 5. Read the list 6. Choose a link, click on it 7. Were you lucky? You're done! 8. Otherwise, click Back and repeat from step 5 The 1-Click AnswersTM Way 1. Alt-Click on word(s) 2. Read your answer 3. Who needs overload? links Even a simple question can get you complex answers from a search engine. Nobody – but nobody – needs 8,630,400 pages that mention DNA. We save you time by providing a topic-based snapshot answer rather than thousands of pages that contain your word in some context. 4. You can count on us Reliability, not popularity, is the criterion for our answers. Answers.com contains only up-to-date, accurate definitions and explanations from authoritative sources like Houghton-Mifflin, Columbia University Press, Merriam Webster, MarketWatch, Investopedia and Who2. In addition, you can trust your children with Answers.com content, eliminating the need to do research in potentially out-of-date or unsafe sites on the Web. 5. Bigger, broader, more dynamic than any encyclopedia Our topics range from law to poetry, from finance to nutrition, from culinary terms to mythology. No need to bookmark separate sites for cross-discipline reference. ----------------------- * it’s a Glengarry I've downloaded their free software & I like the dictionary capability of the site - one click and I have the definition, without opening a browser. Ease of use and I like the answers I get. If you're not familiar with this site - definitely recommend checking it out. Richard IP: Logged |
