Many Japanese get confused about tipping until they get used to it. That is natural but I found even Americans have different opinions about tipping for housekeeping when staying at a hotel. So here are my questions...

Q1. Do you leave tips on your bed every morning?
Q2. If you do not leave anything, what is the reason?
If you leave something,
Q3. How much do you leave for a single hotel room?
Q4. How much do you leave for one bed suite room?
Q5. What is "your" general guidelines on tipping for room clean-up?

I usually leave two dollar a day when I stay at a single hotel room. When staying at a larger unit like a one bed room, I will leave up to five dollars depending upon how messy the room is. Once I left $10 under the pillow, every towel was clean and fresh, not so much used.

I usually leave $3 on the dresser in a hotel room. If I want extra towels, tissues or anything I leave a note next to the tip and always receive what I want. In a timeshare I leave $5/day for daily maid service or $10 at the end of a week if only cleaned then.

My tip for housekeeping is to dust only when you can write your name on the coffee table. Life is too short.

I have never left a tip for housekeeping in a hotel and have never thought I should.

It is getting interesting.

Present,

Please let me ask you some questions. Do you mean, just before check-out, you will leave, for example, $42 after 3 people have stayed 7 nights in a suite? Do you assume the one and same person has taken care of your room?

$1 per per person per day tip to housekeeping left on the Pillow when staying at a Hotel has been the general Norm you find in most tipping guidelines.
This should be increased for larger suites and upscale resorts.
If your going to TIP you should try and do so daily as the Maids often change.

For a recent 4 day stay in NYC, we left our housekeeper (yes, same one each day because I saw her each day) a 10.00 tip and a 10.00 MetroCard on the last day of our stay. We also wrote some nice things about her on our comment card. This was at a Courtyard in Upper East midtown. Since the tube was just a few steps from the hotel, we knew she used it.

Normally, I only tip out if we receive extraordinary service, which we did on this stay, and am more inclined to if I interact with staff, as we also did on this stay. I don't mean asking for more towels, but rather conversing about other things.

My wife works in a service industry (hair stylist) and has taught me much about tipping. Hair stylists get tipped (and tip out) very well, generally. I was always a cheapskate, since my customers only want discounts and I'm lucky if they pay their bill on time , but I digress...

IMO, tipping is very individual and it's not my place to pass judgement...
