I own MBP with odd year usage. I just bought it a few months ago and was asked if I wanted usage to start 2005 or 2007. I said 2007 so the seller paid the maintanence fees for 2005 and 2006. I called Marriot and asked if since it is a lockoff that I split it and use the studio in 2006 and the 1 bedroom in 2007. They got II on the phone and said I could not start to use it until 2007. (could reserve though in 2006)Then after that I could split the unit and technically travel every year thereafter. So, here is my question: I talked to SFX and they said that with them since all fees have been paid (regardless of by who) I could travel in 2006 by requesting or depositing at least a 1 bedroom. So, do you think that sounds right and if so, why will II (or Marriot) not do that? thanks!!

II will do that, too. Here's how it works.

Since your first use is in 2007, you can call in 2006 - 12 months ahead of your 2007 planned check-in date - to make a reservation. Let's assume you call in January 2006 to make a reservation for sometime in January 2007.

Once you have the Marriott reservation confirmation number, you can deposit that week with II. In fact, Marriott will deposit your week for you at the same time you make your 2007 reservation, if you wish.

Once you have the week deposited with II, you can request an exchange for use any time from one year before the 2007 occupancy date until two years after that date. You can even, if you choose, request an exchange back into your home resort for a 2006 stay.

I'm guessing the apparent misunderstanding is that you were asking (or Marriott thought you were asking) if you could reserve a 2006 stay. No you can't. But you can try for an exchange, as discussed herein, through II (or SFX).

Okay, so, lets say I want to stay at resort A with my studio in 2006 and resort B with my 1 bedroom in 2007,(both not my home resorts) I call in 2006 and deposit my unit in March of 2006, pay to have it locked off, and then can travel according to my scenerio? If it does work like that, I may not have a great exchange since I will be depositing so close to traveling. Also, does that work with both request first and deposit first, and finally what should I do about exchange companies? Since SFX has the 2 resorts should I give them a try because they are free for "deposit first?" I guess I could try request first and use them both but that seems like spending money for no reason. Thanks so much!

Also, you mentioned in your last post that I could request an exchange back to my home resort in 2006. Does it have to be my home resort?

OK In Mar 2006, you reserve your unit for Mar 2007 and deposit one side (or both sides after locking off). You have now deposited one year before check-in, there-by getting for yourself the highest possible trading power for a Mar 2007 week. You may now exchange that week for any week for the next three years. (one year before checkin of the deposited unit, till two years after check in)

If you deposit (after lock off) both sides, you will have two units to exchange during that same three year period. The exchanges can be anywhere you want including your home resort.

FYI most marriott owners use II not SFX because of the 21 day marriott first rule. Where for the first 21 days after a Marriott is deposited only other marriott owners will be able to match for that unit. SFX is used if you want to exchange to a resort not associated with II like a Hilton TS.

Good Luck

PS your studio (and 1 bedroom) may be able to trade for something bigger than a studio (or one bedroom).

Bill and Dave M.,

Thank you both, I think I understand now. I actually have had a mental block where this subject has been concerned but I think I've got it now. Am I correct though to assume my 2006 exchange if I use it in 2006 could be tough because of timing?
(thanks for the advice on SFX, I forgot about that Marriot window).

The only thing tough about an exchange in 2006 will be many people want to plan their vacations early, so you might have a problem planning a summer 2006 vacation when the earliest you can start planning is Mar 2006. If you plan to vacation during the slower spring -fall season, you'll not have too many problems finding a good place to vacation.

Good Luck
