Hi, we're going to Kauai this summer and are currently (very excitedly) planning for the trip. we came across the Hawaii savers thread, followed it, and discovered the Tropical Biplanes website. Has anyone flown with them? Any feedback...in general? Worth it...not worth it? Safe? Regarding which tour package to choose? We'd welcome any information. I always love to read what Tuggers have to say. Thanks! IP: Logged |

We did the biplane thing on the BI several years back. Went over the vent, awsome!. Also did a small regular plane around the BI. In the biplane you get to smell the vulcano and get the mist in your face. I have vertigo but was OK in the biplane - you sit two to a seat and have 3 belts t keep you in. Pilot didn't do any fancy stuff either. We enjoyed it but not sure I would do it in Kauai. Helicopters are better there IMO.------------------ Elaine - Central Region Reviews IP: Logged |

We did a fixed wing flight around Kauai--everyone has a window seat--and a helicopter flight a year earlier. IMHO the fixed wing flight was far superior to the helicopter flight. Have no idea why you wouldn't consider a bi plane on Kauai and would do it on the Big Island. (My wife is handicapped and would not have been able to walk on the wing like you have to to get into the cockpit)Also, the week after we took the fixed wing flight on Kauai a helo crashed into the NaPali Mountains. Five people were killed and it took most of a week to get the bodies out and they had to call a heavy lift copter from one of the other islands to remove debris from the crash victims. Not my idea of a good vacation experience. Sterling

Great, thanks for the feedback from both of you. I think we were looking at biplane over the helicopters partly because the cost is less. But also because I've always wanted to try one. On a related yet somewhat diff. subj. does anyone have any experience with jeep rentals on kauai? Know where we can get a good deal? Thanks!IP: Logged |

On our last trip to Kauai we took the Bi-plane tour. The only problem is don't expect much in the way of pictures. The Waco has struts that pretty much block most of the camera angles. Our helicopter pictures were a lot better. I'm also a pilot and had never flown in a Bi-plane. That said, next trip will be in a helicopter. What ever you do, take some type of aerial tour, the money will be well spent.Aloha, ------------------ Gary Jones Work gives you the money to spend on vacations. We went to Kauai in December of 2003 and took a helicopter tour. It was my first helicopter ride and I have to say I was terrified...mostly because the helicopter had NO DOORS!! Once we crested over the Na Pali Cliffs and got to the blue coast, all my fears melted away. The beauty was like nothing I have ever seen. The photographs we got were absolutely amazing. My husband and I each had a digital camera (one borrowed from his office) so we got photos from each side of the helicopter. Here is a link to the company if you are feeling brave: http://www.interislandhelicopters.com/ Aloha!IP: Logged |

We Took the biplane tour last Aug. and my wife and I had a blast. The feeling of the open cockpit, the drops of moisture from a passing shower, the smooth felling of the ride was the best we had ever had. We took some good pictures and the inclusion of some part of the plane just seemed to enhance the photo. Just make sure you have the camera strap around your wrist as the slipstream outside the cockpit will take it away. Fabulous. ------------------ SXM Week 23 fixed Maui 2 weeks floating IP: Logged |

Wow, both the biplane and heli tours sound amazing. THanks for all of your responses. It really sounds like whatever we end up doing will be a memorable experience. IP: Logged |
