Hi:My concrete porch with a decorative Slate surface needs work, and I'll be doing it myself. I'm at the point where I'm trying to decide on the look...in other words whether to have an all concrete surface, replace the slates in some sort of either geometric or freeform pattern, on possibly even go with tiles. In that regard My question is, has anybody had experience with Tiles in an outdoor application. Were I to go with tiles, they'd need to be able to handle temps to 100 degrees, average to moderate annual rainfall, and ice and snow and snow shoveling. Can tiles and the grout take this type of punishment? I'd hate to bust my butt (and not be timesharing) only to have a job that starts to crumble in 3-years or so... If anybody has any opinions, or suggestions related to a tiled porch, I'd appreciate hearing back. Were I to actually go forward with tiles, I'm talking about the larger 12 to 18 inch sizes if that helps... Thanks Bob ------------------ I put the 'n' in Ordinary... IP: Logged |

When we moved into our new home, we wanted to tile the patio, but when the estimator came to give us a price, he pretty much discouraged us. Our patio is in 4 cement sections, to accomodate some ground shifting. He explained that with it tiled, any ground shifting would crack the tiles. Also, he pointed out that, for protection, we'd need glazed tiles, and they tend to be very slippery when wet. We decided that discretion was the greater part of valor, and settled for Home Depot's garage floor colored sealer, with color chips. I must admit, however, that is all still sitting in the garage. Too many potted plants to be moved now, so there went our incentive. Good luck with whatever you decide.------------------ Jean IP: Logged |
