Hi there,My favorite hotel in Cancun is closed for renovation, so I have to choose a new place to stay this season and am considering renting a timeshare unit. I have never rented a timeshare before, and I'm nervous for several reasons, but I also see that it can be a bit cheaper. I was hoping that some of you could advise me on a few issues: 1) If I rent a timeshare, will I be constantly harrassed during my vacation by the hotel/resort where I am staying (as in, will they be trying to sell me my own timeshare)? This is my greatest fear. 2) Are there any hidden fees that I will have to pay when I arrive at the place (above the amount I pay the owner beforehand)? 3) In renting a timeshare unit, am I basically just renting a spot to sleep, or do they come with other typical hotelroom amenities, such as daily maid service? Or the ability to charge meals/drinks/etc. to the room? 4) If everyone has to check in and out on a Saturday at a timeshare resort, does it become a crazy free-for-all in the lobby on that day? Should I count on standing in a line there for hours? (I've already experienced immigration/customs lines in Cancun on a Saturday...bleh.) 5) Is it possible to rent a timeshare unit for two consecutive weeks? (Perhaps this depends on who owns what units/weeks.) 6) Finally, does anyone have any specific advice, warnings, or recommendations on particular timeshare resorts in Cancun? I really appreciate your help here. I always look forward to my yearly Cancun vacation, and I'm apprehensive about ruining it somehow if I decide to go with the timeshare option. But I'm also curious. ---Barbara

I would recommend the Royal Resorts in Cancun. Four of the Royal Resorts are rated in the TUG Top Ten timeshare resorts. The names are The Royal Mayan, The Royal Caribbean, The Royal Islander and The Royal Sands. Another resort, the VCI, is also a member of the Royal Resorts. They are all top quality resorts with wonderful employees. If you are a member of TUG you can read the resort reviews; you can also read reviews at www.tripadvisor.com You can visit their website at www.royalresorts.com to see photos, video, and more information. The answers will of course depend on the resort you end up staying at. I'll answer based on my experience at the Royal Resorts which you will find many people will recommend here. quote: Originally posted by Astraeya: Hi there, 1) If I rent a timeshare, will I be constantly harrassed during my vacation by the hotel/resort where I am staying (as in, will they be trying to sell me my own timeshare)? In a word - NO. Tell them you're not interested and they will leave you alone. (this is not true of other resorts in Cancun) quote:
2) Are there any hidden fees that I will have to pay when I arrive at the place (above the amount I pay the owner beforehand)?
This should be detailed in any rental contract you sign but in general there are not additional fees (ie. no utility or taxes added on). Of course if you charge things to the room you'll have to pay. quote:
3) In renting a timeshare unit, am I basically just renting a spot to sleep, or do they come with other typical hotelroom amenities, such as daily maid service? Or the ability to charge meals/drinks/etc. to the room?
At the Royals you can charge anything you like to the room at any of the resorts including meals, drinks, spa treatments, grocery items, tours, etc. The 1 and 2 BR units have a full kitchen and dining room plus a living room and bedroom so much more than a hotel room! The lock-offs or studios as they are occassionally called will be like a hotel room without any additional seating area or kitchen facilities. quote:
4) If everyone has to check in and out on a Saturday at a timeshare resort, does it become a crazy free-for-all in the lobby on that day? Should I count on standing in a line there for hours? (I've already experienced immigration/customs lines in Cancun on a Saturday...bleh.)
Heck no. The day we arrived and the day we left there was no more than 3-4 people in the lobby. They allow you to settle up your bill any time on the Friday or Saturday so line ups are avoided. quote:
5) Is it possible to rent a timeshare unit for two consecutive weeks? (Perhaps this depends on who owns what units/weeks.)
Can happen but it's entirely dependant on finding someone that wants to rent for 2 consecutive weeks. quote:
6) Finally, does anyone have any specific advice, warnings, or recommendations on particular timeshare resorts in Cancun?
Pick any one of the Royal resorts and you'll be happy.

I will just second Heron's comments. We have rented from TUG owners for stays at the Royal Caribbean. No problems with any of your concerns. The only 'hawks' to watch out for selling timeshares were at the airport.------------------ Steve H. Barr Raleigh, NC Assorted summer Daytona and North Carolina beach weeks. A great place to rent a Royal from owners and get more info and pictures about the resorts is: www.mexicondo.com For more detailed information about what to expect at the Royals, I have a web page link here: http://www.geocities.com/tonygraz/triptips.html ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness." *** http://tonygraz0.tripod.com/ IP: Logged |

Tonyg, thanks for the great links and pictures. Your restaurant guide will be a big help for our trip to RC this summer. I also printed "tips to the Royals". Thanks again.------------------ anne IP: Logged | |
