Same here, in NJ, and this is just a new service offered here since September 2004. Before that, we had to go to the count seat. We took advantage of the new service, including pictures, in Ocober and had our passports in two weeks. IP: Logged |

Make sure to get your passport renewed early. If it is less than 6 months before expiration, some countries will not let you enter.IP: Logged |

Just went for our passports for our family of 5 yesterday at our County Clerk's office. I downloaded the forms from the State Dept. website ahead of time and filled them out beforehand. Many others there waited on line to get the forms, then had to get back on line to give them in- ugh. I was glad we had them already. Oh, and they were having a special-- kids' passport pictures are free in the month of December. That saved us $21. They told us to expect them in 5-6 weeks at the most, but that we would probably get them in 4.------------------ ~Arlene IP: Logged |

However - if someone is under the age of 16 when they apply, their passport will only be valid for 5 years.------------------ Kay H Ten years. Mine was due to expire Jan 05 and I renewed it in Nov 04. Easy to do if it has not already expired. --------------------------- Originally posted by Martin: So how long is a passport good for? ------------------------

Re: AAA free passport photos - they are free (one set) only if you are a AAA Plus member. If you need another set I think it is $10.00 Just an FYI, you can also get an international driver's license at AAA - right on the spot. You need 2 photos, your US driver's license and they fill it out for you right then and there. It was recommended to us just to have since some countries may not accept a US license, also can work as a temporary back up ID if your passport is lost or stolen (key then would be to keep them in seperate spots!!!).IP: Logged |

Great post. I have never applied for a passport before and didn't have the first clue where to start. We are going to Mexico in November. Thanks for the links and past experiences. I am surprised at the cost especially when I will have to drop $380 for my wife, 3 children, and myself to get our first passports. Pretty steep if you ask me. Maybe I will try and take my own photos so the cost doesn't go over $400. Although, I am looking forward to PV, Mexico in November. Thanks again, Ted IP: Logged |

Silverfox, I too live on Long Island (Saint James) and for the taxes we pay they SHOULD give us something for free!!!!! Everyone in the government here has their hand in my pocket. IP: Logged |

American citizens can still travel to the border countries of Mexico and Canada without a passport. http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1229.html#m Unless you’re planning to travel further than that, you can save your money and get through customs with a certified, government-issued birth certificate and DL or photo ID. It seems to take the custom agents longer to go over this type of documentation rather than a passport – but it would be a lot less expensive for you!

Give yourself plenty of time. I sent in my birth certificate to find out it was not an original. It had a seal but not an embossed seal, just a sticker. I had to apply to my birth state for a new one and send that in. After all that my travel plans changed and I have not been able to use it! I also used AAA but have just the regular membership. They let me look at the picture before they made it permanent. ------------------ Brenda Planning is half the fun! IP: Logged |
