Does anyone know the current status of the renovations at Grande Ocean, and when they will be complete? I just confirmed an exchange and was wondering when the last building will be finished. I'd also be interested in knowing which buildings will be done last.Thank you! Steve IP: Logged |

I'm out of town at the moment and don't have access to my notes. However, the 10-year major refurbishings are being done on a rotational basis, essentially 10 years after a particular phase was built. Thus, the five buildings in the northern horseshoe have been completed. The last buuldings to be completed will be the ones that are the most southerly. I'm not sure whether the first few in the southern horseshoe were done this past winter or whether that will be next winter's project. IP: Logged |

DaveM we were in the Sea Horse building in Nov 2004 and it has not been renovated. The following buildings have been renovated as of November; the Royal Tern, Sand Piper, Pelican, and the Dolphin ask best as I can remember. IP: Logged |

We stayed at the Grande Ocean the first week of April and were in the Pelican building. They were still doing renovations in our building and the Dolphin building then. They were painting outside. As far as the inside goes, the furnishing and paint were in superb condition, but the carpeting could still use to be replaced. Don't know what all they were planning on doing yet or if the exterior painting was the last thing they were doing this year.IP: Logged |

When you call to check-in how early can you request what building you want? Or since it is a trade in for me when can I found out what building they are putting me in? We were there last year and the building they put us in was a disaster. It must have been at the 10 yr + need for renovations because it was a total mess. I don't want to have the same thing happen this year.------------------ Beth IP: Logged |

The 10-year renovations for all of the five northern buildings should now be complete. Dolphin, Pelican and Sandpiper were done about two years ago. The most recent ones were Royal Tern and Sea Horse. Sea Horse should have been completed this past winter. All of Sea Horse and half of Dolphin have only "Oceanfront" units, which likely wouldn't be available to exchangers. Thus, as an exchanger, trying to get into a building that has recently had a renovation, I would go for Royal Tern - which was completed a year ago. You can and should call about two weeks in advance to make your request. They normally won't tell you what building/unit you are in until you check in upon arrival.

Hi Dave,Thanks for the helpful information! Does anyone have a layout of the resort that they could post or email? That would be awesome. Steve IP: Logged |

I reviewed the resort in April and submitted a resort layout that is on the review page. I believe she put it on picture page 2.IP: Logged |

Wilma’s layout is the same one I use. Draw a straight line from left to right such that it goes midway through Dolphin, below Sea Horse and Sand Castle and midway through Starfish. Units above the line are “Oceanfront”. Those below the line are Oceanside, which is where exchangers normally stay. The Marketplace (sundries, deli and pizza) and the bike rental shop are in Sea Horse. Many people ride bikes on the hard-packed beach at low tide. There is an outdoor swim pool, a lap pool, a tot pool and a series of enclosed "lagoons" with heavy trees/shrubs inside the north U, significantly restricting views of the ocean from those units that are not close to the ocean. At the southern U, there are two swimming pools, a tot pool and the summer grill (open for lunch). There are fewer trees and high-growth shrubs inside this U. Parking is available for one car per unit on site. Most such parking is on the ground floor underneath each building. The units start on what would be the second floor. An additional car per unit can be parked in a lot across the street from the resort. There is a guardhouse at the entrance to the property, which is staffed 24 hours per day, at least during the summer and shoulder seasons. The beach is public, with public access via pathways on either side of the resort. The Hilton Head lifeguard service offers beach chairs (not the most comfortable), umbrellas and water toys for rental on a daily basis, with discounts for multiple-day rentals. Abundant shopping and numerous restaurants are at Coligny Plaza and along Pope Avenue, less than a mile away.
