I recently had to renew my passport. I was bummed. Not only was I 10 years older, but I had taken the previous photo right after being best man for a wedding. That photo looked really good with me wearing a white tux and bow tie. I had the new photo taken at AAA. Not only was it all washed out, but the person in it also looked 10 years older! IP: Logged |

FWIW - I have a travel case that always goes with me when I travel. It has a convenient pocket in the front for a passport; it's easier to get to that pocket than to fish my wallet out of my pants pocket. So I keep my passport in that pocket on the case, and always use my passport as my ID when checking baggage and going through security. I'm surprised by the number of people who assume I must be on one leg of an international flight just because I use my passport for ID instead of my DL. ------------------ Steve Nelson My Seattle Mariners blog ** I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. We recently renewed our passports. Hubby got new one and mine got rejected because they couldn't see my eyes in the photo. (I wear tinted glasses.) Had to retake, and repay, for another photo. My eyes are huge in it, but I didn't want to be rejected again. My family got a big laugh out of this.Nancy IP: Logged |

Had a GREAT passport photo, and my passport was stolen! My current passport photo was taken 8 years ago while pregnant with one of my boys. I look hyper-inflated. Boy, I can't wait until that puppy expires so I can get a new photo! Here's a driver's license photo story......last time I had my photo taken, I got all dolled up, DETERMINED to have a good DL photo. Hair, make-up, cute top, practiced my smile in front of the mirror.....the works! So I went and took it and was thrilled and then waited eagerly in the mail. When my new DL arrived I ripped open the envelope eagerly and.....GASP!....it was the WORST ever! Eyes half-closed and rolling to the side, my hair looked AWFUL, it even looked like I had scraggly 5 o'clock shadow. I LOOKED LIKE A MAN! Wait, I was a man...well, not me, but the photo was of a man and not me at all. A man with scraggly hair and a dirty old army jacket! So I marched to the Secretary of State's office and showed them and they said "Oh, here you are, HE came in an hour ago with YOUR picture on HIS DL....and your picture sure looked great!" So I had to have a new photo taken right there and then.....with rained on hair and no makeup and all crazy-eyed. You can even see formula spit-up on my blouse. Nice. So I'm just waiting for my renewal notice to come in.....any year now! IP: Logged |

I took my own photos last renewal, printed them on my dye-sub printer, trimmed them and sent them in. I look exactly like they want us to look now, like a prisoner As long as you follow the photo guidelines, they don't care where the pix come from. And, seriously, don't smile anymore (if you ever did). There's rules now about how much tooth can show... Pat

How's this for your government at work. We live on Long Island and our local township (town of hempstead) now takes passport applications, takes your photo and submits everything to the feds, my wifes renewal came in 2 weeks all at no additional fee above the regular passport fees. Nice touch from the gov for a change------------------

I have kind of a personal question. Can an ex-Federal inmate get a passport? IP: Logged |

Not speaking from any knowledge here, but I would outraged if the answer is no. If you are a citizen, you should be entitled to a passport. Of course, if there is a reason why you are not allowed to leave the country, (on parole, etc.), I can see why they might temporarily "hold" your passport for you. Now other countries might deny such a person entry, I suppose that's their right, but I don't think the U.S. government should deny someone a passport because of past transgressions. Of course, this is JMHO. Anybody know the real answer?? Edited to add: looking at my passport application, it asks if you have ever renounced your citizenship or served in a foreign army, also asks if you've been convicted of treason or of plotting to overthrow the government. So I guess it matters of what the person was convicted. ------------------ ~Arlene [This message has been edited by arlene22 (edited 12-17-2004).] IP: Logged |

Of the Post Offices that do have passport services, some of them require an appointment, and some of them you can just walk-up and get the passport application started. When you call the post office, make sure you find out WHAT TIME OF DAY they stop taking passport applications. The last hour of the day at the post office is very busy, since many people getting off work do business at the post office between 430-530pm. Therefore, the post office usually shuts down its passport services 30 minutes to one hour before their closing time. I know the Post Office has gone to a centralized 1-800-275-8777 number for most general requests, so if the automated answering system doesn't give you the specific information you need, stay on the line and ask for a Customer Service Rep. to get your passport hours questions answered. If the photos meet the published guidelines, they're acceptable. See my post earlier in this thread. They can be color or black and white AFAIK. The State Department website has the details. Pat IP: Logged |

There is a company called Travisa in DC that can provide travel documents on short notice. Their website: http://www.travisa.com/ gives all the info needed for entry into many foreign countries and they can Fed-Ex your documents if you need them in a hurry. IP: Logged |

Ten years. Mine was due to expire Jan 05 and I renewed it in Nov 04. Easy to do if it has not already expired. quote: Originally posted by Martin: So how long is a passport good for?
