Just returned from a trip to the Canadian Rockies through Calgary and had a number of items stolen out of luggage. It was taken on the return trip in either Calgary or Dallas/Fort Worth airport. Do I have any recourse? Have called the airline and got very little hope for any help from them. Seems you are at the mercy of the Screeners since they want let you lock your baggage.IP: Logged |

I always use tie wraps to seal my luggage. Sometimes TSA cuts them and places a note that the luggage was inspected. But the tie wrap seems to stop the casual removal of items.------------------ Support our service men and women: Link IP: Logged |

Sorry to hear about your luggage. I've never had that happen to me but will be going to Calgary / Banff in 6 weeks. Would you please post a trip report or at least the highlights of your trip? Places you liked/ or waste of time? Food? etc. I'd appreciate it, or you can just drop me an email. Hugs and thanks Shaggy------------------ Leslie Michael IP: Logged |

We call them wire ties. They are the little self locking straps that you would use to tie up cables and wires. Home Depot, Target, almost anybody carries them. They come in different sizes and colors. Once they go on, they have to be cut off. We use bright colored ones to mark our instrument cases. When you are in a room with 50 black guitar cases, it can be tough to find the one that belongs to you. One of these on the handle helps a lot. Sheila IP: Logged |

Airport security here and in foreign countries don't have a problem with these? My daughter is going to Italy for 10 days as a graduation present, would she have a problem getting these off at her hotel? Sounds like a great idea.IP: Logged |

Since they won't allow me to lock my luggage anymore, I don't pack anything in the suitcase other than clothes, toiletries and a travel hair dryer. Everything else gets carried on the plane. Now that they've been out for sometime and TSA agents are actually recognizing them, I'm going to buy some TSA travel locks. The TSA supervisors have a special key that will unlock them if they feel they need to inspect the bag by hand, the lock then goes back on the bag. Some locks even have a little dot that goes from green to red if it's been opened. At the moment, no one is being held accountable for lost items. The TSA blames the airlines, the airlines blame everyone but their own workers. One problem seems to be the unions that won't allow their members to be watched on camera in the work zones. They claim it's a violation of their privacy. I guess if you're a thief, you need your privacy. Some airports have camera's in the TSA areas, others don't. I believe Jet Blue has camera's in their luggage handling areas. As far as the airlines go, most won't do anything unless your luggage comes up missing. If items are stolen out of your case, they just don't care. It's going to take some MAJOR public outcry before anything gets done about it. The thing I find odd is, the airlines are wondering why they're losing money and having to file bankruptcy. Could it be a lack of customer service? Nothing like feeling you have to lock your luggage to protect your stuff from their employee's. It's gotten to the point that I know of people who FedEx their valuable stuff to their destination rather than let the airline or TSA employee's have at it. IP: Logged |

About the tie wraps/cable ties, how to you get them off once you get to your destination? In my purse I used to carry a tiny pocket knife with scissors that did the trick but now that's a no-no. I would use the cable ties again if I had a sure way to get them off.Andi, I'm so sorry about your losses. ------------------ MAW - Hawaii/Kauai Photos [This message has been edited by 2hokies (edited 05-29-2005).] IP: Logged |

I have used a good pair of toenail clippers and a strong hand.

We had stuff stolen from the outside part of our luggage (zippered compartment) which we could not lock - it was my son's brand new bathing suit + other small items (probably around $100 value)and was on a flight from LA to Ottawa via Detroit. We also had our whole suitcase disappear (never to get it back) on a flight from Maui to Ottawa (well over $1000 value). For the suitcase, because it was international travel, we took a big hit dollarwise as NWA only compensates by the 'rules' which are very bad re lost luggage.IP: Logged |

Once I get to my TS, I go to the kitchen and take a knife out of the drawer and cut the ties off. Just another reason I always stay in a TS rather than a hotel.Patty ------------------ It’s these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes Nothing remains quite the same With all of our running and all of our cunning If we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane - Buffett IP: Logged |

We've been using these TSA-authorized locks for quite a while without any problem. Many of these locks were cut before they became "standard" for TSA agents. To be on the safe side.... you could attach a tag to these locks saying something like: "TSA Authorized Locks !!!" IMHO, most of the thefts are by baggag-handling staff, instead of TSA agents. Last April (2005), DW was on a flight from SFO to Geneva. Items were stolen. Fortunately, she reported it in Geneva Airport. Reporting with items lost is essential. We learnt: 1. The Airline that does the last leg is held responsible. 2. There were 3 bottles of good wine in a special case. No -- edible items are not reimbursed! 3. For the remaining items, Airline wanted receipts . (Ever imagined keeping receipts for the items one puts in a luggage). 4. For the ski goggles for which we had receipt ($200 +), they paid 70%. For the small backpack and a few other items taken -- no receipts no reimbursement! /Sultan[This message has been edited by sultan_sfo (edited 05-29-2005).] IP: Logged |

Just curious as to whether those who have had this problem have really nice luggage. Mine is so ratty, the theives might GIVE me something out of sympathy. I keep using my terrible looking bags because then I don't worry so much about the treatment they get by baggage handlers. Sheila IP: Logged |

Are TSA (or another countries equivalent) able to unlock our TSA locks? I ask because on our Chile/Argentina trip I came up missing one TSA lock (and I know I had it on and locked properly). Nothing was inside to indicate someone had looked/checked my luggage either. And we were told to definitely lock our luggage on our Argentina flights. While at the Buenos Aires airport I looked for TSA locks and they had none and the ladies had no idea what I was talking about. ------------------ JoAnn IP: Logged |

Don't believe other countries are familar with our TSA-Approved locks. According to my European contacts.... ALWAYS, ALWAYS, lock your checked baggage !!! IP: Logged |

Thanks to all members for your reply. We lost a camera, cosmetic bag with a carat diamond necklace and some souvenirs that had been bougth for family and friends. Seems to me if the unions want their privacy they should have to reimburse passengers for items missings. Guess I will have to invest in some TSA locks.IP: Logged |

A couple of comments...Zip-ties are a great idea. Toenail clippers (larger than typical nail clippers) can easily remove them. We've had no trouble with our TSA locks and have been using them since first introduced. Hint: I carry an extra one in my carry-on. Most credit cards (AMEX and some airline cards, as examples) have provisions for reimbursing luggage damage/loss. Go through the motions with the airline and submit a claim to the CC company. Travel insurers also are a source of insurance against this risk. Travel light... many business travelers only travel with what they can easily control and can roll-aboard. I generally do, when travelling alone. In any event, I suggest developing a travel wardrobe, which is inexpensive, and not checking any items of substantial economic value. At most, I put a travel alarm clock and some batteries/chargers in our checked bags. I don't pack anything I'm not willing to lose. Yes, I have had substantial items stolen in the past. I learn from my mistakes, as I can't control the actions of others. Good luck! Pat [This message has been edited by camachinist (edited 05-29-2005).] IP: Logged |

We never pack valuables in our check-in luggage (even before 9/11) - it's just common sense. But we have had little, silly stuff stolen - my then 12 year old daughter's diary (gimme a break), a new basball cap from the Hard Rock Cafe, and a bell in the shape of the Statue of Liberty (my mom collects bells.) I thought the type of items stolen indicated that it was probably done by young baggage handlers.------------------ Denise IP: Logged |

About a year ago the luggage handlers on Louis Armstrong Airport in New Orleans had a neat deal going. They would go through luggage and pull out the valuable stuff and then later auction it off to the highest bidder. Auctions were held in the airport parking ramp. They finally got caught. One time in Tampa airport I had to chase a woman down who just started walking out of the baggage area with my wife's luggage. After I challenged her, she dropped the luggage and just kept walking out the terminal. It was brand new luggage. Sterling

One last note on this trip, our flight on American Airlines was supposed to leave at 8:30 and we called before going to the airport was told flight was on shedule. When we arrived at the airport and started to check in was told the flight had been canceled. We were rescheduled at 1:04 to leave which got us into the Calgary airport at 9:30 and had a 3 hours drive after that. We were supposed to get in at 2:30. Really ruined our first day.IP: Logged |

Ok, I'm getting a little worried for the first time about my luggage. I am traveling to Cancun in less than two weeks.First, I'd like to know where I can purchase these TSA locks. Also, I made a list of what I am taking in my carry on and my luggage and there isn't anything in my main luggage aside from clothes and shoes.Everything else is in my carry on. Laptop, all cameras, bathings suit, change of clothes, towel, toilitries etc. Nothing aside from clothing and shoes needs to be in my main luggage.
I bought trip insurance and have losst baggage and items covered on my visa card. I would use the ties for my shoes and my put my clothing in plastics and tie them and number each one. Chelle ------------------ [This message has been edited by mischelle (edited 05-30-2005).] IP: Logged |

I bought our TSA locks at our local WalMart. They had two brands, both about the same price and both clearly marked TSA approved. I would think any luggage store would have them..or anywhere else that sells locks. ------------------ JoAnn IP: Logged |
