Just found out over the weekend that one of my husband's cousins is getting married on Cape Cod, mid June. We already had the next week set for NYC and we would need to travel a couple days earlier to make the wedding and then go on to NY a day late. OK with me to extend the vacation But I have never been to Cape Cod and we will probably really only have one day free to check things out. David spent the summer up there working, 20+ years ago, doesn't remember much so he doesn't have a clue either. So what are the must dos. Figured I'd ask the experts here at Tug. - TIA !! Take the ferry or a short flight over to Nantucket. The island is wonderful! Much of the land is owned by a conservation group, so there are still wonderful places to get away. Mid-June will be before the tourist mob hits, but most things should be open. A trip out to Great Point Light is one of my favorite things to do there.Sheila IP: Logged |

Check out the little Brewster general store on rt 6A. ALso the town of Chatham is very nice to visit and poke around and get a sense of the cape villages.Rt6A is a nice road that has interesting stops and gives you an overview of the cape. Have some lobster at theLobster Pound or Lobster Claw ? in Orleans, rt 6A also. If you have time keep going east and see the dunes in Truro and Provincetown. Have fun. One day is not enough.IP: Logged |

Take the backroads by the water to Provincetown and start early you will enjoy your self there,Chatham is a nice town going towards PT. On the way back at night catch a drive in. I would use the speed ferry to do both Nantucket and Marthas vineyard.I found that I wanted to stay longer in MV, There is alot to see there. On the way to or from the Cape stop off in Newport RI. Only go if you can spend a full day there as there is to much to see. Go to the http://www.castlehillinn.com/ for lunch just be sure to make reservations. ------------------ Where to next ? Where on the Cape is the wedding? It takes about 2 hours to go from beginning to end (canal to P'town) on a non-summer weekday. SBtS

The wedding is in South Yarmouth, where we will be staying. We will have a little time Thursday evening when we arrive and all day Friday. The the wedding is Saturday and I imagine will be filled with family duties. Then leaving Sunday morning to head to NY, our original plans. Thanks to all for the ideas. Will do what we can with the allowed time. Probably drive around a lot and just sightsee. Wish we could have gone up earlier, but David has all of his vacation time allocated to the rest of our travel year. Coast Guard Beach was recently named one of the best beaches in the country. Race Point Beach is one of my favorites, which is nearby. If you have never been, you really have to visit one of these outer Cape beaches while you're on Cape Cod! They are absolutely beautiful...IP: Logged |

Do visit our famous Christmas Tree shops, they are all over the Cape but the one over the Sagamore Bridge that has a thatched roof and the one in Hyannis are the largest. Don't let the name fool you they have everything under the sun. Cape Cod National Seashore CC beaches are wonderful, water is chilly. Martha's Vineyard is a unique daytrip. Don't forget to eat our seafood especially the fried clams and clamcakes and lobster. In the town of Sandwich The Daniel Webster Inn has servers in period attire. Nice place to have breakfast. http://www.danlwebsterinn.com/index2.html http://www.christmastreeshops.com/ It sounds like you won't have the time for Newport but if you do The Breakers Mansion in Newport is the best if you only have time for one and a stop by Bowens Wharf shops is nice. The Black Pearl is a popular place to eat on the wharf. You must do the 12 mile drive by the ocean that is past the mansions and Cliff walk by the mansions.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I have been reading up on it a bit and have come to the conclusion we will need to go back sometime and spend a week. Add it to the TO DO LIST. As with all Tuggers, we plan way ahead and if we didn't already have all our vacation time for the year dedicated, would stay longer now. Sounds like it would make for a nice fall trip sometime. So will just use this as a springboard for future planning. David's family operates a motel there where he worked one summer during college, so I guess we have a good place to stay. I am sure I could spend a couple of days, just checking out Woods Hole. So much to do, so little time.
