We have a 2bdr/2ba unit on hold at Little Gull Cottages, Longboat Keys, for 8/6/06. We've never been to Florida. Is this too close to the Hurricaine season? Is it too hot/too rainy? Any advice would help us make our decision. Thanks alot!IP: Logged |

You would probably find it very hot and humid if you're not accustomed to that sort of weather. I wouldn't worry too much about hurricanes, though trip insurance might not be a bad idea just on the off-chance something came through. Chances are a pretty good a thunderstorm will come through every afternoon. I worked in the area several times and you could almost set your watch by a 4PM storm. Sometimes they were quite violent, usually fun to watch, typically not lasting too long but boy is it steamy afterwards. Sheila

Yes to all questions! It is very hot and humid in August here in our area of Florida. Last summer, Hurricane Charley hit just to the south of Longboat/Siesta Keys on Aug. 13. The weather was very nice up until the 13th, though. All barrier islands here were under mandatory evacuation beginning Aug 11 in the pm. Many people tell us that summer of 2004 was most unusual for hurricane activity, BUT 2004 is all I know from experience. IP: Logged |

Hot, humid, and afternoon thunderstorms. But on the other hand, Little Gull is one of the nicest quaint places you can get. Old style Florida Cottages. I wouldn't let the weather stop me from taking that trade. I'd go in a heartbeat. That's what they have AC for.Patty ------------------ It’s these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes Nothing remains quite the same With all of our running and all of our cunning If we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane - Buffett IP: Logged |

Thank you all for your responses! I went ahead & confirmed Little Gull Cottages. It's probably not any hotter or humid than Hawaii at that time of year. It looks like a great place that has all the amenities that we like......beach, fishing, beach, swimming, beach, relaxing, beach,......... I'm looking forward to this trip! IP: Logged |

Sorry, but FL in the summer is hotter and more HUMID than Hawaii ever is. Having said that, I still love it and plan on moving to the Sarasota area when we retire.Patty ------------------ It’s these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes Nothing remains quite the same With all of our running and all of our cunning If we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane - Buffett IP: Logged |

My uncle live in Bradenton, very near LBK and Sarasota. In the summer, his church's attendance is way down because locals and part-timers have gone north. Still, with AC in homes, cars and businesses, it's doable. Just know what to expect. Vacation rentals there have four seasons. When I told my friend on Maui who has a vac rental business, he said, "Yeah Miserable, Awful, Tolerable and High." He used to live in Michigan and vacation in FL and was exaggerating, of course. ------------------ Lee Boylan IP: Logged |

That's funny! Here in Sn Diego we only have 3 seasons! Summer, After-Summer, and Before-Summer! I think we'll be able to tolerate the hot/humid days....... Been to lots of hot/humid places & have made it through. Air-conditioning & the ocean work for me!IP: Logged |

YES! The confirmation said we have unit #9, which they say is across the street from the beach/"bayside". Is this ok? Do you know the layout of the resort? Where can we find a map of the resort? Is this a "good" unit? thank you![This message has been edited by ati2d (edited 02-17-2005).] IP: Logged |

http://www.vacationfla.com/littlegull.htm Unit #9 is the first one on the Bayside next to the road. It's one level. I thought #9 was a one bedroom? You have a short walk to the Gulf or pool. Our walk to the Gulf is farther but has never been an issue. We have # 15 down next to the office. I have never stayed in #9 but would just to be there. ------------------ Jim, (Former) Florida Beach Boy Little Gull @LBK Islander Beach Resort @ New Smyrna Beach [This message has been edited by silverback (edited 02-19-2005).] IP: Logged |

Jim, #15 is the unit we have for next Jan. We stopped by there last month to see the resort. We were impressed with it on the outside, didn't go inside. Are the units well furnished? Mainly the kitchen? Is there anything we should bring? ------------------ June IP: Logged |

This is the confirmation that we received:Resort ID: 0865 Resort Name: Little Gull Unit Type: 2 Bedrooms Max Occ/Privacy: 6/6 Kitchen: Full I can't get on to rci.com right now, but I'm sure they wrote unit #9. Maybe I'll write or call them just to confirm.. Rather not have any problems when we get there. Is next to the road noisy? It looks like the road ends right there anyway. I'd rather not be right by the pool either. (I know.......picky, picky, picky.......) I think I'll be happy just to be there!! Thanks, again! IP: Logged |

OK looking right at the layout map. #9 is a 2BR/2BA and is the first one next to the road. I don't think there is enough traffic to be a sound problem.Patty ------------------ It’s these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes Nothing remains quite the same With all of our running and all of our cunning If we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane - Buffett IP: Logged |

June we eat most of meals out but have never felt we didn't have what we needed in the kitchen. For breakfast we usually go up to Mama Lo's on Anna Maria or Peaches. For Lunch we stay in, and for supper we try to eat on the water somewhere: Pier on Bradenton Beach, Pier on Anna Maria, or Rod N' Reel Pier, Salty Dog, Mar Vista Somewhere we can relax and unwind.I've heard complaints on here about noise from road in unit #9 but I've been going to LBK for over 20 years and it's always pretty quiet, especially at Little Gull. ------------------ Jim, (Former) Florida Beach Boy Little Gull @LBK Islander Beach Resort @ New Smyrna Beach IP: Logged |

What does it take to get a trade to Little Gull on Longboat Key? I like the looks of the resort, and it would be a fun place to spend a week. How far in advance would a request have to be?IP: Logged |

I deposited the week of 12/24/05 at the Heidelberg Inn, June Lake, CA & started my search shortly thereafter. It looks like Little Gull will be a nice place to visit.

The resort has units on two sides of the road. Units 1-8 are on the beach side of the road with 1&2 being right on the beach and progressing upward in numbers as you go toward the road. Then #s 9-15 are across the road with 9 being closest to the road and progressing to # 15 which is at the end on the bay side near the office. The pool is on the bay side in the middle of the units.Patty ------------------ It’s these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes Nothing remains quite the same With all of our running and all of our cunning If we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane - Buffett IP: Logged |

I have stayed in unit #13. #12 & #13 Share stairs and #14 & 15 share stairs. Of units 12 & 13, 13 is a bit larger unit. Same as 14 & 15 with 15 being a bit larger. # 16 is the one right next to the bay and up over the Office. It is a very large unit. 12,13,14, and 15 have covered parking. 13 is close to the pool but opposite any noise that you might have. 13 and 15 are pretty much the same unit. Both have great porches.------------------ Jim, (Former) Florida Beach Boy Little Gull @LBK Islander Beach Resort @ New Smyrna Beach IP: Logged |

So, it appears that unit #9 is half-way between the gulf & the bay. Do we have ANY kind of view? Well, we're usually out & about most of the day anyway. Thanks for all the info!IP: Logged |
