We have just confirmed The Manhattan Club for 2/28/06. We will be coming from CA and have never been in NYC in the winter. What can we expect and how can we best prepare ouselves? Any suggestions on NYC (other than bring money) would also be appreciated. Did We do the right thing? Thanks in advance. JohnIP: Logged |

I've been at the MC in the middle of winter (cold, windy and snowstorm), wet, rainy April; and the heat of July. I actually prefer the cold of winter (tho w/o the snow). Less crowds, huge discounts on show tickets, etc. You will need heavy coats, mitten/gloves, hats, scarfs and boots (just in case of snow)...and if there is a wind, it can be a very "biting, cold" wind. However, if you are lucky enough to enjoy cold, yet sunny weather....you are in for a treat. The MC is within easy walking distance of many popular sites/attractions; plus, very convenient to the subway. I was at the MC for a long weekend this past February...and two of the days were just gorgeous (cold, but sunny). While the Central Park area was jam packed (due to the "Gates" exhibit); most of the other areas were not too bad. We used the subway to get around the city most of the time; and found it inexpensive and convenient. Our last day, there was a bit of a snow....quite messy (with the melting snow puddles); but much preferred over the windy, rainy weekend I experienced earlier in April. DEB IP: Logged |

I completely agree with the last post. We go to the city every year between Christmas and New Years. We've been burned by the weather only once and still had a great time. Before you leave home, you'll have a pretty good idea of what weather to expect and can plan accordingly. Remember - millions of people live and work here. You CAN do this! IP: Logged |

My wife and I went to the Manhattan Club in late January. We went BECAUSE of the cold and snow. It was a great change of pace for us from our L.A. life. We were there during the Blizzard of 2005. Had something like 12 inches of snow in a day or so. Had a ball! One piece of advice: don't rent a car. We just took taxis and the subway. Really easy and fun, especially with all the snow. Also, the Manhattan Club is obviously located in a great area. We walked everywhere just to experience the briskness of winter. Broadway plays, great diners and delis, good restaurants. I originally booked the week so I could see some hockey games but the NHL was on strike. Ah, life. At least, the New York Knicks were still playing basketball -- if you call that basketball. Definately go. You'll love it. IP: Logged |

I was at the MC this January. Also from California. It was cold and miserable. I could barely handle the freezing weather. I will never, ever, ever go back to NYC in January or February.------------------ Those are my principles. And if you don't like them, well, I have others. IP: Logged |

I lived in NJ and worked in midtown Manhattan for 5 years. I loved the winters, it was a special time, the tourists were gone. IP: Logged |

We live in Chicago so we're use to the cold during wintertime. We went to the MC at the end of January 2005. New York gets cold in the winter, but never as bad as Chicago. It's prob due to the fact that there are so many people there. The snow in an average winter doesn't stay on the ground too long and melts quickly. Activities in New York decreases during the wintertime I noticed: fewer Broadway shows, sales, etc. We also took the subway and public transportation wherever we went. Native New Yorkes take the subway whenever they go anywhere. They only rent cars to leave Manhattan on weekends. ------------------ "Stop me before I buy again!" IP: Logged |

Someone who skis for fun should have no trouble with a little outside cold unless it's water skiing that you like!Just bring your ski jacket, gloves and hat and enjoy! I would suggest boots but my 14 year old daughter and many of her friends went without boots all winter long here in cold Ontario and they didn't seem to suffer. You could always bring them at the last minute if you get cold feet. Cindy

We were there in January this year too! It was *COLD* but we were still outside, walking with everyone else. One real nice advantage was the TKTS line did not exist. Just walk right to the window, get the seats you want, and be on your way. Summertime the TKTS line alone may take hours. The only clothing change I'd make is to bring some light wool pants.I did meet a black guy in the Manhattan Club elevator. He was coming in from outside same as me. I was wearing everything I brought including my down jacket and down hood. He was wearing a short sleeved t-shirt and jeans. I asked him if he was just arriving since he had no coat and no gloves with him. He said no, that he'd been out walking for several hours enjoying the city. After I got over my shock and unbundled myself further I asked where he was from. Norway. I told him he didn't fit my Norwegian profile of blond and blue-eyed but he must certainly be from there since I could not be in the MC lobby in just a t-shirt, let alone outside. He said he was in NYC for the heat!! All 14 degrees!! Good laughs on the rest of the ride up over perceptions of what is cold or hot and that the only way to know where someone is from is to talk and learn. Hey, that's why we travel. (We will pass on Norway in the winter for now.) ------------------ Rick Owner: Sudwala, SA and Lake Tahoe, CA IP: Logged |

We were able to enjoy a week at the MC the first week of March this year. The weather was all over the board - on Monday we were waiting in line for the Statue of Liberty ferry and wishing we hadn't brought jackets because it was so warm. On Wednesday, it was snowing and bitterly cold with a strong wind. On Thursday, it was perfectly comfortable again. Now, as for perception, I did grow up in northern Wisconsin!I personally wouldn't shy away from this week. Just keep tabs on the weather forecast and plan accordingly. And if it is cold, there's plenty of buildings you can escape in to! IP: Logged |

Yes! QUOTE]Originally posted by Hoc: I was at the MC this January. Also from California. It was cold and miserable. I could barely handle the freezing weather. I will never, ever, ever go back to NYC in January or February.[/QUOTE] Even if we say pretty please! I was there the same week as Hoc and Jackie - and it was COLD! Even though I live in the area, I am used to a very "car" driving life....I have many friends who live in NYC and they dress VERY differently then me who runs from the house to the car, the car to the store, the car into work... As long as you come prepared with layers of clothes and good shoes/boots, you will be fine. I am hoping to go back again MLK,Jr week. Now I definitely would go in May but that's when things get started in the Hamptons...can't have everything! ....signing off from Four Seasons Aviara,,,someones got to do it . ------------------ Pat My Trips and Travel Website - Pictures and More... OK, you've convinced me. I'm coming next week. Actually, I was coming back next week, anyway. But I plan on avoiding winter in NYC from now on. I might be willing to go in December, when it's cold, but at least there are Christmas lights and Macy's shopping. ------------------ Those are my principles. We were there this year the same time you will be next. My only additional idea is to bring a scarf. If you don't have one, you can buy one there from a street vendor for only $10 or less. When it's really cold it's nice to cover your neck and mouth, it kept me extra warm. Personally I thought the snow was magical falling in the big city. We've visited in all seasons and winter is very special, I hope you love it.IP: Logged |

Living in the NJ area, I frequently visit NY. I won't be going back in the winter unless it's Thanksgiving or Christmas time. It is SO much nicer in the warmer weather. When it's cold, I find myself rushing to get to somewhere warm. I really don't get to enjoy the pleasure of being in New York and watching all there is to see. Bundling up and then peeling off layers when inside is also a burden. Winters lack the street fairs and parades that are so abundant in the summer and spring. If you can't come any other time, then winter will have to do but the warmer weather is better.------------------ --Laura IP: Logged |

Thank you everybody for all your comments & suggestions. We look forward to the challenge of NYC in the winter. Maybe we should schedule Hawaii or Mexico right after, to "thaw" out?IP: Logged |

It was 5, not figuring in wind chill. That's cold enough for me! ------------------ Those are my principles. And if you don't like them, well, I have others. IP: Logged |
