We'll be in Kauai in about two weeks and would like input on your 5 favorite "unique" things to do on Kauai. Please make them unique/unusual. We all know that lounging on the beach is fun but we are looking for unusual activities/restaurants/sights etc.

If you can't think of five please list as many as you want.

Thanks,
Phil

Eat lilicoi pie at Green Garden restaurant and eat sitting at ther counter at Mixed Plate in Hanalei. Views of mountains and waterfalls are great. Helicopter ride was also great.

I know that you want "unusual" things--, but if this is your first trip to Kauai'i, many things for you would be "unusual". I suggest that you log onto -- www.101things.com --- "sorry, I don't know how to highlite it". You will get much good information at that website. One of the standbys, is the drive up the Waimea Canyon. Stop at the lodge and museum, but then continue up the mountain, to some of the lookouts. You will be looking out the north-northwest side of the island, from the Na Pali coast. You also might want to try your hand at "ATVing". they have two different tours--the longer one is up to some waterfalls--a bit rougher ride than the shorter tour. (My wife and I took the shorter one, going through a tunnel; into cane fields, etc. Another thing would be a short (or long) hike from Ke'e beach (northside of the island).

I hope you enjou Kaui'i as much as we do--we will be there the first week in Feb.

Have you looked through the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook (by Wizard Publications)? If you haven't, then that is where you should go to find out exactly the information you are looking for.

If you are looking for more than what is in that guide, then you really are looking for the obscure.

Don't miss Queen's Bath in Princeville. Take a picnic (but nothing heavy, since the climb down can be slippery and you might need to use your hands to steady yourself on the rocks) in a backpack and enjoy!

It's a big "bowl" carved out of the lava rock shelf, overlooking the ocean. The waves sometimes crash pu and over the sides, and when you're in the water in the bath, it literally "blows" you from one end to the other in swirling eddies and currents! You can even bring your snorkel and mask - somehow, there are fish in there (I assume they come up on the swells that blow over the sides of the bath.) Very unique. Not all that many people know about it and you might well have it all to yourself for awhile.

If you still have your 1999-2000 RCI directory, the picture they show on the main Hawaii page (page 330) is of Queen's Bath.

Yeah, another thumbs up for Green Garden restaurant! I love the funkiness. I really enjoyed eating lunch and dinners there because it was more the type of food that the locals enjoy. We had a great times there partly because my daughter and I look like we belong there and my wife has a much paler complexion than either of us. In fact the first time we were there, we were greeted by host and owner with the following phrase - "Look at Brudda and Sista and Sister in law, welcome."

There is nothing fancy about the meals here except for the best pie and the best local home cooked meals.

Continue down the road for the best Shaved Ice anywhere.

Another thanks for the 101 site!

I found another which I think is informative http://www.trykauai.com/

Our we have only been there once and will go again on January 19th.

5 tings we will repeat are:

1. Breakfast at the Bali Hai restaurant in Princeville. Have not had dinner there yet.

2. Relax with snorkeling and reading on one of the "hidden" beaches in princeville. This time we will try out Queens Bath.

3. Visit various farmer's markets. The website I listed gives times for some of these markets.

4. Hike some of the wonderful trails.

5. Whaletrip

I loved hiking on the Kalaulau Trail near Hanalei. We only went the first 2 miles but it is one mile up then one mile down to a beautiful beach. The views are awesome!!! At one point we were looking DOWN on the helicopters flying below. The trail is well marked but if you do this make sure and take plenty of water!
There is no place to get any once you start. The trail is pretty rocky in places and goes through a couple of waterfalls cascading down the mountain but this is a chance to view the Napali Coast on foot.
We also went kayaking down one of the rivers with an outfitter and hiked back to a waterfall which you could swim under. This was a great trip but you could do it on your own by renting a kayak which they put in for you and if you go in the afternoon there wont be as many people at the waterfall. It was quite a high waterfall with a large pool of water in which to swim and I actually got to cross off one of the things on my lifes wish list to swim in a waterfall.
Have a great time!

1. Lunch at the Bali Hai Restaurant on a clear sparkling day.

2. Looking for rainbows on rainy days, and the waterfalls down the face of the mountains opposite Hanalei town.

3. Lumahai Beach- swim in the icy cold river there to the other side where you can jump off the rocks back into the river. The beach there was covered in green sand (peridots) in Jan. 2001.

4. Snorkling at Lawai Beach and going to the blowhole Spouting Horn about a mile further. And take money to buy jewelry or carvings from the artists there.

5. Go to a farmer's market, especially the one on Mondays at noon in Koloa town. Buy fresh fish, cut flowers including proteas, fresh produce. And a coconut lopped apart by a guy on the back of a truck.

(6. Kilauea Lighthouse early in the morning when all the birds are circling. Hopefully the family of NENE geese will be toddling along the footpath from the parking lot.)

Plus the other things in the 101 book!

Try going to the Hawaii archives, accessible from the Hop To pulldown at the bottom of the page (only works when reading a thread -- for whatever reason archives aren't listed when viewing the conference topic list). There are several topics there that will be of interest.

Our favorite activity at Kauai: Hiking down into Waimea Canyon. Most people just stay at the rim parking lots. Just remember to wear hiking shoes, realize that you may get a lot of red dust on them, and and bring plenty of water.

I second Queen's Bath but be very careful if you do this. In the wintertime you most likely won't be able to actually swim in the bath. Wear shoes you don't mind getting mucked up.

Take an open-doored helicopter tour.

Dinner at Bali Hai sitting on the balcony.

Lay in a hammock at the Princeville Hotel on the shore.

Visit the Guava Plantation and eat fresh Guava.

Buy your souvenirs at WalMart. They have just about everything, even the same brands as tourist shops on candy and coffee. I had decided prior to going that I was going to treat myself to a big 14k gold pineapple charm. I began the search from jewelry store to open markets. After four days I bought one for $218.00. The next day I was in Walmart and there it was, exactly the same one, same weight and everything for $136.00!

For unique my wife and I loved the ATV tour by Kipu Ranch Adventures. Last year we also did the wagon ride (not the carriage ride) at Kilohana Plantation. It was a nice relaxing tour with lots of historical information. Grab the passion fruit from the vines and eat them along the way. I had my fill. Then save room for lunch at Gaylord's restaurant at Kilohana. Not unique, but still great meals at Lihue Barbecue Inn. Do at least one dinner there. I'll pass on WalMart, though. I can't see doing something so "mainland" when I'm on Kaua'i. (Besides which, I hate "Wally World.") Geez, I love talking about Kaua'i. Now how do I wait patiently for August to roll around?

All the above suggestions are great. A few more:

*Breakfast at the DaLi Deli in Koloa
*Smoothies at Banana Joe's near Kilauea
*The Kiluaea lighthouse
*Drinks at sunset at the Princeville Hotel
*Buying silk-screened t-shirts from the Nite Owl outlet in Port Allen
*The National Tropical Botanical Gardens Tour in Lawai
*Attending a performance of a local hula halau (hula school)
*Seeing how many free shell leis you can collect from Hilo Hattie's to take back for your daughter's friends.

I could go on and on. Have a great time!

The thing about buying souvenirs at Wal Mart is that even though they have a souvenir department, there are Hawaiian things throughout the store. The merchandise is sure not like in the states.

I had been looking at Macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, Guava jelly, and chocolate Macadamia nut candy to take back to friends in the grocery stores and at Hilo Hatties. Same brand, same everything at Wal Mart for a good bit less. I wanted a children's book for my graddaughter with a Hawaiian theme. In the toy department at Wal Mart on the children's book shelves there were numerous ones and no where near as expensive. The pineapple charm was in the jewelry dept along with lots of Hawaiian themed charms. Hawaiian t-shirts, clothing, all the key chains, calendars...it's all there. Why pay more? Take your film in to their one hour photo processing dept. and while you wait, buy your souvenirs at the same time. Oh and at KMart we bought an awesome desktop computer CD of Kauai photos!

Glynda,

That is a good idea to visit some of the Mass Merchants.

We do not shop at Wal-Mart as they have destroyed too many small towns, so I will see if K-mart offer some of the same merchandise.

Rent a red Mustang convertable and drive down to Waimea for an awesome shave ice + ice cream concoction at JoJo's Shave Ice. Waimea is a nice little town and out of the tourist loop, unless you are going to Waimea Canyon (and don't miss that!).In that area the Na Pali Kai Catamaran cruise around the Na Pali coast leaves from a nearby marina and is really wonderful.
