We will be spending one night in Vanvouver next week. We will arrive in Sattle around 11:30 AM and drive up. What should we see and do in that day and night? Also suggestions for fun things to do in Whistler. We have rented a car. Thanks, BettyIP: Logged |

We will be in Vancouver in mid June. I booked through HotWire a 4* in the Vancouver West district for $100 per night. It turned out to be the Hyatt. We're looking forward to the trip. AltonIP: Logged |

Have you done searches on this board for "Vancouver" and "Whistler". I think you'll find these subjects have been chatted about before.Bev IP: Logged |

I assume you are flying into SEA from the East Coast, so you will need to deal with the three hour time change. I suggest you head directly to Vancouver and get checked in as soon as you can. Grab a bite to eat along the way if you get hungry - there are plenty of places along the freeway. If you still have energy after arriving in Vancouver, get out and explore Vancouver a bit. Most likely, though, you will be tired and ready for bed by the time you arrive and get checked in. Even if you're not dealing with jet lag, I still suggest heading straight to Vancouver, and then just spend more time in Vancouver in the evening. There's plenty to see and do. I think Vancouver is the nicest city on the West Coast - I prefer it to San Francisco except that it rains quite a bit more in Vancouver. ------------------ Steve Nelson IP: Logged |

Steve, that's interesting. I was in Vancouver for two days to get my flu shot last October and until then, San Francisco was my favorite. Now I love Vancouver. To me it is a little more relaxed, cleaner and slower. My son who lives in SF says that is why he wouldn't like it! LizIP: Logged |

Vancouver (and Seattle to a lesser degree), have much of the same feel to me that San Francisco did when I first arrived in the Bay Area in 1973. San Francisco is not nearly as attractive now as it was then. ------------------ Steve Nelson IP: Logged |

Whistler is open for skiing until June 5 this year. On June 11, Blackomb Mtn opens for summer glacier and snow field skiing. ------------------ Steve Nelson IP: Logged |

We have been pretty much all over this planet and I have to say that Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities you will find in the world. Depending on what you like to do, we enjoyed roller blading/walking the sea wall in Stanley Park. We enjoyed the visit to Granville Island, Grouse Mountain Tramway, the beach near the west end and Stanely Park, shopping on Robson Street, driving the Sea To Sky Highway to Whistler. IP: Logged |

Hi, Betty...I second the suggestion about the Grayline buses, if you have the energy. Even if you didn't get off, you'd probably see more of Vancouver than any other way. The cost is $32 CAD for 2 days, but we got a discount through the hotel concierge. Tickets are available many places. When you find a hotel, ask if they have the tickets. We just got back from Vancouver....a wonderful place!

A second for the GrayLine tour company. We used them 2 years ago for a Whistler tour from Vancouver, a Vancouver City Lights night tour, and an overnight tour from Vancouver to Victoria. Booked all online on the Grayline site before going. For a hotel, got a great one, at a good price on Priceline. Have fun!IP: Logged |

This is quite the popular plan! We, too, are flying into Vancouver, spending two days and then driving to Whister for a week. Maybe it has something to do with those Sunday checkins? LOL!Please keep the ideas and suggestions coming. With only a day or two, we'd like to make the most of it. Deb IP: Logged |

the Grouse Mountain chairlift is really worthwhile - you ride up in a 100 passenger car with fabulous views of the city and harbour - cruise ships, freighters, and city. It is used for skiing in winter, and by hikers to come down in summer, and by all kinds of tourists - will really give you a sense of the city at large.Vancouver as a city of many Asian and European cultures - and from downtown, you can easily see "GAstown" and the earliest European buildings, and "Chinatown", a bustling active source of goods for many of our Asian communities. If it's a nice day and you have time to go to Grouse Mountain (I think the bus tours go there), it's fun to walk and see the grizzly bears and the logging show and eat lunch at a table with a view. It's also worth stopping at Capilano Suspension Bridge on the way down from Grouse Mountain and walking across the bridge and to the new tree walk (I'm not sure what it's called but it's included in the admission price). Vancouver is such a great city... one or two days aren't nearly enough so you'll probably have to plan a return visit :-) Kris IP: Logged |

A FREE alternative to Capilano Suspension bridge is Lynn Canyon: http://www.dnv.org/ecology/ Rick IP: Logged |

Kris,I have only been on the Capilano Bridge once or twice, but have been to Lynn Canyon many many times. It is a beautiful park. The bridge is fun, but you can also walk down to the river and play and swim there if you want (though the water is VERY cold!) But the best part is still the FREE part, and it is not "touristy" like Capilano, since only local people really know about it. Rick IP: Logged |

Hi,If you have any time in your schedule for SEATTLE, I would like to suggest visiting Paul Allen's "EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC PROJECT" and if your not into music there is an associated Science Fiction Musuem in the same building. You can't miss it cause the building is so ------ ((HATE TO SAY IT ...OK....UGLY))----weird and is located nexts to Seattle's famous Space Needle. You could spend the whole day in the Music Project looking at the history of music from 1910 to the present. If your into Star Wars you will find all the uniforms, space suits, walkie talkies and background props used in Star Trek and all the other science fiction movies and stuff dateing back to the 1800.
And oh yes.....if in the Music Project.....look for a picture of a little blond kid on the dance floor with Paul Revere And The Raiders.....that was me in the summer of '64.......PRETTY COOL.....PRETTY COOL. While in high school I got to tour with Freddie Cannon....Brenda Lee....Little Jimmy Dicken.....The Collin's Kids....and some guy who sang Party Doll and Hula Love.....(Buddy Knoxs)....Buddy Knoxs kicked around with Buddy Holly in the late '50 In those days your could get into a Rock n Roll show for about a $1.00 or two........ can ya believe it? 2005).]

Rick -Call me a sap, but I kinda LIKE the cheesy touristy aspect of Capilano Suspension Bridge. It feels so sweet, and old-fashioned and Northwest-ish that I absolutley love it :-) I like taking the kid's pictures by the totem poles, watching the big trout swimming in their ponds, watching the wood carvers, eating hot dogs and especially watching the nervous foreign tourtists try to make it across the suspension bridge. We'll definitely check out the free spot as well, but IMHO it's all good! Kris IP: Logged |

Do I need a car in Vancouver? It might be a trade off. If I have a car I'd have to pay for the extra day and park it. Without a car, I'd have to pay transport from the airport to hotel and probably get back to the airport to pick up car before leaving for Whistler.Any insights? Deb IP: Logged |

Just returned from Vancouver on Tuesday. Cab fare from airport to downtown is $25 per load. Airporter bus is $12.50 per person (and I assume a bit slower if you are the last hotel dropped off). Public transportation is fantastic. Fares range from $2.25 and up, depending on "zones". One day pass (calendar day) is $8, good for everything. See Granville Island, Gastown, Prospect Park and Chinatown, the "usual" tourest areas. Ride the On/Off buses (Gray Line or Big Bus or Vancouver Trolley). Grayline is a 2 day pass, and runs every 30 minutes - but ends its service around 5:30 PM, don't know about the others. Beautiful parks, clean city and friendly people. Whale watching (Wild Whale Company - in Granville Island - did a great job!)IP: Logged |

We've never found the need for a car in Vancouver. The public transportation is wonderful. If you want to see more, take a tour. Can't be as much as a car rental and the parking fees at most hotels.------------------ Jean IP: Logged |
