I teach at a college, so I often have the first or second week off for spring break. I'm thinking of trying to go to Cancun for that week in 2006 or 2007. However, I'm a sedate middle-aged person who just wants a nice pool and beach, and maybe some historic ruins. If Cancun is going to be overrun by rowdy young people in early March, perhaps I'd be happier going some other time. And, probably none of my students want to run into me on vacation. So, what is Cancun like this time of year? Anyone who is going in the next couple of weeks, maybe you can report back on the level of drunken revelry, and whether it is all over Cancun, or just in certain areas. IP: Logged |

Crazy enough to ruin some vacations. I would avoid March but things quiet down in April.IP: Logged |

Remember this :You and the rowdy ones will NOT be: 1. Eating at the same restaurants 2. Hanging out at the same hotel (plan wisely!) 3. Pursuing the same leisure interests We have been to Cancun many times during Spring Break. Rarely have we been bothered by Spring Breakers. We always stay at the Royal Sands - so that helps. Plus, we eat dinner at 7, and are back at the resort by 10ish. The party-goers are just getting started at 10 - so we rarely see them! Make sure you only stay at a resort with a strict Spring Break policy. I know some people even had trouble with college kids at the Royals. We have not been troubled by them. We have however, been annoyed by loud drunken adults around the pool bar during Happy Hour. Also - don't think many revelers will be making the trek to Chichen Itza. Don't let the college kids keep you from enjoying Cancun! Just stay away from: Coco Bongo Senor Frogs Carlos & Charlies Daddy O's ------------------ Janis IP: Logged |

Also, the later you ride the busses, the worse it gets. 7 PM to dinner is usually OK. It's the later crowd, with their tall plastic drinks from who knows where, who get on the busses and are smoking, and drinking, and the bus drivers can't say anything. As Janis mentioned, they are not out and about in the morning (sleeping it off) and they don't get to the pools til afternoon. Also, I read in the local paper that the numbers are way down from years past, so this should help.

I'm not much of a drinker, so I'm not worried about running into rowdies at clubs and such. The places I'd be most likely to run into them are on the beach or at the pools. I'm hoping to avoid being the only overweight middle-aged person on a beach full of buff youngsters in skimpy bathing suits! I'd probably stay at the Royal Sands or at Club Internacional de Cancun -- do they have private beaches? I take it the students usually don't stay at the Royals -- too expensive, maybe?

There are no private beaches in Cancun - they are all public.However.....for the most part, people go to the beach that is in front of their own hotel. For one thing, you can't use anyone else's beach chairs or chaises. So it's not very comfy to crash another hotel's beach area. Club International has its own small beach area - but it's not as beautiful as you will find on the part of the island that is the long part of the 7 Plus, there is a wild & rocking public beach right next to VCI. It will be very raucous during Spring Break. I would suggest you stay at one of the tri-Royals if you can. Much quieter, and away from the downtown party scene. ------------------ Janis IP: Logged |

Students can afford the Royals. At least the ones that I know. Who you are referring to is rowdy people widely categorized as "spring breakers".I'm sure they can afford it also. However, rowdy people would most likely not be at The Sands because there aren't any rowdy people there. The Royals' policy is no spring breakers. Don't know what that means.Old people only? No offense to anyone but no one walks with Spring Breaker printed on their forehead , so I find the whole process ignorant. The thing is though rowdy spring breakers do not think like this. They want to be where the party is present.Students come in all ages. As long as they have a 25 yr old and a $500 deposit during break then they are welcomed at The Royals. So those who aren't rowdy and are on break are probably in the villa next door but you can not tell because they know how to uphold themselves. They resemble the younger but mature crowd. You know, the ones who can party at the club and come back to the resort like normal people. Just pointing this out so that every young person (under 25) is not looked at and ignorantly labeled as a "spring breaker". I can imagine that people sit by the pools and think to themselves. "Oh, not one of them!"(I know this goes through some of your minds when you see a younger person during break, lol) Yes, I know, I'm taking it a bit personal but I must clarify. JudyThought I would tell you about my experiences with Spring Break this year in Cancun. We stayed at the Royal Islander from March 12-19. We were totally unprepared for the line that we faced for Immigrations - we waited on line for 2.5 hours! For those of you familiar with the Cancun airport, the line zig-zagged on the ground floor where Immigrations is located, went up the stairs, zig-zagged at the top of the stairs, coiled around several of the stores in the airport waiting area, went up the incline to the small security area, headed down the hallway to TGI Friday's where the line coiled back upon itself!! My DH and I kept saying that this was the first and last time that we would come to Cancun during Spring Break! However, once we entered the country, we had a great time and did not really encounter crowds. As other TUGgers have indicated, things were okay if you stayed away from the places where the college students congregated (unless that's where you prefer to be, of course!). For us, we were either on a fishing boat, at Chichen Itza, or relaxing at the resort. There were some college-age individuals at the Royals, but they were not rowdy. We asked several people for an explanation about the long line and here are the factors they listed: 1. Many of the timeshare resorts have Saturday check-in. That means people going to resorts in Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and perhaps Cozumel must all go through the Cancun airport. Our Royal's host indicated that a new airport was being built near Tulum and should be opened in about a year. This should take some of the congestion away from the Cancun airport. Perhaps when you go, this new airport will be operational. 2. It was Spring Break and that means more people coming to Cancun! 3. Our flight arrived at about 3 pm and our host indicated that the lines are worst midday. She recommended arrival early in the morning or at night. Hope that helps in your planning. Looking back, I think the worst part was the shock of such a long line. If you know about it beforehand and can have a plan (bring food to munch on & have your companions hold your place in line when you take bathroom breaks), then it is tolerable. Evelyn IP: Logged |

I think the new airport is just in the dream stage, unfortunately. Maybe Jim in Cancun can shed some light on this, but my salesman told me it may be light years away from reality.IP: Logged |

Evelyn,You have scared me to death as that is the exact week we are going next year! To top it off, it will be our first time out of the country with our children, and I have a child who cannot stand or walk for long periods. We usually bring a wheelchair when we travel, but were concerned about bringing it to Cancun because it might not fit in the cab to the resort. (We figured we could get wheelchairs at the airport...but that now sounds too risky if the airport is too packed.) I know my kids could not stand a 2.5 hour line. I'm wondering if we should rethink the trip.... Sharon IP: Logged |

If it's any comfot - yours will not be the only kids in the immigration line. Tons and tons of families will be waiting with you. Somehow, they all manage to make it through and forget about the line once they reach the fabulous beach. I wouldn't worry about fitting a wheel chair in a taxi. Many of them are Suburbans - and if you use Brant Boston, you can specifically request that he send the Suburban - so you should have plenty of room. Personally, I wouldn't cancel a trip to Cancun because of the long immigration lines. The reward is worth the battle. ------------------ Janis IP: Logged |

Sharon, you may be pushed to the head of the line, if you are wheelchairbound. IP: Logged |

I would recommend staying at any of the Royals Resorts. The all inclusive resorts around Cancun will have your spring break crowds. The Royals will be very quite and probably just what your looking for in a great vacation. To help you with taking a chance on long lines, consider flying in on a Friday night, try to book a lock off for one night and you will miss the Saturday crowd! IP: Logged |

Oops! Forgot to add that officials were pulling out families with children and taking them to the head of the line. A friend who had gone to Puerto Vallarta a couple of week prior to this said this policy was also in effect at that airport. Sorry to have panicked all those families with children by my omission. How about Puerto Vallarta for spring break? We have kids and can only travel during the busy times. We love PV and don't have the "spring breakers" issues. IP: Logged |

There is a special line at Cancun airport for passengers in wheelchairs. It would also help if you ask your airline for "meet and greet" when you arrive in Cancun. If that service is available, then an airline crew member will escort you through the wheelchair line, and you won't be waiting. While it is highly unlikely that you will be made to wait in the general line with a wheelchair passenger, just in case, though, bring some drinks and snacks for the kids. They can sit along the wall within your sight while you take turns standing in line. IP: Logged |
