I have noticed that there is availability at the Marriott's in Palm Springs in late July / early August and I am wondering....will the temperature there be so unbearable that we will confine ourselves to the air con all day, or is it a dry heat that can be borne quite happily? Looking to make a decision which won't end in a divorce...

Palm Springs is one of our favorite places. My husband loves to go in the summer because the golf is so cheap. It can really be hot, though. It is a dry heat, so that does help. We live in Texas, so it isn't much different for us. I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but if it cool, you might have a hard time adjusting. There are places close by you can drive and get away from the heat. You can drive up the mountain and go to Idyllwild, and it will be 20 to 30 degrees cooler. I think it is only about a 45 minute drive. It is a great deal to go in the summer. If you can handle the heat, it is worth going.

For the last few years DH, kids and I go to Palm Desert for a week on vacation. We don't mind the heat. The kids go swimming, we find stuff indoors to do during the afternoon, and the evenings are glorious.

They have a great children's museum, the IMAX theatre shows regular movies, there are plenty of indoor malls/shopping areas, etc. DH gets up really early for golf and he's done before it's really hot.

Last year we went in August and had the fabulous luck to have perfect weather. There was a "cool spell" and the highest temp. we had for the week was 100 degrees.

I live just an hour away from Palm Springs and we visit there frequently. In fact we just got back from Palm Springs yesterday afternoon.

I definitely do NOT recommend visiting Palm Springs in July or August unless you want to stay indoors all the time. The temperatures can easily exceed 115 and still be hot at night. The old dry heat argument doesn't work when the temperature exceeds 105. Then it becomes brutal. I lived in Phoenix and love warm weather but Palm Springs would not be my choice for the summer unless I stayed inside the casino all the time.

Thanks to all of you for the input...think I'll steer clear of July and August then. It might be the safer option....

We were there last August. The temp got as high as 109 during the day. We played golf everyday and still just barely broke a sweat. Had to remember to stay hydrated though. Living in NC like we do now, the 109 with dry heat was a piece of cake compared to our normal 90 degree days with 90% humidity. Golf was dirt cheap. I'll probably go back again during the same time period in a couple of years. It had been 15 years since we were last in Southern California and I'm in no hurry to go back after having lived in Orange County for 10 years.
