Without revealing my purchase (because it hasn't passed ROFR, but I trust my broker that it will), I should soon have a lock-off that will allow me to get 2 weeks per year.

We travel twice in the summer (usually need 2 bedrooms, but could make due with one).

I'm considering buying a second, much less expensive timeshare, that would allow me to trade (I wouldn't go there).

But I don't need a third week in the summer. Unless I go to this timeshare I'm buying (which I will maybe every 4 years), I'll always lock it off.

So the other 3 years - I'll have 2 weeks. NOW - We LOVE to go away for 5 days around presidents' week (we have air from Feb 15 -20, but it doesn't work well with timeshares as that's WEd -Mon). It was suggested the Hilton Vacation Club is nice because you can get any days - but I'm getting low on funds.

We also love short getaways like 2 night escapes.

Any advice??? Should I get a second, inexpensive timeshare (I have my eye on one that's under 2000 - Sand Pebbles) as a trader. Or should we stick to hotels for our shorter jaunts?

Thanks for your ideas.

Ellen

I would never stand between a timeshare junkie and a fix, but if you are in RCI the availability of Last Call and Extra Vacations at low prices for getaways - if you are flexible on locations - makes another timeshare unnecessary in your case. With II, it might be a toss-up. Unless you get an accomodation certificate, the getaways can be a little pricey and hotels or a really low maintenance trader (under $400) might be a better alternative.

I would agree that Worldmark would offer you the flexibility you need---but no Worldmark resorts where you live. Maybe Fairfield?

This timeshare will be II. I know - the getaways aren't that great. I've tried (I used to own Hyatt).

If Hyatt weren't so expensive, I'd get a cheaper one because you can Colorado for so few points.

Though we sold it, we are going to CA in 2 weeks for just 3 nights on Hyatt.

I like Bluegreen so I'm biased, but it might fit what you want and generally hit the right area for you. If you look on eBay you can find our favorite reseller (it'll say something about .45 per point) and if you check bluegreenonline.com you can see the resorts and points values.

they also have bonus nights for most of their resorts and I believe it starts at $39/night. With bonus nights and the regular points, it's a 2 night minimum, except holidays, when it's 3 nights min.

Keep in mind if one of the timesjares is 5* and the other isn't you could lower your trade power.

Does Bluegreen points allow you to book a few nights here or there? I went to their site, but it wasn't very informative. Thanks.

Ellen,
You may not need to buy another timeshare to get your third vacation per year. If your timeshare is a good one, II will give it an accommodation certificate when you deposit it. That's like another free week. I used my accommodation certificate to reserve a week in the Poconos during President's Week next year. It only cost me $249, so even if you don't stay the whole week, it is affordable. There are several nice resorts in the Poconos: Westwood at Split Rock, Shawnee Summit, and Villas at Fairway. Call II and tell them what you are buying and they can tell you if it qualifies for an accommodation certificate.

I would not buy another one in your position right now b/c:

1. I think you could easily "rent" points from someone for a 3-5 day trip over pres. day for the same $ as maint. fee on 3rd TS.
2. you can do the last minute things from II or RCI b/c you are going to join to trade your LO anyway.
I would try the above techniques for a year or two and see how they are working out---if you still think you need to buy one (b/c pres. day is too $ to rent, etc., then I assure you that there will still be plenty of deals to be had).

Great advice! I did look for a place to rent, but since I got air for a Wed - Mon, it will be difficult. That was an error, I guess. Oh well! THANKS everyone.

you can rent a place from someone who has points---you tell them your dates and they tell you what they have and how much for it, then they make the reservation for you. There are several tuggers who do this as a sideline. Many points systems allow for dates other than 7 days.

post an ad under wanted to rent classifieds on tug--you might specify BOTH your location (ex. Orlando) that you are looking to rent and also possible POINTS System (ex. FF, Disney, etc.) Some points have more avail. in diff. parts of county (ex. FF has decent East Coast and ORlando spots, WorldMark is better for WEst Coast) and put in your email address---they will find you. If you have no luck in a week or two, post here again and some of us can refer you to some.

There web site does kinda stink, but they are supposed to be releasing a completely new one (timeline unknown...). Bluegreen Rentals (accessible from the current main site) will give you an idea of how much you'd pay retail to rent.

To rent directly with a bg member is far cheaper.

Less than 7 nights: YES, depending on the property (some aren't managed by Bluegreen). There is a 2 night minimum, except for holidays, when there is a 3 night minimum. I think, tho, during Red time, you have to wait until 5 months out to book a partial week.

Bonus nights are same minimums, start at $39 (I believe), and have to be 45 days out. There's also some differences among BG-managed and not BG managed (cost and availability)

There's a Bluegreen Yahoo Group if you want to ask questions. Many people have been in it longer than I have and there might be a few with extra points to rent out.
