I purchased ticket via United for flight on USAir for daughter in law and 2 year old grandchild. They could not use the tickets as daughter in law developed medical problems after I made reservations. United issued new "ticket" for each of them which have to be used within 12 months. I wanted the new tickets to be issued to me as I paid for it. The original ticket did state no transfers. I seriously doubt that they ever use these tickets. Basically, I am out $600.00.

Should I try to fight this?

You're out of luck. None of the U.S. scheduled airlines (versus those that operate as "charters") allow changes in names on tickets.

See this thread for more info.

They won't change the name however there are some ways to get the ticket value for your use if you plead your case to the right customer service Rep. Try calling and asking for a customer service supervisor or write a letter to customer service.

I was able to call a customer service supervisor and get a cash refund once on USAir minus change fee on a non-refundable ticke when My mother could not travel do to medical reasons.
A letter from the Doctor was required.
This was 2 years ago however and they may not be as flexible now.

A written letter to customer service did the trick with America West Airlines and they issued travel vouchers for the value of the ticket minus change fee for my Aunt when she couldn't travel for medical reasons. These vouchers were in the original ticketed passengers name but could be signed over for use by others.
