I just read a December posting on the message boards of tst about VOG being bad a Kona Coast. We still haven't gotten our trade for June and Kona was one of our requests. What do you know about this? Thanks for any help.

Under the right (i.e. wrong) conditions, it is possible to have VOG (volcanic smog) at Kona. It is not prevalent, but it's not unheard of, either. There are a number of places you can go on the web to learn more.

One of them is http://www.konaweb.com/vog/ . One quote that might be of interest: "VOG is monitored by the health department, and a RELATIVE VOG INDEX can be reached by dialing (808) 885-7143."

I haven't been to the BI since the eruptions resumed years ago, but a friend was just over there and the first couple of days she coughed a lot because of the vog. It comes and goes.

If you have impaired health, think twice before going. Otherwise, just expect it to bother you a little, but maybe it won't at all.

We were there with my In-Laws this past October. The VOG irratated my wifes' Athsama as well as bothering my Father-in-law so bad he was bed-ridden 3 days. We were in Waikoloa @ the Bay Club, so we weren't that terribly close to the vent. My Mother-in-law & I weren't bothered at all so, unless you are normally bothered by smog or other airborne irratants I wouldn't worry too much unless you are staying very close to the vent.
