We are off to Kauai on Jan 5 then two weeks in Maui. We usually go in July so our first chance to see whales there. 1. Have they been sighted on both islands yet this year? 2. Any recommended companies to go out and see them for both islands. Thanks in advance. IP: Logged |

Can't speak for Kauai, but yes we saw whales, dolphins and sea turtles last week on a whale watch cruise on the Alii Nui out of Maalea. Pretty impressive sight too.IP: Logged |

Hi Cathy, My own Cathy and I are off to Maui on Jan 2 and will be staying until the 19th. I see you're an owner there and I wondered if you'd mind recommending your favorite beach on Maui? (We'll be in Kahana the first week and Kihei the second week. Neither of the places we're staying has a beach that is recommended! LOL!) We've never been there before...we have booked the whale watch through "Pacific", we're scheduled for the Atlantis Sub, and we're seeing the Warren and Annabelle show, (although Warren has another guy filling in for him while he's on vacation), and we're doing the Old Lahaina luau. So...we have some activites lined up...(oh yea, the volcano too)....but I myself am looking forward to just laying on the beach and zoning out a little. Any suggestions? We bought Maui Revealed, and of course the author recommends many beaches as well as steers visitors away from others, but we'd appreciate a first hand Tugger's opinion! We'd also love to hear about anyone's absolute MUST DO restaurants as well as any we MUST avoid! (We also bought the Hawaii Entertainment book, so we have those 2 for 1 coupons and card at our disposal....and by the way......if anyone would like some of the coupons for the other Islands, let me know....I'd love to help out a few fellow tuggers! Cathy...would you like the coupons for Kauai?) Thanks for any input![This message has been edited for typos by RichardS (edited 12-23-2004).] [This message has been edited by RichardS (edited 12-23-2004).] IP: Logged |

Last week we saw some whales from the Spouting Horn on the south shore of Kaua'i. That should mean that they are around Maui too.Take binoculars to see them good from shore, and you may need them on a boat, too, depending on luck. Those small 8 x 21 roof prism ones are perfect for HI. ------------------ Lee Boylan IP: Logged |

We saw one whale off the coast of Kaui during the second week of December (we also saw 3 huge Manta Rays). Their numbers are sill scarce at this point.IP: Logged |

Kathyb: Check my post from a couple of weeks ago regarding Kauai Whales. Yes they were there a couple weeks ago. We saw them (six)on a Captain Andy's sunset dinner cruise out of Port Allen. One of the whales stood on his/her head and slapped the water at least 12 times. One swam under the boat. Meals on board were great and I got some awesome sunset pics (going to enlarge the best and hang them on the wall). I highly recommend Captain Andy's--crew was as excited as the passengers. We go back for two weeks to Embassy Poipu in Feb and plan to take Captain Andy's again. Mele Melika Maka,

Your choice in beaches depends a lot on what you want to do. On West Maui, the people watching is best at Kaanapali; there is good swimming at Napili; nice quiet waves for youngsters at Kapalua and good snorkeling up at Honolua Bay. On South Maui, hardly anyone will argue that Big Beach at Makena is an all-around good beach. But you can have lots of beach fun at all the Kamaole Beach parks too! And the people watching at the Wailea beaches is worth a visit if you like that.... IP: Logged |

Richard, If I were you I'd skip the Atlantis Sub. We went 2 yrs ago and it wasn't worth it. The water was a little cloudy (January seas can be a little rough) and there weren't that many fish. You'll see more fish by taking a snorkeling trip to Molokini & Turtle Town. JMHO. See www.barefoothawaii.com for decent discounts. We'll be there (Embassy) from 1/1 > 1/9. Hope to see you. Hi Phil, Well...the main reason I booked the Atlantis Sub is for the kids. The first week we're there I am taking as my guests my brother-in-law, his wife, and little girl, (about the same age as my son), and the kids when asked were thrilled with the idea of experiencing a real submarine ride. We're using the 25% off discount from the Entertainment book so I'm only paying about 3X what it's worth. LOL! The second week it's just my wife and son...hoping to have the activites out of our system by then so we can get some serious beach time in! Hope to see ya on the sand! Richard

RichardS -- Well, I am a little prejudiced but the Kaanapali Beach has a lot going for it. First of all it is real long -- maybe 2-3 miles. Secondly you have five hotels along the walk with their restaurants available and The Whaler Village to do a little shopping or grab an ice cream. Also at Black Rock is one of the best snorkeling places where you just walk in from the sand. It also will give you a look at 'the other side of Maui'. IMHO the two sides are very different. You have a great list of things to do. We love the magic show. Is the road to Hana on your list? It is really something not to miss. IP: Logged |

I have never been to Maui before....it's a shame that my chance to see the Warren and Annabelle show will have a substitute Warren! Oh well......... I'm not sure if we're doing the Road To Hana...I keep hearing conflicting opinions......its boring, its great, yada yada yada....lol...guess we'll play that one by ear since it doesn't have to be "scheduled". As for ME, I'd like to try it...the wife is not so sure.....we'll see. What I do know for sure is I am more excited about THIS vacation than any before! IP: Logged |

Cathy, you will be happy to hear that the whales have been spotted right from our lanai at the Pono Kai. We will be here in unit C-206 during your stay, so feel free to stop over for a visit. We would love to meet you. IP: Logged |

Kathy: Be sure and book some sort of whale watching cruise if at all possible. You just don't appreciate their size and grace from the shoreline like you do from the rail of a boat. They seem as interested in the tourists as the tourists are in them. Pectoral fins 14 ft long and they are about the size and weight of an 18 wheeler and can propel themselves clear out of the water--all of 80,000 # and 40 feet long.Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year), Sterling IP: Logged |

Quick question... Is the whale watching better on Oahu or Kauai or doesn't it matter? We're visiting both islands in a couple weeks and were wondering where to do the whale watching cruise.Joe IP: Logged |

We'll be on Maui in February. When we were there last time, we went on the Pacific Whale Foundation cruise out of Lahaina. We saw lots of whales, and they really know their business, so I intend to try and make reservations with them again. Actually, that trip we saw whales from all four islands, but Maui was the only island where we took the boat. IP: Logged |

Joe: Maui is supposed to have the best whale watching due to the relatively shallow water. However, we had great whale watching out of Port Allen on Kauai.Read something about a lawsuit on Oahu because a whale banged a boat and a child hit their head on a rail and got injured. Try to get one with hydrophones to listen to the whale sounds. Incredible.

We will be on Kauai the first part of March. Should we make our reservation with Captain Andy this far ahead of time? What do you think? Thanks for your help. It is our first time on Kauai and we are clueless. Maui is our home ground! ------------------ Barb IP: Logged |
