I thought I would start a new thread on this. Someone mentioned in the other thread that it costs $3 per wash load to do laundry at the Royals. Isn't that quite a lot?

Being a big family, we do laundry often while on vacation, many times every day! (It helps us pack much lighter as well, of course.) One of the things I didn't like about the Southern California resorts is that they had no washer and dryers in the units, and I had to keep finding and feeding change into the washers and dryers in the hallway. And of course, I felt like we were spending way too much time in the laundry room!

I'm not sure how much 4kg would be (someone mentioned that was the limit on a load) but does anyone here with a large family or group feel like they spend a lot of time getting laundry done? Do you have to monitor it constantly to avoid theft? (Or does an attendant help you out if you compensate her?)

Thanks,

Sharon

Doing laundry at the Royals is very simple if you make friends with the attendant. Olivia has been the laundry attendant since the Royal Sands opened. If your very nice to her and tip her she will take care of your laundry from start to finsh (fold) even pack it in suitcases at the end of your trip.

It costs about $3 to do a wash and dry. All you need to bring is laundry detergent which you can buy at the resort or Walmart and I also bring dryer sheets from home.

The size limitation is equal to about a medium size load in a US washer. If find in Cancun all we really wash is underware as we spend the majority of the week in swim suits and put clothes on in the evening which normally don't get too dirty. The kids can usually wear an outfit twice.

Sharon,

You do laundry "many times every day"? I'm sure that's a bit of a stretch (I hope so, remember you're on vacation) With that being said, we usually do laundry once or twice a week (depending on how much we pack to start with). Maybe Tuesday & Friday or just on Wednesday. It seems to work out OK. Sure I'll have to wash when we get back home, but it saves vacation time.

Maybe I should have put a comma in there...I meant that we do laundry often, and many times, that means every day!

Wow, I never realized our laundry habits would become the fodder for so much discussion.

Yes, we do laundry almost every day while on vacation in a place where the washer and dryer is in the unit. It's so easy...why not? Most washers in the units are small and can just about fit what the five of us have worn that day, plus towels. If it's a bigger washer, like the one we have at our home timeshare, we can fit two or three days of laundry in there...but I find that rare. In fact, we use the washing machine as the laundry basket, and our dirty clothes go right in there. I don't think any of us want to wear the same clothes again without washing them! To top that off, my now teenage son easily goes through at least two outfits per day.

Do the rest of you pack seven plus outfits per person for a week away? For the five of us, plus jackets, swimwear, and the "backpack full of stuff to do on the plane", that would take up an awful lot of luggage space. We only travel with two suitcases. Remember, we are already pushing a child in a wheelchair, so we don't want to be hauling a lot of luggage. I'd rather throw a load in every day than carry extra suitcases.

To us, one of the best things about timesharing is the presence of the kitchen and the washer/dryer in the unit.

Sharon,

My husband and I have different views on this. I prefer to have many outfits (up to 7 for the 7 days including some dresses and lots of shoes for dinner) and he prefers to pack light. He packs about 3 to 4 days worth of clothes and then about mid-week has his laundry done. We usually drop off our laundry on the way down to the beach or pool and then pick up our laundry on the way back to the room. They are always very friendly and have always treated my husband very well. If we had a washer and dryer in our room, I'm sure we would be doing our laundry every day too! Why not! Keep in mind that you don't have to wash your beach towels. You just keep turning them in to get new/fresh/clean ones! Have a great time! When do you leave?

When we first started going to Cabo there was no econmical laundry service so we use to take 7-8 days of changes of clothes for 4 people. If your teenage son changes clothes 2 times a day that would be 14-16 changes of changes of cloths for us! Now we take 4 days and in the middle of the trip we do a laundry adventure. We found a place with a self service laundry, Deli, grocery store, ice cream parlor and coin laundry so we can occupy or time while we wait for everything to finish. I can't fathom doing this every day! Just curious and no offense intended, Do you do laundry 365 times a year? Harvey

Sharon,
Sorry about the confusion on your post. I understand now. I guess if you had a washer in your unit it would make sense to do laundry every day (or almost every day).

What we usually do is pack for 5 days and do laundry at least once. If we pack a bit lighter we may do laundry twice.

Our clothing use is much different on beach vacations than on other vacations. Virtually every day we are wearing one of two swimsuits, swimsuit coverups, and/or t-shirts. During the evening I wear shorts or pants and a polo. I can easily wear the same shirt two nights and sometimes three because I am only wearing it for about 3 hours. We each also tend to buy a couple of T-shirts each time so that lessens our packing even more. The laundry rate at the Royals is very reasonable considering it is for both washing and drying. My suggestion is to pack light, plan a mid-trip wash, and buy more clothing in Cancun if you need it! Have fun!

TSGURU99 does the same thing our family does. We are in our swimsuits 75% of the vacation so actual clothes get worn so little they can be worn more then once.

Hi Sharon. Relax about the laundry issue. If you like to pack light, do it. Then do your one load each day. We were at the Royal Sands in February and I thought it would be a drag not to have washers in the units. But, remember, you don't have do to towels so it really cuts down on the wash. For the two of us, I did two loads mid week. The laundry room is like a moment back in time. The girl working will do everything for you if you leave her a small tip. I know they work for PENNIES so I didn't mind a bit. I bet you can get by with one load a day, with tip, you're out $25. Easier than packing all the extra stuff! Enjoy it. Think of it as your $25 splurge for the week! Have a great vacation.

Oh, I am reading this thread with much interest. I have never been to the Royals and know little about them. However, I am looking for an exchange there.
Please tell me is there only one laundry area for all three Royal Resorts?

I do too Sharon. With a family of 5 I don't like to haul around a lot of luggage. Lets face it mom and dad do most of the hauling around the airport, in and out of the car, packing and unpacking so I like to travel light. Which means, laundry just about every day!

Yep! And on somedays (sheets and towels) 2-3 loads in that day. If I don't it gets behind and becomes overwhelming.

Just to clarify.......it costs $3 to wash and dry because you are putting that much in change into the machines? Or do you give that amount to the girl who works there?

How do you go about asking her to do it all for a tip? And what is a decent tip for a load of laundry?

Seriously, pennies a day??

Everything at the Royal Resorts is charged to your room except tips. I typically tip about $2 per load. As long as you are nice to Olivia (day attendent) she will normally wash and fold for you without asking. You just need to allow to leave everything there for a couple of hours. I normally try and get my laundry there first thing 8am so she has time. Olivia leaves at 3pm I believe and I have never used the evening attendents.

You bring your soap, go to the laundry with your clothes and she greets you. As soon as a machine opens up, she takes your room information and takes you to the machine. I think they weighed to clothes too to make sure they didn't overload. She adds the tokens. I added the soap and the clothes. She takes the room information. I handed her a tip (I tipped two dollars) and asked when to be back. She tells you the time. When I came back the laundry was finished and folded.

Pennies a day was not the correct term. It seems like that to me. Our maid earned 6 or 7 dollars a day. She had one day off. The wait staff earned the most because of the direct tipping on your receipt. And, they speak English to get that job. However, the tips were shared with the Royals. I remember something like the wait staff got 30%. So the cocktail waitress made $40 a night, including her tips and a little more on weekends. I asked the cocktail waitress where she lived and how much she paid for rent. She lived just outside of Cancun and paid $350 a month for her rent. It put the wages in a bit of context for me. Hope that clarifies.
