Quilter do not worry about other people on the course you can just say that you are getting your monies worth. Good luck with your clubs, it is such a tough decision to make. I just finished swinging my clubs, unseasonably warm in Michigan today. The one thing that I hate is men thinking that they are gods on the course and who hate to play with women. I may not be a real big long ball hitter, but all of my balls stay right in the middle of the fairway! Do not get to cheap with the type of club that you choose as their are some clubs with inferior shafts that will cause your ball to slice .... voice of experience.

Hi Quilter,My best advice is to go to a shop where they fit you. Its often a service they include where they measure your swing speed, your height, and your grip preference. It seems goofy but why have very stiff club shafts if you have a very slow, accurate and methodical swing. Or conversely you rip the ball and are using non-stiff shafts, you lose distance. Another big thing is to choose the grip that you like best. There are some that are more leather like but slip if you sweat a little bit, or ones that absorb sweat but have other limitations. They can add a little more tape inside if you prefer a little larger grip. These things seem insignificant but they just make you have the right equipment for your style. And we may own the exact same Wilson Clubs, but the set up may be vastly different, different grips, shaft stiffness, cut a little shorter and gripped a little thicker. And we would absolutely think the other persons clubs were the worst golf club made, but they are both originally the exact same club, different set up! It may not help your game but it won't hinder your game with the wrong set up for your height, mechanics, grip preference.

Quilter,WOW!!! What a thread; I came back to help you, but everybody else already has!!! I consider myself an avid golfer---I play 75-100 times each year. That may not sound like alot (esp. from a person from Florida, or Calif., Ariz., etc.) but I live in Maine; where our golf season is quite short. Here's suggestions I have, many of which have already been mentioned. 1) Determine how serious you are about the game. If you do NOT strive to be competetive/good (break 100, then 90, then 80, etc.), then do not be concerned with spending alot of money on equipment now OR later. Just have fun. (I do suspect that within a year or two, you will become MORE competetive; at which time you can decide to employ some of the advice given here.) 2) If you do strive to have significant improvement; take lessons EARLY in your golf career. You know the old expression, "..you can't teach an OLD dog NEW tricks"? Well the longer you wait, the more bad habits you develop. So, if you think you might EVER want to take lessons; do so SOON!!! 3) Golf is so much an individual sport that there are not many generalities; so do things in golf that YOU like (again---this is if you do NOT choose route #2!) Often, beginners like Woods better than Irons, a "lighter" putter, and develop a 'favorite' club after hitting it GOOD twice in a row!!! So, if you aren't too serious, and you happen to strike your 7-iron down the fairway pretty solid---use it whenever you deem necessary!!!!! As one who picks the "appropriate yardage club", I can tell you that I TOO would probably be better off in the long run going with this piece of advice. I have not seen mentioned Edwin Watts, they are a pretty good store for golf equipment---is ther one in your area?? I have SOOOO many ideas that I think it best to have you read these; and I can respond later to future issues. Keep yelling 'FORE', Pat

I can't help with selecting clubs, since I am not a golfer. However, in light of the gender discussions, I thought I would add the following little item:It was a sunny Saturday morning, and Joe was beginning his pre-shot routine, adressing the golf ball, visualizing his shot, when a voice came over the clubhouse loudspeaker: "Would the gentleman on the lady's tee please back up to the men's tee?" Joe was still deep in his routine, seemingly impervious to the interruption. Again the announcement: "Would the man on the women's tee kindly back up to the men's tee!" Finally Joe had had enough. He shouted, "WOULD THE STARTER IN THE CLUBHOUSE KINDLY SHUT UP AND LET ME PLAY MY SECOND SHOT!!!"

Favorite golf joke:A guy is standing in the rough on the 18th hole, just beside a rode. A funeral possession passes by and the man suddenly stops in his backswing, takes off his cap and holds it over his chest while all 22 cars in the procession pass by. His partner says to him "that was the most touching thing I have ever seen". The guy says, "oh really, it was nothing. It was the least I could do, I was married to her for 16 years".

I noticed our Costco has the Orlimar's, too. But they come with a plastic bubble package around the club head (containing the head cover), so you can't even get the "feel" of the clubs in the stores. And they ain't cheap!!! ------------------ JMHO, As Always JLB

I started playing 8 years ago. I went to a golf shop and they watched me swing (funny probably). They recommended a very inexpensive set of women's clubs. The man said that he could see I would eventually want men's clubs (how I don't know) but for now I should not spend the money. One year later I went to men's senior clubs (the inexpensive set was given away) that I really liked. I won't tell you how many sets I've had since then but I just got a new Hawkeye VFT Driver (Callaway) that I love. I don't really think height is the reason for the men's/women's club choice but it is your swing. I'm 5'5" and use the long seniors and have a friend who is 5' and uses the same length (the clubs are almost as big as she is but they work). For now get the least expensive clubs and see if it becomes and obsession (it has for me). Gotta go, golf game this p.m. Linda s
