Can you suggest which area is best for natural beauty and, if possible, snorkeling? We'd prefer an area that's not too much like Disney or Jones Beach. Does that mean we should stay away from Kaanapali? Thanks IP: Logged |

Don't even think Disney and Hawaii at the same time. No similarity.------------------ The latest reviews can always be found at the Western U.S. Review Index Page. IP: Logged |

Ka'anapali - Lahaina or Wailea - Makena. Kihei is a reasonable option. But, wouldn't stay in Kahului.

Ka'anapali-Lahaina is, IMHO, the most touristy area. We've stayed above there in the Napili-Kahana (sp?) area and that seemed less touristy.Kahului is the airport area on the east side of the island. I'm not famaliar with that area other than to land and drive to the west side of the island. I would describe the Kihei area as more neighborhood like. It has several timeshares one of which we stayed and enjoyed, the Maui Hill. This area is getting busier by the year. The Wailea-Makena area is south of the Kihei area, a beautiful area with more upscale and VERY expensive hotels. You can find lovely beaches in all these areas. In the off-seasons, crowds are fewer. While Maui is a very beautiful island and is the favorite of many, we've heard it described by locals as Mauifornia. We spend our Hawaii time mostly on Kaua'i and the Big Island although tourism is up all over the islands. ------------------ Be slow to criticize, quick to compliment. IP: Logged |

Ka'anapali-Lahaina is the most convenient, because there is a row of resorts right along the beach, joined by a paved beach path with resorts, restaurants, and an upscale shopping center. Every water sport imaginable is offered right from the beach there. It is just a few minutes away from funky little Lahaina where most of the Maui nightlife is. In the summer it gets very crowded - but shouldn't be as bad when you are there. There is great snorkeling right there, around Black Rock, which is right in the middle of the beach (underneath the Sheraton). We also like to drive a few minutes up the coast and snorkel at Kapalua Bay - it is especially good for kids, because it is protected and has a nice beach. Wailea-Makena - well, my husband calls it the Beverly Hills of Hawaii. High end, gated resorts, and some lovely private home. We stayed there at the Maui Prince Hotel for $180 a night on Priceline.
Kahului - Don't stay there - this is by the airport and there is nothing approaching a resort here. Very basic motels. Kihei - More residential, condos, lower-priced hotels - it's OK, not very resorty.
If you go to www.biddingfortravel.com and click on Hawaii-Maui and then on the hotel list at the top of the board, you can see a list of exactly what hotels are in each area and links to their websites and reviews. You can also get info. on how to bid. Hawaii winning bids are much higher than a lot of other areas. To tell you the truth, if I wasn't doing a timeshare exchange, I don't think I would use Priceline for Maui. You can get a condo for about the same price per night and have a lot more room. This a good place to look - www.vrbo.com ------------------ Denise [This message has been edited by dbmMayer (edited 03-30-2005).] IP: Logged |

Brad,What are you looking for? The last few years we needed a few nights before our stay at our timeshare. Two years ago we stayed at Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei, bid through Priceline at $85 a night. We could not get anywhere near that rate last year . My kids really like to surf near the harbor in Lahina so we spend a few days at the Lahina Shores Hotel about $130 a night, I believe it is actually a condo that rents out the units as a full service hotel. Neither of these are luxery resorts but at either end of a timeshare stay, they were a reasonable alternative to spending $200-$400 per night. ------------------ Elyse IP: Logged |
