Las Vegas? East LA? Palermo? Barcelona? Issy les Moulineaux? Depends what your description of "Exotic" is. All were wonderful in their own way.Fern ------------------ Fern Modena ©My words are my own, please don't use them without my permission. IP: Logged |

For me, it was Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, on safari. Also stayed at Victoria Falls and visited Livingstone, Zambia. In total, I spent 3 weeks in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Saw many elephants Held barf bag for friend who got malaria Watched scorpions crawl underfoot as we ate dinner. Then there was the trip to Ukraine and Russia.... talk about learning to trust one's friends Probably pretty pedestrian, by TUG standards, but were adventures for me... The Gambia in west Africa. 6 hours due south of the UK and a world away in culture. Most of the people speak English as it was a British colony, but that is the only common link. ------------------ Regards Keith IP: Logged |

A town in Chiapas where no photos were allowed. The Indians have a "Catholic" church which spooked me. Indian women were near the altar on their knees chanting in their native language. No pews, saints' statures were lined up on the floor against the wall, and an eery smell of pine boughs and candles. IP: Logged |

For myself, in Africa - Botswana, Swaziland, and Morrocco - and in Europe - Moldova, Bosnia, and Albania. If I had stopped rather than just passing through on the train, it would have been the internationally unrecognized statelet of Trans-Dinistria, which is in rebellion against Moldova. I was able to see parts of it from the train and I did get a fistfull of souvenir Trans-Dinistrian roubles from someone in my train compartment for a few dollars. I am told that the train I took is now discontinued because in the latest round of their spat with Moldova, the Trans-Dinistrians have blocked the tracks with big chunks of concrete. IP: Logged |

Anna Ruby Falls - Unicoi State Park - Helen, GeorgiaI honestly believe it's one of God's most beautiful creations in the world. It's absolutely magical in it's beauty, not only the two falls coming together themselves, but also the magical walk to the falls along the running creek. I look for the magic in my travels and Anna Ruby is one of the reasons we bought a timeshare in Helen (plus tubing on and the beauty of the Chattahoochie River). ------------------ www.picturetrail.com password:gingin (see 15 timeshares we've visited, please lighten screen before viewing) IP: Logged |

I've been to a lot of off the beaten path places, but in my mind the most exotic place I have ever been to is Zanzibar. They do have a good number of tourists there, but not many Americans and the people are a mixture of African, Arab, and Indian (a very unique and facinating combination of cultures and people). Nepal also has a good number of tourists, and also has what I would consider to be a very exotic feeling to it (expecially in Kathmandu). Both of these places were so different from anything I had ever seen or experienced before. To me an exotic destination is a place that is very foreign or unfamilar from what we are used to seing, and also a place that is captivating, exiciting, enticing and possibly even somewhat strange and something very beautiful at the same time.Someone earlier in this post suggested "I would define exotic as being somewhere off the beaten path of tourism." The two places I have been to off the beaten path that had the least number of tourists were Albania, and Moldova followed by Antarctica in 1997 (before the big influx of recent tourism hit). Although all of these places were very interesting and Antarctica certaintly was one of the most beautiful and serene places I have ever seen, none of these places seem to fit the image of what I think of as exotic.
The continents of Asia, and most of Africa; and the Mid-Eastern parts of the world are more exotic in my mind then Western cultures. I don't think being exotic has anything to do with the number of tourists, or it has to be a place off the beaten path it's just any place that is very very different. That's my opinion, and I'm sure that everyplace in the world can be considered exotic to someone. Isn't is great that most parts of the world are so different. Jerry IP: Logged |

Bhutan was probably the most exotic place I ever visited. Most of the places I’ve traveled to leave me wishing I had been there 40 years ago. Bhutan was a bit like the way things were 40 years ago. The schools are taught in English, so it’s possible to talk to a lot of the locals, especially the younger ones. Children are unafraid to approach you, but rather than ask for money or trinkets they enthusiastically ask you to take their pictures. I remember one family asking me to have lunch with them. And traveling there is expensive enough to keep the place from being over run by the $5 a night backpacking crowd.
