I will be using Budget on the Big Island and Kauai & I am a fastbreak member. When I arrive will I have to go to the car rental counter, get on a bus, etc. I am looking to cut down on the wait time as much as possible. Any recommendations. Thanks

On Kauai you will have to go get on the bus to the remote site a mile or two from Lihue airport.

Being a fastbreak member didn't help much with our rental earlier this month on the big island. You need to take a shuttle from the terminal but it only takes a couple of minutes. Once you get there, there's a separate line marked fastbreak which may not move any faster than the "normal" line.

Hopefully you'll have a better experience than we did.

The experience will be similar on Kauai, though I have never had to wait in line for more than two or three minutes. I have found Budget to be helpful and efficient, and they are my first choice when I visit Kauai. They are MUCH faster than my experiences with other rental car companies on Kauai.

If you are going to a Kaua'i Pahio resort, they will make a Budget reservation for you and will have the keys at the Pahio checkin at the airport. Nothing else to do, but drive away.

If you are going to a Pahio resort and make the reservation through Pahio AND tell them that you are a fastbreak customer. (I failed to do the latter and ended up with the shuttle bus and the normal wait in line. Lesson learned.)

Hi Bob, On both of those island, Budget had a shuttle to their cars. We got our paperwork ON the shuttle bus and spent only a couple of minutes at their counters. I waited for our luggage while hubby got cars and picked me up (with luggage--saved lots of time!)

W are going to Kauai in July and have made our car reservations thru Budget. Do you have to make your car reservation thru Pahio to get this service? We are staying at the Pahio kai'o kai with reservations made thru RCI.

On Kauai we always leave one person with the luggage at curbside, go get the car, and come back and load it up at curbside. Easier than draging it in and our of the shuttle bus and then to the car.

Thanks Sterling, good idea. The question I have is, When you get off the plane can you get directly on the shuttle to the cars without going to a desk? I assume all of the car rental shuttles runs continuously through the airport outside the baggage claims area or is there another area I should be aware of. Thanks

The shuttle to the Budget car rental is across the street from the luggage pick up area on the Big Island. You do not have to go to a desk in airport itself.

When we tried this we still had to go back to the facility so my DW could sign the paperwork & be an official 'driver'.

Thank you Sherry. It always helps to know which direction you are suppose to go especially after a long day on a plane. Our flight is from the east coast to hnl & then onto the BI so by then every little bit of saved time helps. I am not to worried about going from the BI to Kauai and waiting for the car because it will be during the day and a short time period for the flight.

Is the shuttle pickup on the BI right outside the luggage claim area. sounds like on the BI it may also be easier to leave someone with the luggage and then pick them up.

Budget is no longer directly accross the street on the BI. You catch a shuttle back to where most of the car rental agencies are now located. My wife is a fast break member as well. Maui and the BI both had a fast break member line. She doesn't remember it on Kauai (but she was the first one in after the flight there.

On any island, my wife heads for the car rental agency as soon as she leaves the plane. On Kauai, you cross the street and FAST BREAK members go directly behind the counter to the bus. Get on the bus and check in where the cars are. I am a PAHIO owner as well, but have always got the best rates on line. I believe that you have to go through PAHIO to be able to pick up the Budget Keys from their desk. After the flight ... I go to the Pahio desk and pick up our room keys ... the return to wait on baggage. About 50% of the time, I have the baggage by the time that my wife circles. If it isn't out yet, she parks in the lot across the street for $1 (a small price not to wait through the masses of people at the car rental counter. About 25% of the time, our baggage comes in on the following flight ... so we head up to WALMART and HILO HATTIES in Lihue (about 2 miles from the airport) and pick up food, etc for the trip, then head back down to baggage claim after the next flight comes in. On the way to KNK, you should stop at either WALMART to get provisions to save money. The FOODLAND in PRINCEVILLE, IMO is high priced. You will also pass a SAFEWAY and FOODLAND in KAPAA on the way to PRINCEVILLE.

We do the same trick in KONA with her heading to the BUDGET bus immediately after we land and I go to Baggage Claim. Last time, she had the car and back well before our luggage was unloaded. Again, there was a parking lot directly across the street ... it may have been $1-$2.

I don't recall where you are staying on the BI, but if you head south toward KONA, there is a COSTCO a couple of miles from the airport. If you head north to WAIKOLOA, there is a decent grocery store in WAIKOLOA that is faily reasonably priced.

Both are beautiful islands ... very different islands ... have fun.

Hi:

For what it's worth- the last time I was in Kauai I rented from Budget and they insisted that I take their liability insurance which I didn't want to take since my own auto ins policy covered me.

I'm not sure if this is still in effect, but if it is I think I could have avoided this extra expense if I had brought my auto insurance card (the one that proves you have ins coverage that you keep in your glove compartment- mandated in Connecticut)

Maybe you could call Budget in advance

We never have much of a wait picking up or returning rental cars. Generally we carry on all our luggage (bathing suits, shorts, and t-shirts pack pretty small ) which puts us ahead of the arriving crowd at the rental shop. Also, we generally take a later return-home flight which may explain why the rental shop is usually vacant when we're returning the car.

Since we have already made our reservation thru Budget would it be worth it to call Pahio and let them know and maybe they can take it over to get our keys at the Pahio desk?

Never hurts to ask ... as a PAHIO owner ... I think their staff is incredibly helpful. If you need a number ... I can look it up for you.
