Its the humidity Or that's what they say. The high today in Las Vegas was 103ş. The humidity was 4%. Right now (7:20PM) its 99ş with 5% humidity. The low, which is expected to be about 77ş won't be reached till about 5Am tomorrow. It will probably be in the mid-80's at midnight. So just a reminder. If you are planning on a Vegas vacation this summer, remember to drink plenty of water once you are here. Coffee and cola don't count. You need to keep hydrated. I even take a bottle of water when I go to get my mail, and that's about 2 miles. I drank the whole thing yesterday before I got back home! My the time you realize you need the water, you've already begun dehydrating. You don't perspire as much in low humidity, so its easy to forget to drink and get heat stroke, too. Take care of yourself! Fern ------------------ Fern Modena İMy words are my own, please don't use them without my permission. IP: Logged |

We used to enjoy impressing people with the weather statistics in our Christmas letter each year. They've sort of blurred in my mind. I remember that one year we had more than 100 consecutive days of 90 degrees or higher -- or was it 90 days in a row of 100 or higher?Visitors really suffer but residents eventually get used to the dryness. Phoenix was worse. ps -- Fern, why is your mail 2 miles away? ------------------ Mary IP: Logged |

Overall, what pros and cons are there to where you are now, compared to where you were? And...do you miss the closness of the city?------------------ Robert IP: Logged |

Anne and Robert--No regrets at all. We love it here. The heat isn't much more than we had in Antioch, and we like heat anyway. As for missing the closeness of the city, we virtually never went into San Francisco because traffic was so bad (it took 2 hours to go about 66 miles, if we were fairly lucky). Here we're in Henderson, which has virtually everything you need, doctors, a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, theaters, etc. And when we want it, the Las Vegas Strip is about 14 miles away. We go to shows about every month or two, eat out somewhere on the Strip when we visit friends in town, etc.Robert, you asked pros and cons. Cons to Antioch were the horrid traffic and the fact that Applebee's was fine dining. Culture was something you found in yogurt. Pro was the grandkids were within 2 hours drive. The main con here is the grandkids. We don't see them very often. The pros are many. We live in a wonderful community, populated with great people and lots of things to do and be a part of. We have just about everything we need within an easy drive. For example, we needed a vacuum part. The Hoover store is about 3 miles away. As far as I know, there wasn't one in Eastern Contra Costa. Almost all of our doctors are within 5 miles. With Kaiser, some of them (the specialists) were over an hour's drive away in Walnut Creek. Here they are all local. I had three supermarkets in five miles in Antioch. Here I have eight...two ALbertson's (with fresh meat and fish counters), two Smiths, a Von's, a Walmart Neighborhood Store, a Super K-Mart and a Super Walmart. We also have two prime Meat Markets. We're both much more active in our community than we ever were in Antioch. I didn't do much of anything after I retired, even though I intended to. Now I am active in the Women's Club, Community Service Club, Welcome Ladies Club, Computer Club, Pinnacle (Neighborhood) Club, International Culture Club, the Lifelong Learning Club, and more. Jerry is very active, too, in the Community Service Club, Lifelong Learning Club, Security Patrol, and Bocce League. We also have how-to fairs here, plays and other activities, and "field trips." Mary, We do have a "pod" mailbox at the corner. However, we only get ads there. We choose to get our mail at a UPS Store. We started that when we were in "transition mode," living at the apartment before the house was built. It worked out so good we decided to keep our mail that way. They automatically hold when we go on vacation (and we don't have to wait in a humungous line to collect mail later). They accept all my packages for me (UPS, Post Office, Fed-Ex, etc), so I don't have to chase them down. That's a big plus, too. And we both get prescriptions by mail. Our mail at the "pod" comes at around 4PM. I'd hate to miss my prescriptions and have them sit out in the sun for a whole day. The UPS store is near my most-used supermarket, and on the way home from everywhere, so its not a problem. Oh, good. I was appalled at the thought that the new communities weren't giving anyone street mailboxes anymore. Our pod was across the street and one house over. With 3 small children, 2 miles away would have been a big hassle. ------------------ Mary IP: Logged |

Our mail pod is about five houses over. Its on our side of the street since we have the sidewalk (sidewalks only on one side of the street here). The pod is for 16 houses and has two package boxes. If you receive a package, you'll find the package box key in your pod box. They don't home deliver *anything*.Fern ------------------ Fern Modena İMy words are my own, please don't use them without my permission. IP: Logged |

Fern, I'm curious how long ago you moved from Antioch. We moved from Pleasant Hill 6 years ago, and Antioch was quite a growing area. I thought they had everything! I'm surprised there isn't a Kaiser there at the very least. We're enjoying the same heat here in AZ. It's darn hot, but it's better than the alternative as far as I'm concerned.------------------ Kepi IP: Logged |

Kepi, We moved a year and a half ago. Yes, Antioch was growing. That was part of the problem. We lived in Southeast Antioch. Population was booming, but there was no road improvements. Highway 4 was, and remains a nightmare east of Pittsburg. Average time to get from Bailey Road or Railroad to SE Antioch (11 miles) was 60 minutes. Kaiser had an overburdened medical clinic at Somersville & Delta Fair. You had to go to Walnut Creek for many of the specialists and for the hospital. They opened the "new clinic" on Deer Valley shortly before we moved. ALl that was there was Adult and Pedi Medicine, a lab, x-ray, and a pharmacy. Everything else was still in Walnut Creek, an hour and a half away. Things are a lot more convenient here, and the weather is not that different. The heat here in Las Vegas is GREAT!!As I type this, I'm sitting at Gordon Biersch in the D concourse at McCarran. I took a bump off my Alaska Airlines flight - because of the heat, they couldn't take off with a full load of passengers. An Alaska Airlines bump is good for a free ticket anywhere they fly without blackout. The flight I was rebooked on is also full - I've got a decent shot at a second bump later tonight. Looks like Puerto Vallarta next February for us - thanks to the Las Vegas heat. (BTW - I spent all yesterday afternoon doing field work at Indian Springs. I'll take the dry heat over the summer I spent in Missouri doing construction inspection anytime.) ------------------ Steve Nelson IP: Logged |

Steve, didn't you love it when you went out in the mornings to go to work at 6:00 AM and the temperature was 80 and the humidity was 95%. The Mississippi Valley in Southeast Missouri is great in the summer time!IP: Logged |

Here at 6AM the temp is in the low to mid 70's (its our coolest time of day), and the humidity is in the single digits (7-9%) in the summer "Its a dry heat." Its 9PM, 90ş, 12% humidity. I remember swatting at mosquitoes and flies - and realizing that the added discomfort of the heat and sweat from shooing the bugs was as bad as just letting them swarm. ------------------ Steve Nelson IP: Logged |

The bump is a great perk, but Steve, you're sitting in a rotten airport missing a perfect 82-degree day in awesome Seattle :-)

FYI...In Phoenix, those car temp read outs are usually 5-10 degrees off (too high)....Once the outside temp breaks 100 they are very inaccurate. Fern..Glad to see you are enjoying Nv. ....Once you've lived in the Sw and experienced the weather, its hard to imagine living anywhere else. Today the weatherman said that we've broken the record for the most consecutive days over 100ş in May. The new record is eight days. Normally the first 100ş day is May 24th. This year it was May 20th. Its suppose to cool down from here to the end of next week. Cool being in the 90's.
