My first SW flight coming up and at 6'5" I would like some extra leg room for both my comfort and the comfort of those around me. I know I can get in the first call up by getting boarding passes at 12:01 am but is there any way to improve my odds beyond that? Thanks in advance, JimIP: Logged |

Dont count on getting it. I have flown SW many times and being 6'6" 245 lbs I try to get the exit row every time. Have always been in group A and have never gotten the exit row. There are many families and seniors who pre-board all of whom choose the exit rows and bulkhead seats first. It bothers me that seniors sit in the exit rows because in the event of an emergency they are unlikely to be able to remove the exit doors and help anyone else. Good luck.

They also let people who get on with a handicap sit in the exit row. When we questioned the flight attendant they said they couldn't do anything about it as long as they said they were able to help open the door. No assigned seating is what I dont like about SWAIP: Logged |

Your best chance of getting those seats, in addition to making sure you get online boarding pass in A is parking yourself in line one and one-half hours before departure. As the other posters stated, you are still subject to having the seats taken by pre-boards (unless you have a doctor's note stating you must keep your football injury knee extended, in which case you can join the pre-board ranks, but I would think you need a reall injury for a legitimate note). The only way you could possibly increase your chances would be in the selection between multiple departure times. If you can figure out which flights are less likely to be populated by pre-boards, you up your chances. My guess would be the very early flights may not have as many families, just given the time it takes to get kids cleaned up and into clothes, but surely no guarantee.IP: Logged |

We always get to the airport early (per my spouse)and have flown SWA and had exit rows the last two times with no issues. We are not seniors,no handicap and don't have little ones.IP: Logged |

I flew South West one time and that was enough. It is like a cattle call to board. Preboard was four times longer line than all others combined. I took very early flight and still half the plane were children, although plane went to Orlando. I'll never fly South West again. Once the previous flight departs, everyone watches the gate entrance to see who will line up first, then it is a mad rush to get in line after that person. I stood in line for an hour waiting to board. Biggest problem with this airline is no assigned seating. Jack ------------------ Spam is a severe and chronic problem for me. Because their parents are taking them to see Mickey. There are several advantages to getting an early flight: the plane is less likely to be delayed, and you can get just about a full day in at the parks. ------------------ Luanne IP: Logged |

I also like to leave early with the kids because they get more ants in there pants later in the afternoon and harder to keep in the seats. ------------------ Theresa [This message has been edited by swift (edited 05-30-2005).] IP: Logged |

Personally I don't want tall FAT folks in exit rows. You will get stuck like a cork in the opening and all of us will DIE.Let a normal 5' 9" guy weighing 170 lbs open the emergency exit and live on the deserted island with all the thin babes who make it out. ................9 inches is not in addition to height.... :-) ------------------ One of My Web Sites. I dont think the OP was implying that he was fat, just tall. And for me my 6'6 245 frame has very little fat. I think 5'9 170 might have trouble lifting the emergency door clear of the exit. Being that size do you have to pay for a whole seat or do they let you sit on an adults lap for free? [This message has been edited by gmarine (edited 05-30-2005).] IP: Logged |

You're 100% right. Problem is the same no matter where SW flies. Maybe a few less children than the Orlando flights. Cattle call, excuse me I mean boarding lines, seems to be part of the lure-something to make it seem worthwhile in order to save a few bucks. I've used SW a couple of times and never, never again!! Southwest only makes sense to me for a family or person traveling on a tight budget. Otherwise, I would look for an alternative with price not being my first priority. Pushed, prodded, crowded, etc. not for me. Would advise the OP to take anything other than Southwest if at all possible. Good luck. ------------------ Jim IP: Logged |

I fly Southwest for one big reason. They are usually the only airline that has direct flights from the closest airport to me (Oakland) to many locations I fly to. Flying another airline would either mean having to stop someplace, or having to drive to San Francisco and leave from there. The "cattle call" may be a pain, but overall I've been satisfied with Southwest.------------------ Luanne [This message has been edited by Luanne (edited 06-03-2005).] IP: Logged |

Boy, this has been a discouraging thread for me. I tried frequent flyer miles on both USAirways and Continental but no go. I already have my non-stop ticket from Norfolk to LV and don't see backing out and trying to locate tickets for four days away. The attraction was the N/S trip and the price but maybe I should have looked harder. I'll let you know how it turns out. Yours JimIP: Logged |

If you do a search, there was a thread about Southwest not long ago where the majority of posters were very satisfied. Vicki.

I fly Southwest quite frequently. Cost is not that important to me. Schedule is more important to me. Also Southwest has many policies that I like such as no penalty for changing your flights. The cattle car thing is greatly exaggerated if one doesn't arrive at the last moment. You can get your boarding passes on-line now after 12:00 am on the day of your departure. You will get all of your passes if there are multi flights. This eliminates having to wait in line for a boarding pass. I have always received a group A pass which guarantees me a good seat as long as I am ready to board 20 minutes ahead of departure.------------------ John IP: Logged |
