St. Thomas has received a reputation as being an unsafe island. If I were a St. Thomas resident involved in drugs or other illegal or unsavory practices I might feel unsafe. The island does have its share of local crime. However, I'm a tourist, a visitor, and once a year I return to stay at my timeshare there. I rent a car and freely go about the island (at times, by myself, a middle aged woman). I never feel unsafe wherever I go on the island. Of course, I don't visit those parts of the island where I have no vacation business. I don't visit certain parts of town here in the suburbs, either. I also have many resident friends after 9 years of timesharing down there who have lived there for a lot longer. Not one of them has ever had a problem with crime. All that said, I do have to admit that just the past two days there have been two robberies of tourists at resorts. This seems isolated, like a little crime wave. No one was hurt, but it sure can put a damper on a vacation. Then again, my sister was robbed in her timeshare room on St. Maarten and another friend robbed in his room there as well. My dad was "mugged" on Hawaii. I hear reports all the time from various destinations. I will be back in St. Thomas in August. I will not fear for my safety at all. I can't wait. Where are you considering buying? If you want any other information, please feel free to e-mail me. Gerie IP: Logged |

When I was on the island I was told, at night, to go only by cab to my desination and return by cab. In fact, many of the restaurants we visited at night had men posted outside to prevent problems and they would call a cab for you.Several months after we returned home we read of a tourist who was killed during a mugging at night. I was thining of purchasing at the new Marriot they are building there but decided against it for the safety reasons. IP: Logged |

The only way to get around the island is by car, so unless you have a rental, you would have to take a cab. This is day or night.
I am curious to know where you had dinner. In all the years of visiting St. Thomas I have never seen sentries posted to prevent problems. The only place I might even think of that happening is at the Green House, which often has over-imbibing patrons who might get out of control. These are usually tourists, not residents, though. I have noticed cab drivers waiting outside restaurants to offer rides. In fact, it often seems that cab driving must be the #1 career down there because there are so many...LOL>

Gerie, I'm surprised. I guess you never went to Virgilio's downtown at night. We always rented a car but NEVER went downtown at night with it. V's will tell you, when you call for a res, to take a cab and you will be met outside. They then call a cab for you when you're leaving and escort you to the cab. This was with my husband and I so not just for women. LindaIP: Logged |

I'd heard, so knew, in the downtown area where the Cuzzins is you needed to use a taxi at night as close parking is limited and the area not the best. We have only had lunch and during the day no problem. So not suprised about Virgilio's as it's downtown also right? We have never encountered a problem driving ourselves all over the rest of the island for dinner at night including the Frenchtown area. Our last visit was winter '04 and have been visiting STT since '86. Would recommend everyone knows the roads your traveling at night and if you don't taxi it as road signs are not a strong point and you don't find places to stop & ask.IP: Logged |

OK, Linda, I've never been to Virgilio's, and the only dining I've done at night downtown has been at Green House or Tavern on the Waterfront, and I drove to both. I also see Tina's point, that familiarity certainly helps. I know where to park, so feel secure that I won't be walking in any areas that might not be touristy. Basically, the only places I might go for dinner at night that would perhaps be questionable are those few in town behind the Waterfront. Perhaps my familiarity with the island and being a New Yorker keep me from being overly cautious. I can see where a newbie might easily end up in a place where he or she would not necessarily want to be. Then, again, there are so many absolutely safe places to dine. But, like Tina, I've driven everywhere for dinner and only taken cabs or other transportation if I thought I was going to get stinkin' drunk, like perhaps the Monday night party at the Castle....LOL. Please go to www.virginislandsdailynews.com and scroll down for info on the latest rash of armed robberies in St. Thomas. Not good! I'm an owner at one of the properties and we're all very concerned. LindaIP: Logged |

Sadly there is a high rate of poverty on this beautiful but small island, not that it's an excuse. I'm sure they are working hard to catch this guy.IP: Logged |

Gerie,I went to the Charthouse and there are other restaurants in the same area. All had posted "guards." I am glad that you have never had a bad experience but please, for your own safety, heed the warnings and experience of others. Dave IP: Logged |

St. Croix used to be the island with a reputation for crime. It is unfortunate that it has spread to St. Thomas.IP: Logged |

We were in St. Thomas in early December (2004) and crime was a bit of a problem then. The week we were there, there was an armed robbery just down the road at Red Hook in a restaurant while tourists were there, and we were warned to be careful at night and to not walk in Charlotte Amalie at night at all. That said, we drove around the island for a day, and walked with our two children in Charlotte Amalie during the day, and felt perfectly safe. We took normal precautions (carried $ in front/snapped pockets...)-the same that we take if we go to Taste of Chicago during the summer. St. Thomas is considered by many to be the most cosmopolitan island in the Caribbean. The population is really too high for its size and amount of jobs. The large influx of tourists coming in, especially on cruise ships (sometimes 7 in one day), creates the perfect environment for those with a more criminal intent. I personally wouldn't buy a timeshare there b/c the maintenance fees/taxes are quite hight compared to some other islands, and for us, there are many other, more laid back islands that have more beauty, charm and culture than St. Thomas that we would prefer to go to. This is just my opinion, however. You need to decide how comfortable you feel and if it is a location that you would enjoy returning to more than once! IP: Logged |

Daverock Is The Chart House back? Or is this the old The Chart House location in Frenchtown that's been through ~two name changes in recent years if I recall right. I don't recall seeing any posted guards anywhere we went, maybe they were temporary. Our last trip Feb.'04 went to Epernay's in Frenchtown, Randy's, Sibs,Molly Malones, Bryans and various others .IP: Logged |
