I am catching up on my timeshare education. I haven't spent much time on these boards in the last two or three years and have missed most of the weeks vs. points debates until lately. I see a lot of discussion about the benefit of 45 day window 9000 point weeks, but I don't get it. If you have to pay a hefty exchange fee to get your 9000 point week, and the same week can be had on "last call" extra vacations through the weeks system at $99 - 149 for the week with no exchange fee at all, how is the 9000 point week a good deal? Sorry if I am being dense.

I'm not sure you can get the same weeks for $99 - $149. What you might want to do is have someone with points do a search for what you want, then check the bonus vacations to see.

Kay-

In general the 9000 point weeks are not available on the Extra Vacations list. When they also show up on that list, in my experience they have been listed at a higher price than the real cheapie weeks and in any case more than my cost of points + exchange fees. Remember that these are basically the same weeks that one would find searching within weeks, but within the 45 day window. I have looked to see what is avaliable out of curiosity, but unfortunatly can't take advantage of them due to my husband's rigid work schedule that requires him to schedule all his vacation a year in advance.

Searching for Williamsburg for a 4/1 checkin, I could do an 8500 point week for the $149 exchange fee or I could do an extra vacation for $199. Same resort and size unit. Sometimes they are available in both.

You just have to see what's out there and make a decision. In this case, I would have used the Points because I have a few that I need to use up this year. As it turned out, I was able to rent (since I really only needed two nights) for just over the exchange fee, so I went that route.

My impression is that the 9000 point weeks are often available for $250-$280 through other routes (such as SkyAuction or RCI Weeks extra vacations.) I imagine these units are sometimes available for less than $250 through RCI Weeks, but not often. (RCI Weeks just doesn't list that much for under $250.) So, if one has a low per-point cost, then one can save a little by getting a 9000 point week in RCI Points rather than going through one of the other routes.

Are there any weeks that are available for 9000 points, that are not also available via SkyAuction or as RCI Weeks extra vacations? I'm not sure. The one time I looked closely at the 9000 point weeks, I couldn't find any.

I know a lot of people here have said that they joined RCI Points specifically for the 9000 point weeks, but I really think that isn't worth it. I was very disapointed when I saw how few units RCI Points offers for 9000 points. Too bad there is no way to check their inventory before becoming a Points member!

Why not have trade tests before buying from a developer ?

I'm not sure what you mean, David. If you mean I should have asked the resort to do a trade test, that wouldn't have worked. I don't think the resort that sold me the points had the first idea how to *use* them. As for getting information here on TUG, well, I did -- but found after I bought Points that the 9000 points inventory was far smaller than posts here had led me to expect.

Have you checked out RCI's new "Last Call" Category? Everything listed there is $99 studio, $149 1-BR, $199 2-BR, for availability within 45-day window. Don't know how long this will last, but it's easy to search.

Edited to add: Oh, now I see this has already been discussed above. Never mind!

It was a general statement, for those who bought 1 bd off white units on the promise that they would trade for anything in the book.

You need to assume you will need enough points to reserve what you want, not hope what you want goes unclaimed and is available at a bargain price. It might happen but you cannot count on it.
