Since purchasing a half share at the Marriott Maui resort, I've referred 5 people to their sales rep to make a sales pitch to. Recently, my in-laws visited the property and signed up for a half share themselves. I'm just wondering what you all feel the referrals and the one purchase are worth to Marriott and what an appropriate referral fee should be? Thanks!IP: Logged |

Marriott has a formal referral program which it calls Friendshare. As a Marriott owner, you are eligible to earn Marriott Reward points for making referrals. Each state has its own laws with respect to referrrals. As a New Jersey resident, your referrals must actually purchase a Marriott Vacation Club interest for you to earn points. There are some additional conditions that apply to New Jersey residents. You can find out more about those conditions by calling 800-263-6824.You earn 40,000 points if a referral makes a purchase. Instead, you can choose to have your maintenance fee on your timeshare reduced by 50% on a one-time basis. (Residents of some other states earn 10,000 points merely for making the referral.) For more info on the program, log in at www.mvci.com and click on Friendshare (under the photo) on the next page. IP: Logged |

I just realized as I started to repond that you live in NJ...and there are different rules for each state. Ken H or Ken K will have a better idea about NJ but there are 'special' conditions for that state. In NY, I get 40,000 Marriott reward points or 1/2 year MF if a referral buys, if it was EOY, the points would be 20,000. In NJ, it used to be that you got 10,000 MR points if your referral toured even without a purchase.....but after Fletch took ALL the points Marriott had in the WORLD , I believe they changed that program for NJ. Go to http://www.vacationclub.com/en-us/vc/default.asp and read the NJ rules. Residents of New Jersey are subject to certain conditions. For more information on these special conditions, call 800-263-6824. FriendShare program is void where prohibited by law. edited to say I was composing while Dave M was typing away He is too darn quick for me! ------------------ Pat

The NJ Real Estate Commission has visited us twice. This was due to a lead to the MAR Seaview T/Ss posted on TUG (now removed), and the problems why points haad never been added to my rewards accounts. We were to cease & desist (?) or fines would be levied. When help was requested from Marriott, they refused to respond. In NJ, accepting any type payment, bonus, 'REWARD' for help in the sale of real estate is not permitted unless you have a real estate sales license (perf hanging in a Brokers office.) So, MARs reward system originally set up for NJ (40,000 points if a referal buys on the tour) is actually worded wrong (or maybe can't be worded at all.) Pat is right about state rules...each is different. When my cousins bought at OP...on our tour...we were never credited for the points. In contrast, when an old tugger named Fletch lived in PA, any referral (with or without a purchase) earned him points. When he moved to NJ, his points access stopped. I didn't catch on why until the State paid a visit. (Although at a TUG get together, he warned me...I'm slow & didn't understand what he meant.) In the TUG pages, they do relay to reader to make sure you understant state laws that apply to you for anything you might do in the forums or classifieds. I know some here also had problems with Calif laws on the classifieds. I see you are from NJ (Sparta). You would be surprised who reads what on these pages. I would not give too much info. Additionally, I believe I was told MAR was trying to get some of the State Codes 'Adjusted'. So---a referral is worth nothing if you live in NJ (Following the state laws), until someone figures out how to change them. ------------------ Ken K IP: Logged |

Thanks so much for the incredibly fast responses. I had no idea that the referral program would be so structured. I suppose I'm disappointed by what at least I perceive to be minimal awards considering the value of the sale made but that appears to be a concrete policy of Marriott... Thanks againIP: Logged |

Lar, as a Marriott owner, you have access to the Vacation Club site that Dave and I listed above....go and sign on - lots of good info for you. And I didn't know Fletch used to live in PA, too - that guy sure gets around .------------------ Pat "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans...." John Lennon IP: Logged |

I think MAR may have been able to get some of the codes changed in NJ in the past several months. I still don't understand many of the 'rules'.Checking the MVCI, I notice all states are listed under either 1 or 2 programs- except NJ. For NJ, you have to call an 800 number to see status of rules. ------------------ Ken K [This message has been edited by KenK (edited 03-25-2003).] IP: Logged |

In regard to the referral points...I had 3 different referrals buy. Marriott gave me such a hard time with the points being added to my account. Different excuses all around, but I hung in there and they finally came thru. It took almost 1 year though.IP: Logged |
