We'll be there for a weekend in June. Unless we get some wonderfully warm weather, I doubt we'll spend too much time on the beach. Any suggestions for things to do and places to eat (lobster!)?

If you are interested in shopping, you can drive south to the outlets in Kittery, Maine. You can drive north to Kennebunkport to drive the shore road and see the Bush estate. If they are in residence, you might not be able to stop on the road, though. There are restaurants along the roads in that part of Maine offering lobster dinners. (I've never had lobster, so I can't suggest any) I think that there is a good diner in Wells, though. There are some used book, antique book stores in Wells that we've been to. There is a cute gift shop in Kennebunkport that my family likes. It is called the Mole Hole. It was still there a couple of years ago when we were last up there. When we do go to that area, we spend a lot of time at the beach or swimming at the hotel pool. We love the beach even in winter. Not for swimming of course!

Go to Perkins Cove in Ogunquit or The Lobster Pound which is on route 1. You can ask for further directions once you are there. Do the Marginal Walk in Ogunquit, beautiful .... the beach is also nice. Wells is right there. Cape Neddick is a cute golf course too, nearby. If you like chocolate, go to the Harbor Candy on Main Street. YUM!!! Its a great area.

Route 1 will take you by lots of interesting places. I'm not sure how far it is to Acadia National park, but that might be an option. Freeport can't be too far if you want a shopping day- LL Bean has a nice store there. An interesting diner with international commentary is Moody's on route 1- have no idea what town, but somewhere between Rockport and Kennebunkport. You will find plenty to do.

We have been going to Ogunquit every July for about 14 years now. All the above recommendations are great, esp. walking the Marginal Way in Ogunquit and driving along Route 1. I especially love the stretch of Route 1 between York and Ogunquit. Other things to try are the Ogunquit Museum of Art, which is absolutely lovely, and the colonial museum in Old York. (They have an old jail (gaol!), as well as some colonial homes that have been completely restored that you can tour. Being from California, we particularly love the colonial history in the area. If you have kids, the Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport is fun, too. There's also the Strawberry Banke Museum in Portsmouth, NH, which has restored homes from colonial times up through the 1950's or 60's, I believe, showing how people lived in the Portsmouth area over the last few hundred years. It's very interesting, and there are a number of artisans on sight performing their crafts.
For lobster, I also recommend The Lobster Shack and the Blue Willow in Perkins Cove. Both are casual places, the Lobster Shack is our favorite and used to be frequented by George Bush Sr. The Blue Willow is a gift shop, with a small dining area in the rear, kind of hidden. But it's right on the ocean with a stunning view. I believe they serve only lunch.
That's all I can think of for now! Have a great time!
Diane
