We are visiting this resort in August with children age 14 and 10. Any information about the resort/surrounding area would be welcome. We will be driving there from Vancouver and moving on to Jasper at the end of our stay. Are insects likely to be a problem? Any recommendations about the most scenic route to drive there from Vancouver? Thanks for your help. IP: Logged |

Here are a couple of websites worth exploring http://www.csrd.bc.ca/f.html This one has links to other useful sites.sicamous.com/users/kramerb/maps/shulakeframes.html If your family likes nature, sailing, fishing, etc. this is a great place to be. But don't expect too many comforts. Be aware of the rapidly changing weather conditions in that area. In August bugs should not be a problem. Hope somebody else will give you driving advice. Have a nice trip. MikeS IP: Logged |

A couple of other suggestions you may find interesting and helpful. First, there is plenty of general area info on Tourism Shuswap website www.shuswap.bc.ca Second, should you be interested in boat or houseboat rental at Sicamous try Bluewater Houseboats (tel 1-800-663-4024) or Scamous Creek Marina (tel 836-4611). Houseboat rentals range from modest to very expensive, but some are luxurious with bathrooms, full kitchens, hot tubs, TVs and even fish sonar ! Another less expensive option for sightseeing on the lake is to use the Shuswap Ferry Lake Service (Tel 836-2200) Third, there are many inexpensive fast food outlets, but if you want something better try the Mara Lake Inn about 3 km. south of the village on Hwy 97 MikeS IP: Logged |

Thank you for the information Mike. We are pleased to hear that the insects won't be too much of a problem in August - midges are a nightmare. Are the fast food outlets you mentioned anywhere near the resort? I had imagined that it might be rather remote and we would have to cater for ourselves. Thanks also for the tip about the changing weather conditions - we will certainly be packing the waterproofs! I will have a good look at the websites you mentioned. Thanks again. Jean IP: Logged |

Jean:You are right in your assumption that the resort is quite remote. I've not been there - wanted to drive up while we were passing through last fall but couldn't take the time. The fast food places Mike was referring to would be a half hour or more from the resort. Bev IP: Logged |

JeanIt has been several years since we stayed in that RCI resort and I don't remember all details. But if you go to the area website (see my last post) and follow instructions you will see a dozen or so restaurants listed as well as a few shopping malls. You will certainly need to buy groceries and do at least some cooking. I don't want to disagree with Bev ( she is from BC, I am not ! ) but I thought the time it took me to drive from the resort to the stores was more like 20 min. Well, OK, I may be wrong, but you will need a car whatever you do. There is nothing of substance within walking distance to the resort. You can get a good idea of the milage between various places by studying a map available on the website. Have a good trip ! MikeS IP: Logged |

Thanks MikeS and Bev for your replies. Lots of useful information on the website. We will have to make sure we stock up with groceries before we get there although we are hiring a car anyway for the trip. Were the units well equipped in the kitchen department? How easy is it to get detailed maps for walking etc.? We thought we might try to get some maps before we go so we don't have to waste vacation time searching for them. Also the children are wondering how cold the lake will be for swimming. (Around here you have to be pretty spartan even in the summer to swim in our nearest lake!) Thanks again. Jean IP: Logged |

JeanRegarding detailed local maps my only suggestion would be to e-mail local Chambers of Commerce at info@sachamber.bc.ca and/or request@northshuswapbc.com to see if they could provide you what you need. You may also try e-mailing a local commercial publishing outfit info@travelsmartdirectories.com for advice. As the name implies they publish travel directories and could be of some help. Also check out Tourism British Columbia at www.hellobc.com People do swimm in the lake in the summer and, unless you happen to hit an unseasonally cool weather, it should not be a problem. Thanks for your reply, Mike. I have managed to order some maps which should be useful and have learned of a book "Shuswap Pathways" which we may try to get hold of. Jean IP: Logged |

From Vancouver, stay with the Trans Canada highway,[ the Fraser Canyon is worth the extra time. Stop at Hells Gate. ]From Salmon Arm Stay with #1 to Banff/Jasper Hwy. then head north.Come back to Vancouver past Clearwater and stop to see Wells Gray Park.Try to spend a lot of time on the road stopping at the many many various things to see. I have made the above trip at least 10 times.IP: Logged |

Thanks for this information - I think we will take your advice about travelling via the Fraser Canyon. Is it feasible to do a day trip to see some of Wells Gray Park from Shuswap Lake? We are going on to Jasper for one night after our stay at St. Ives and then moving down to Canmore (via the Columba Icefield) for a further week. We fly out from Calgary so we won't actually return to Vancouver. Jean IP: Logged |

Yes a daytrip is doable. Head north up the Adams River[It is between little and big shushwap]till you get to Agatte Bay, which is on Adams lake. Then go east to Louis Creek, then North to Wells Gray. You will have some gravel road along Adams Lake. But it is a good road with beautiful veiws. About 40Kms of gravel. 2.5 hours driving one way total. For swimming I advise a rubdown with baby oil first then a dry off with towell after. This will prevent swimmers itch. The worlds best corn on the cob comes from the area you are camping in.IP: Logged |

Thanks for this information Bruce - I think we will try to get to Wells Gray - sounds like it might be a bit quieter than some of the National Parks. I had never heard of swimmers itch before but have now done some research so I know what to expect! We look forward to trying the corn on the cob. Thanks again for your help. Jean IP: Logged |
