My husband and I will be traveling with our two boys, ages 11 and 8, and need a recommendation for lodging for one night in Volcano Village. A B&B is OK, but we'd prefer to have a private bath. Thanks!------------------ Susan C. Proud owner at the "Wish I had known about TUG before I bought" Resort IP: Logged |

Our favorite place in Volcano Village is the Kilauea Lodge: http://www.kilauealodge.com/ We have always stayed in "Tutu's Place" which is a 2-bedroom (with twin beds in the 2nd bedroom) cottage offsite (but not far). There is one bathroom in this cottage along with a kitchen, which we've never used. Even if you don't stay here be sure to have dinner here. It is one of the best restaurants on the island. And reservations are a must. They serve a wonderful breakfast for guests only with French toast that is to die for. It's made out of Hawaiian sweetbread and served with coconut syrup. They have several other choices for breakfast as well. We're going back this summer and will be spending three nights there. I can hardly wait! ------------------ Luanne [This message has been edited by Luanne (edited 05-10-2005).] IP: Logged |

Hi Luanne - we were also considering the Volcano House, in one of the less expensive rooms. I read that some of these rooms are below ground, though, and am concerned about critters! Maybe I'll call about Tutu's Place - hope you haven't reserved it already LOL! We'll be there June 30. ------------------ Susan C. We stayed at Bed and Breakfast Mountain View, which is halfway between Hilo and Volcano. We recommend it highly. Jane Chao is a wonderful hostess. She and her husband are working artists, and they have some of their pieces displayed in the house. The first six pictures in this album are of Bed and Breakfast Mountain View. The units do have private baths. One unit, in particular, might work well for you - it has two rooms, adjacent to each other, that share a bath. It's an excellent setup for a family with children. ------------------ Steve Nelson [This message has been edited by snelson (edited 05-10-2005).] [This message has been edited by snelson (edited 05-10-2005).] IP: Logged |

And another excellent choice is Chalet Kilauea. It's a B&B in the town of Volcano and offers excellent rooms and beautiful grounds. We stayed there last October and were very impressed. The Volcano House has the advantage of being right on the rim of Kilauea crater, but the accomodations are much more modest compared to Chalet Kilauea and Kilauea Lodge for about the same price. We'll be there from July 2 - 5. I think you can go in and reserve on line, but calling is good as well. I just called and made our dinner reservations for the three nights we're going to be there. ------------------ Luanne IP: Logged |

We stayed at the Volcano House in the Ohia wing about 2 years ago. The building is across from the lodge itself and has a small library with a great fireplace in a common sitting room. It was the least expensive room we could get at about $80/night. The room was very basic (rustic), large with enough room for a family of 4. The bath was very small. Only room for 1 at a time. My sil/bil had a basement room that was even larger with a good sized bathroom, same price. I don't remember them complaining about critters. We had the best Mai Tais we've had on the island and the dinner was excellent! We did not go for the full buffet breakfast, just the continental one. But, the buffet choices looked wonderful. We would not hesitate to stay there again. It's a great location especially if you plan to see the lava flows at dusk/night. (I personally recommend getting back from the lava fields BEFORE dark, then watch the flow into the ocean at dusk. It gets VERY dark at the park. Flashlights for EACH person are a MUST.) ------------------ Be slow to criticize, quick to compliment. IP: Logged |

Actually any of the B&Bs in Volcano are a good choice as well since the village of Volcano is only a few minutes from the park entrance. ------------------ Luanne IP: Logged |

We stayed in the Gecko Cottage at the Volcano Inn. http://volcanoinn.us/house_gecko_breakfast.html It is cute and was perfect for my family of 4. Also, very reasonable. ------------------ Dunk Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I've had a good life all the way... Jimmy Buffett IP: Logged |

When we stayed there recently, the phone was ringing of the hook for reservations of people who would like to stay there. We happened to stand in their office/little shop. The earlier you call or book online, the better. If they are full, they will recommend another place to you but I did not catch the name.If you do not stay there, treat yourself and make dinner reservations at least once. You will have a delicious meal and good service too. The fireplace too is something to see because of the history how it evolved. The honeymoon suite, where we stayed the first night, had a large shower with double spray heads and a fireplace too but we preferred the second room because it was more sunny and bright and less expensive too. Speaking of the Volcano House breakfast buffet, they had the absolute best bacon I've ever had in my life. It's the standard by which I measure all bacon. Thick, crisp, but not too tough. Sounds weird I know, but I still think of that bacon every time I have breakfast and bite into a piece and realize "no, not as good as Volcano House." My only regret now is I didn't try the Mai Tai's there. Oh well, there's always next time! TomIP: Logged |

I wanted to add one more recommendation for the Hale Ohia Cottages in Volcano. We stayed there in February for one night and were extremely pleased. Beautiful quiet grounds and interesting rooms (I believe all had private baths). And if you like cats, you'll love Dixon, the resident host.

A woman after my own heart. Only 46 days until we check in to Tutu's Place! (And only 32 days until we set foot on Hawaiian soil.) ------------------ Luanne IP: Logged |

We stayed in one of the basement rooms at the Volcano House, and it was fine. I would recommend staying there, because you can just walk to the lodge and look out at the crater. We had 4 in the room, and it was actually large for us. We would definitely stay there again.IP: Logged |
