Hi - My nephew is coming to visit for a few days and we plan to drive to Philadelphia (from Hanover)for a long day of sightseeing. It is about a 2-2 1/2 hour drive so we will leave fairly early. I thought we could park and take the trolley sightseeing tour so we could get off and on.... Any ideas where to park? Philly Art Museum where we will go for sure anyway? Parking garage? We will no doubt want to get a Philly cheese steak before our drive home - Which one is best - Pat's or the one next to it (forgot the name)? Thanks!!------------------ sara IP: Logged |

I live about 30 minutes outside Philadelphia in Levittown PA. Personally, I would never drive into Philadelphia. I take the train in and buy an all-day bus pass to get around. If a train is out of the question, then I guess Penn's Landing would be as good a place as any to park. It is next to I-95 and in the heart of everything. Penn's Landing is on the Delaware River a few blocks from the Historic District. No matter where you drive in Philadelphia, be prepared for major traffic. If you could swing an overnight stay, that would probably be the best scenario. Geno's is the other cheese steak place. If you want to start an argument just try to ask which is best. Find a Septa visitors map for places to see. Usually found at most novelty stores or Septa Information booths. Jack ------------------ Spam is a severe and chronic problem for me. Philly is one of the most beautiful cities on the East Coast. The people are warm and friendly, the city is easily traveled and the sites are second to none. There is no problem driving in Philly. Are the rush hours and occasional traffic jams, of course. The city itself is laid out on a simple grid makinf driving simplistic. East to west the streets are numbered and north to south they are named(downtown where you will be they are named for trees)The exception is Broad St. which is 14th St. The streets are often one way and the street parallel to you will always go the other way. There are a few streets that run diagonal but very few.Drive into the historical section of Philly or downtown Philly. There are more parking lots there then around the art museum. If you plan to tour by bus, I would recommend the lot opposite the Marriot at 13th and Filbert. A trolley tour bus has a stop at that corner. It is one of the on and off buses to allow you to visit as long as you want. The stop is the Reading Terminal stop which is one of the few original market places left in this country and a must for lunch(you can even get decent cheesesteaks there) As to Pat's vs. Gino's, I'm a Gino's man (the place in the terminal is Pat's grandson) If you need any info feel free to email me. I love my home city and would be pleased to help IP: Logged |

225chsPhiladelphia is a great place to visit, but I'm sure you are used to driving in the City. I am from the view of someone who seldom drives into town and thus it can be daunting. I have driven in the middle of a week day and also on weekends, and unless you are very familiar with the City you can get very frustrated. I still prefer to use public transportation whenever I go. Perhaps you can give us some pointers on sites other than the obvious places to visit. Jack ------------------ Spam is a severe and chronic problem for me. I need to take drastic steps. Check out the Philly Phlash for cheap, easy transportation around the city. It goes to all the historic/sites of intererst. www.gophila.com/phlash. And Geno's is definitely the best! IP: Logged |

Sara: At Penn's Landing you can catch a ferry and go across the river to the New Jersey State Aquarium. The Seaport Museum is also at Penn's Landing. South Street has a lot of interesting shops and sights to see and it's close. IP: Logged |

JackWhat are you interested in. Historical, fine arts, museums, strange but true etc, Also for children, young adult etc. Be glad to recommend if I can. By the way, the flash is a great alternative to the trolley. Also located across from the parking I mentioned. A caveat-- parking is expensive in a lot probably @$20 for the day IP: Logged |

Thanks for all the information. The Phlash sounds good I looked at the route but can't tell whether it goes to where PAt and Geno's are located....I guess we could drive over there or get the cheesesteak in the Reading Terminal.

saraphlash will not take you to Pat's. Pat's is in South Phila. It's a long walk or car. However in addition to the terminal, if you exit Phlash at 3rd and Market, walk south for about six blocks to 4th and South, Jim's Steaks is excellent also. And afterall South Street is an experience unto itself ("where do all the hippies meet") IP: Logged |

Born and raised in Philly and I'm voting for Jim's Steaks too! Great steaks and easily accessible. Don't forgot to do the "Philly Lean" if you are eating your steak standing up...you wouldn't want to drip on your shoes! Beth IP: Logged |
