My family of 4 is going to spend Memorial Day week at the Custom House in Boston. We have to fly into either Manchester or Providence airport.

1) How do we get to the marriott? Is there a mass transit? If so, how much does it cost, and what are the steps we take to get there?

2) Any suggestions on things to do? We've been before, but I'm sure some of you are more up to speed than we are. We want to eat 1 meal at Legal Seafood, don't they have a downtown location near the Marriott (I know they have more than 1 location)? Freedom walk is on our itenerary as well. Other than that?

If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to drop by Mike's Pastries. It's an easy walk, but someone less geographically challenged will have to point you toward the north side.

I also enjoyed walking Harvard yard. There are some museums around and usually lots of listings for musical entertainment, some of it free.

We'll be there in June, so I hope you'll share the fun things you find to do. I've been there a few times on business, but never on vacation with the family.

I've found a couple of pass deals we might take advantage of. Do a google search for Boston Citypass and goboston and you'll find them easily.

Just out of curiosity, why not fly right into Logan? Providence is some distance (your best bet would be to rent a car I'd think) and which Manchester do you mean?

Any way, once you get there, the Custom House has a great location right near Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market. I don't know how old your kids are, but the Boston Children's Museum is fun for the younger set; the NE Aquarium is a must-see. There's also the Duck tour which takes you over land and out on Boston Harbor. There's a re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party where the kids get to throw "tea" overboard into the harbor.

There's a Legal Seafoods in Qunicy Market, I believe. Last time we were in town, we ate at the one in the Prudential Center and the waiter told us they were building a brand new bigger one right next door as the current location was going to become part of a new hotel.

The discount airlines only fly into Providence or Manchester, not into Logan. So, flying into Logan usually costs about $150 more per person than flying into either of the other two.

Independence Air had some very low fares into and out of Boston for June when I checked a couple of weeks ago.

Turns out we're going to use American miles, rather than Southwest, so we can fly directly into Logan. At this time, we're thinking of spending only 4 or 5 nights in Boston, then fly to DC and spend 3 or 4 nights. American's Freq. Flyer club allows one layover, so we can do the whole itenarary for only 25000 FF miles per ticket. And my wife can get a couple days work in Boston, which will more than pay for everything. Work she would have had to go do at some point anyway. And they'll pay all but $70 for her ticket (the difference for the Washington leg). Cool, huh?

Your travel plans sound great. The Custom House is just a block or so away from Quincy Market. Legal Seafoods isn't far from Quincy Market. It is on the waterfront by the Aquarium. You can also try the Swan Boats in the Public Gardens. We love the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum for nice artworks. There are lots of shopping districts, great restaurants in the North End. I think that is where Mike's Pastry is. You can have a nice meal in the North End as well as visit the Old North Church and Paul Revere's house. There are a couple of very old burial grounds in downtown Boston. We like to go to the Union Oyster House for a meal, too. That won't be too far from the Custom House. Boston also has lots of Irish type pubs with live music, etc if you enjoy that. (we do) Sometimes you can even arrange to join a tour of Fenway Park built in 1912, I think. There are also harbor cruises etc. Have fun.

Question for Bostonians - just came back from a week at the Custom House. Receptionist said she heard that the commuter lots will no longer accept long term parking. This was always a cost effective way to park for a week in Boston. Does anyone know if this is true ?

TIA

We spend the day in Boston several years ago and loved it. We did the Freedom Trail, had dinner at Hard Rock Cafe and spend the evening at Fenway Park watching the game.

By all means Fenway Park and watching the game was the highlight of the day. We have 3 boys, where 2 of them just love the game of baseball. While vacationing we try to attend a game if possible, last year we visited the Giants stadium in San Franciso, and hopefully the Yankees stadium this year in New York.

Whatever you decide you'll have a great time, there's lots to see and do in Boston.

If you fly into Logan you can take the water taxi across the harbor right to the Marriott Long Wharf hotel and then walk the block and a half to the Custom House. That is what we do each year when we go and it's the best way to get there from Logan Airport. If you want more specific info...email me privately and will provide. You are going to love your time in Boston and the Custom House.
Almost forgot...Legal Seafood is right down the street from Custom House on the Harbor...5 minute walk....good choice...great way to sample N.E. seafood...

I would recommend the Boston Duck Tour. The web site is: www.bostonducktours.com. It's alot of fun. Get there early, it fills up fast. Then walk back to Boston Common via Newbury Street on which there are nice shops and restaurants. Also the Museum of Science is great. Their web site is: www.MOS.org. I believe the Freedom Trail takes you through the North End. Again, there are some very good Italian restaurants there. Also, as you probably already know, don't drive in the city. It's a nightmare!
Have fun.

I second all the reccomendations listed.

Children's Museum is the best. It looks small but can easily take up 3/4 of the day.

Duck Tours is the most popular tourist attraction in Boston, and for good reason. Tickets go on sale, on-line 5 days before and they go fast. I have heard people go on at Midnight if they have their heart set on a certain date. Otherwise you can stand in line early in AM (they sell out quickly) the day of at the Prudential Center or Aquarium (very close to you).

If you go to the Isabella Gardner Museum, they have a bistro serving great food in the most beautiful garden setting that is considered a Boston "best kept secret". Not anymore, I guess.

Fenway Park is great but the ticket prices have gone crazy.

If you want to go to the North End for dinner, restaurant.com has certificates for several restaurants.

You are across the street from Fanuiel Hall. FOOD, FOOD and more FOOD. My favorite thing to do is eat from one end to the other. Being a holiday weekend the street performers will be out in full force. Very entertaining.

OMG, I think I want to go into Boston this weekend!!!

Thanks to MPizza, a fellow TUGger, I'll be staying at the Custom House from Monday, May 30 until Friday, June 3. It will be so nice to walk to work instead of commuting the 30 miles each way.

Maybe we can get a TUG dinner going during the week?

We got an email at home from Tim Jan and tried to reply but the email kept coming back to us as undeliverable. So I am posting our reply here, hoping Tim Jan will see it.
Hi Tim. We have used our Custom House timeshare for about 4 to 5 years, but have only been there in the summer months (June-August). During that time of the year the water taxi has been in operation (it doesn't run in the cold months, not sure of the start date). We traded our Custom House last year for the Von Trapp lodge in Vermont so the info I provide is almost two years old. At that time the water taxi cost $17 round trip (single way $10). To get the taxi, just go outside the airline terminal to any bus pickup area and get bus #66 which will take you to the taxi dock (bus is free and runs about every 15 minutes). The taxi holds about 12 people and runs about every
15 minutes and is never crowded. Just make sure you get on one that goes to the Marriott Long Wharf as they go to different areas. You pay on the boat so you need to decide if it's round trip at that point. They will get a ticket for the return trip, so hold on to it. It probably has gone up over the last two years, but it's no more than a regular taxi ride and a lot more
interesting. The taxi will let you off at the Marriott Long Wharf and you drag your bags about two blocks to the Custom House which is easy to see from the dock. When your ready for the ride back, just go back to the dock you were let off on and use the phone on the dock (clearly marked) to let them know you want to return to the airport dock. We have never waited more
than 10 minutes. When you get to the airport dock, you get the free bus back to the terminal We have found it a marvelous way to start and end our Boston vacation, BUT we have done it when it's 80 degrees and it might be a whole different experience at 50 or 60 degrees. If interested, check on the Boston Airport
web site to see if it's running yet. Bob

That would be $64 for a family of 4. How much is it for a Taxicab for the same trip?

Hi,

The taxi ride is less than 10 minutes and should cost less $20. If you don't think you can fit with the luggage there are van taxis there also.

Have fun,
John

Hi KC

Thank you very much for the information regarding the water taxis to the Custom House. I am not quite sure why your email bounced back as undeliverable. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks again.

Hey PA,

My family visited Boston Custom House 2 years ago on spring break (in fact a very generous TUGGER friend was instrumental in helping us land this II bonus week...boy were we grateful!).

The 1BR suite/sleeps 5 w/ rollaway...our frugal family didn't mind...we had a great trip. Great location. (it's just a kitchenette, I believe...no full kitchen).

The subway stop for Quincy Market is across the street. The couple nights parking that rental car were pretty pricey at the downtown locaiton, as I recall.

We went most everywhere by subway/walking. I rented a car 2 days for a trip to CapeCod (blue season in March was quite). We toured Harvard and MIT, BU campases (my kids were interested in dreaming of IvyLeague!)...walked freedom trail, etc. Seems like we did some muesems too. We did PaulRever's house/museaum. I think we went to a Shakespear play at MIT.

I'd truly second the motion for Mikes' Pastery canolies. We also enjoyed pizza at Regina??? something (supposed to be a local favorite) on that Northend....

Have fun!
