Now I feel like a real dummy. My husband talked me into discontinuing use of my CitiBank AA Visa (which I LOVED) and asked me to start using his Capital One Visa to accumulate airline miles to anywhere. Now I realize that I really have no idea how the program works and if I'm getting a good deal or not. The website doesn't really give you redemption details because you have to either book your ticket and charge it before you find out what you're entitled to or call their Travel Support who will book the travel for you.

Is there any way to know how many miles I need to book a $750 ticket to Puerto Vallarta without actually purchasing the ticket?

TIA,
diane

I thought I saw the rememption rates on their site a year or so ago... I did a search, and found this link:
http://apply2.capitalone.com/8463/8-767/index.jsp?s=08463008767XXCO31XXGOMLSPXXXXX&referrerURL=http://www.capitalone.com/creditcards/compare.php?linkid=WWW_Z_Z_01_CB1_C2_01_G_CCOMP

From at least those three example (all low end), looks like 8000 miles gets you $100 credit. In your case, you'd be looking at worst case 60000 miles/points (perhaps less if they have a sliding scale, less points for a larger redemption).

Card has it's pluses and minuses compared to airline affinity cards. A plus is that you have guaranteed redemption - whatever flight you can find ticket availability for (at whatever price), you can use your points towards. It also means if you get a sale fare, your points go further.

A minus is the potentially poor redemption value. 35k miles on most airlines will get you from the East Coast to Hawaii. 35k points with Cap/One only gets you $437 worth of 'credit' with them, rarely enough to get to a ticket to Hawaii. My FF award tickets to Hawaii have always had an effective redemption value of at least 2 cents/mile (one trip was over 3c/m), whereas Cap/One only gets you 0.8c/m.

Thanks, Jeff. I searched the site myself trying to find just such examples and I was not successful. Thanks for locating it for me.

As I suspected, to make sure you're going to get what you want, it's probably better to accumulate Capital One miles. But my AA affinity card will get me a flight with fewer miles -- if I can get the limited FF seats available. The other advantage to AA miles is the ability to use for upgrades which, as I understand it, you can't do with Capital One --you need to purchase the business class/first class ticket at the much higher rate. And, as I understand it, Capital One will only let you purchase non-refundable tickets to limit your flexibility to make changes.

Looks like there are good reasons to have both -- and to make every single purchase via credit card if you really want to ever fly free.

About a year ago Capital One changed their redemption structure significantly to what you see now.
If you had an account prior to that time and explicitly opted out of the new program then you could stay on the old one.

The catch here is that they didn't make it very clear how, or even that you could opt out of the new program. But I did.

So on my Capital One account I can get a Mexico/Caribbean ticket (with a max value of ~$700 I think) for 35k points. Any cost over the max I just pay out of pocket.

Perdonally, I've found Capital One to be a less than honorable company to deal with.

Several years ago, they sent one of those guarenteed issue applications to an address that I hadn't lived at in several years. The individual there applied for, and received, a Captial One card with a very low limit of $500. He provided an incorrect SS#, place of employeement et..... Yet Capital One issued the card and submitted all of the inacurrate information to the credit reporting agencies, who in turn added it to my credit reports.

I found out about it through a routine check of my credit files. When I called the credit agencies, they said Capital One had to resolve the matter. That's were the fun started.

First, they refused to give me any information over the phone because I couldn't prove who I was but, they demanded payment. After a several choice words and a couple of threats, they actually looked at the file and said whoops, maybe we made a mistake. Well correct it.

About a week later, my credit file had been corrected. Another week after that and Capital One put the same information BACK onto my file. Apparently they didn't think I'd check again. The next threat to them was rather specific and carried a monetary value for reporting obviosely false information to a credit bureau since they had already corrected it once (I kept the coppies). It was fixed permanently and the bad information was removed from my credit files.

This has been several years ago and I still check my file every couple of months for fraud. The Capital One account still shows up, it just reports as paid in full and as agreed to.

Several years later, I decided I'd take them up on one of their offers. No where in the literature could I find an annual fee of $59. This time they issued me a card with a $100 credit limit on it and tried to charge me $59 for the priveledge. I cancelled the card immediately and that's were the fun started. They insisted that I pay an annual fee that was not listed on their application (I kept the app and asked if they like it faxed to them). Eventually they agreed to cancel the card and reverse the fee. I still have a late payment mark for that card on my credit files but it shows closed by consumer, account paid as agreed.

IMO, these guys are just snakes in the grass. Their customer service amounts to a boiler room collection agency operation and they are not to be trusted.

We also had an interesting time when we first got the card. We used it for some small purchases (because I still refused to give up my AA Citibank card) but after 2 months my husband called them because we never got a bill. Not only did they tell us they had sent the bill, but their finance charges and penalty almost exceeded the amount owed. We paid it, got it straightened out and they removed the finance and penalty charges. The next month the same thing happened. Finally, my husband started paying the bill before it arrived by going to the website and determining our charges less any finance fees. It took about 5 months before we started getting bills on a reliable basis. The same thing happened to friends of ours. Now that I'm finally learning how bad their air miles program really is, we're switching to a Citi Premier Pass Elite Level card. There's a $75/yr. charge but all purchases have $1=1 purchase point. Purchases for gas, groceries and transportation services (parking, etc.) yield $1=2 purchase points. All airline distances count toward flight points AND you can still accumulate airline FF miles in addition. If you purchase tickets for family or friends with the card, the distance value of their flights can also be added to your flight points. First purchase with the card adds 15K points to your account. I'm still checking out the fine print, but so far this looks like a great deal for people who travel requently and worth the $75/year fee.

I've never had a problem with Capital One, but everyone has a different set of experiences in life. As to the original question, the best way to get the information is to call their 800 number (1-800-638-0492) and ask any specific questions you may have. They have always been very helpful to me. I'll be using those miles for a trip to Montana this summer. [edited to correct my bozo spelling errors...hope I didn't miss any!]

I didn't know about "opting out" of the new way of purchasing tickets! And, I don't know how to calculate what is the best card. However, I have used Capitol One as my main card and am happy--even with the newer reimbursement (probably is less generous). I like shopping for bargain tickets, then use my miles to reimburse me. I have it all set up on-line, and no problems. So, let's say I found a ticket for $250 for an airline trip--it takes 20,000 miles (250 x 80), so I purchase the ticket and then ask for reimbursement for the $250 from Capitol One, and it shows up as a credit on my statement.
I never liked having to pay the price they showed for tickets when I wanted to buy another--ie. using Capitol One miles for a ticket, then trying to get others for the rest of the family. This way I shop for what I want, and can still use their miles. I pay a $19/yr. fee for this...and get aobut $500 back, so I'm happy.

My plan is the same as lyoder. It's called GoMiles now, and I am very happy with it because it lets me shop for the cheapest ticket on any airline and then get a credit. I've always found that if I shop, I can get the ticket cheap enough that my miles are more cost effective than other plans where I have to give up x points for crossing two regions or some such formula.

Yup, capital one seems to be more marketing....my sister in law had a tough time trying to use her FF mileage. I toss all their offers in the trash! Seems like I get one every week!
