I have been looking at the rentals listed in TUG. How do I know when it is safe to rent a unit. Arenn't there rules about reserving a timeshare and then renting it to someone else? Can I end up going on vacation thinking I have a rental and then not be allowed to use a rental if it has been illegitemately rented.Patricia

There is a certain amount of trust involved. However, you can do a number of things to at least partially protect against getting scammed, including- Use a rental agreement such as one of those in the TUG Advice section (link at the top of this page) under "Renting". Or for about $8.00, you can download an excellent agreement with instructions at Timesharing Today.
- Before making payment, ask the owner of the week for some evidence of ownership, such as a copy of a recent maintenance fees billing or other correspondence with the resort. (You don't want to rent an exchanged, accommodation, bonus or getaway week, which is not permitted under RCI or II rules, and could lead to a cancellation of the reservation.)
- Ask the owner to provide, after you have paid the rent, evidence that your name is on the reservation. If the owner doesn't have that evidence, ask how you can contact the resort to confirm that you are on the reservation.

This is only if the exchange comes from either II or RCI, as many of the independant companies have no such restrictions. I would if you were concerned ask for a copy of the confirmation to be sent to you so you could verify if the seller did have this unit available. fwiw, Greg Ask the owner to provide, after you have paid the rent, evidence that your name is on the reservation. If the owner doesn't have that evidence, ask how you can contact the resort to confirm that you are on the reservation.

I have rented from a nice guy in LV, and have rented out my Timeshare, in both cases being able to "prove" to the renter, a reservation was in the renter's name seemed to be important. However, trust is the basis of our lives, everyone reading this probably "trusts" the bank, stock broker they have won't disappear tommorrow with the money. So do the prudent stuff, and then relax. ..............Peter ------------------ One of My Web Sites. For myself whenever I've rented, I've used www.escrow.com to hold the rental money until I independently confirmed for myself that the reservation was in my name. After I confirm it myself, I then release the money to the person renting the unit. I pay for the escrow fee, but it gives me peace of mind that I'm not throwing away my money. It's always worked well for me and I've rented many timeshares with no problems.IP: Logged |

The fee varies, based on how much $$$ is involved. Go to the link and click on "How Much Does It Cost?" in the lower left section of the page. IP: Logged |

In the last couple of years, our family have rented units from TUG and Redweek.comm without any problem. We prefer to talk with the renter before sending the money (50% of rental payment); most of them are very helpful and provide us add'l information about the area. IP: Logged |
