I want to go to Mazatlan. Wife says no way, even to a cruise. She believes everything is like the the border towns. How do I get her there??

WoW! Does that sound exactly the way my husband sounded around 13 years ago. I wanted to get out of the Michigan cold and suggested Mexico and he said no way ....{offensive remarks removed by moderator} I finally got him to go and we went to Puerto Vallarta. He loved it! We bought at Paradise Village at that time, super cheap prices then. We went back the following year for two weeks and than started going back for four weeks. As he says that are the nicest most helpful people that he has seen. HE LOVES IT THERE AND CANNOT WAIT TO GO BACK EACH YEAR.

Harry, we are going to Mazatlan in August. Staying at the Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay, nothing like a border town. We've never been but the pictures on tripadvisor.com and expedia certainly look nice. Maybe you could suggest to her that you go to Mazatlan this time, and next time she gets to pick anywhere she wants. Just a thought.

Harry,
I think if she tries it she will like it. We own 2 TS's in Hawaii and love it but it is a long way to go from the Midwest...cost and time.
So one year we decided to try Mexico as that was all that was available with our trade in a 2BR at the last minute. We wanted to take my husband's cousin and wife who could not travel the long distance to HI.
We stayed at the El Cid El Moro Towers in Mazatlan on the beach and loved it. They bought FF points that year and the next year they booked it. We bought 300,000 points the next year and we all went again this year and they took some of their family. The swimming pools are wonderful and it is always nice in Mexico in the winter. Not necessarily so in the USA always.
Since that first time we have gone to Cabo (our favorite place in Mexico)several times and have two 1BRs(lock-out) fixed week at Playa Grande in November. Also went back to Cabo in January when last min. airfares dropped....Nearly ended up on the beach but found a week using HGVC points at the Costa Real on the Marina. We love to deepsea fish and now have a Marlin on the wall at our dealership!
Good Luck,
Judy

HARRY; We were also hesitent about going to Mexico, not because of the {offensive term removed by moderator} because without them we wouldn't have food on the table. We drive from Vancouver-California each year and it's all agricultural and the fields are full of men and women picking our crops for us to eat. We went to Mexico, Puerto Vallarta 10 years ago and loved it there, bought timeshare and now go back every year same time frame winter(Jan-March) for us. Mind you we did go to Cancun and that didn't appeal to us, water blue, yes, but we don't go to Mexico just for the blue water. We found Cancun void of any Mexican atmosphere and no quaint town and wonderful areas which PV has to offer, but to each his own. I hope you can persuade her, choose your resort and area wisely and you will love PV I am sure.

Paula,
We tried Cancun last Sept. also and even though it was nice and warm we did'nt like it as much as Mazatlan or Cabo san Lucas. Also too many of them are AI and even though it is convienent it costs way too much. WE spend a lot less at the others just charging to our rooms. Also usually buy breakfast items and eat in our timeshare. There are lots of neat places to eat out also. I usually bring a cooler filled with snacks, cereal etc. that we will use up while there so we can use it to bring back our frozen fish we catch...We have a freezer full of wonderful fish from Mexico.

Harry - I've got a few albums of our trip to Mazatlan on my webshots site. Click on the URL below. The ocean views and sunsets alone are worth the trip.

Denise... you don't have to be Mexican to be a little "baffled" by that remark! { offensive term removed by moderator} I'd be too embarrassed to admit my spouse was that ignorant. That's just me.

Anyway...

Harry,

I was the same about Mexico, until I went to Rosarito for lobster 3 years ago. Then to an all-inclusive in Playa del Carmen... then to the Royal Caribbean in Cancun 6 months later! Needless to say WE are hooked!

Just got back form another ( our 5th ) overnight stay. The taco's and beer in town were good, but the lobster in Puerto Nuevo was FANTASTIC!!! If the Wife is more comfortable in a more "Americanized" setting... one of the big Cancun, PV, Cabo, or Mazatlan resorts will be just fine. Good luck!

Kevin

I apologize to everyone for not taking action sooner to remove the offensive racial slur in this post. Whether it was intentional or not, it is not appropriate on these boards.

I have reservations for one of the Royals in 2006 and am very excited about the trip.

However, I must say that the recent publicity in Indonesia about the Australian who received 20 years for drugs found in her luggage has raised concerns for me about traveling abroad.

I am not sure if people plant drugs in luggages in airports and I am certain that foreign laws are sometimes more strict (like the penalty in Singapore for littering or disposing of chewing gum, for example). Additionally, I also heard that this mth, there is some advisory about traveling to Mexico due to budget issues where the Mexican police has been furloughed. I am not sure if Tug members have any advice to my fears (other than "Stay home" which would be a sad option)

Judy - the odds of that happening to you are lower than the odds of your plane not making it, being attacked by a shark, struck by lightning. I'm not trying to minimize the fact that you have a concern but just to suggest that the odds are very long indeed that it's actually something that has a chance of happening to you while traveling.

My husband had the same response to visiting Mexico on a cruise and unfortunately I am a Spanish minor who specialized in Latin American history, so he wouldn't believe me. So I decided nothing I was going to say would convince him to go and visit the area I had been reading about and the Mayan ruins that I'd been wanting to see for years. I decided it was time to bring in the big guns and convinced my brother in law to talk to him about what a wonderful time he'd had in Cancun and how much like any other American resort it is.
So we went down without the kid (because that would have been too much worry for him) and had a great vacation...(honey moon of sorts)

Well he was the one who ended up talking me into buying a timeshare at the Royals and convinced me we would have plenty to do year after year and never get bored. My son is learning Spanish.. maybe some day he'll learn to scuba with me and we all go to the Mayan ruins together. My husband meanwhile can lie around on the beach, play golf or just listen to mariachi music and all without worry. One day I may even get him to Mexico city to see the cathedral. Wish me luck!

If anything, I would say that the police forces are actually growing. Everytime I go to Vallarta I see more and more of the tourist police... and even more of the federalies. Always have felt very safe.

With regards to people planting things in the luggage... why would you leave your luggage unattended in Mexico or anywhere else for that matter and if you are with your luggage, how would someone put something in there without you knowing it unless it was a worker from the airline - which again, could happen anywhere.

Well, I have officially joined your group. My DH says no way will he go to Mexico, either. His loss.

So you may have to do what I am doing, go without her.
