My son bought two tickets to Maui but now his wife can't go and he wants to take his 8 yr old son. Any suggestions on the best way to go about this? Hope to avoid costly process if possible. Thank you in advance

You cant change the name on a ticket. If the ticket bought was refundable then of course just cancel the ticket and buy a new one. However, it is unlikely that it is refundable as most people choose the less expensive non-refundable fares. I know I always do.

If it is a non-refundable ticket the only thing you can do is to cancel the ticket and purchase a new one. You usually will have one year to use the ticket you cancelled.

No airline will allow you to change the name on a ticket.

This is correct. Husband tried to do it for a ticket his small company purchased when one employee couldn't travel, but airline would not change it.

Sorry but I have to disagree. My airline allows a name change for a $30 fee.I's suggest that you read the fine print or call the airline and inquire about their rules .While most airlines do not allow it ,you never know if yours does.

Since an 8 year old doesn't need ID unless it's an international flight, why not just use your tickets as is?

What airline is it that lets you change the name?

I remember years ago you used to be able to change the name on a ticket (for a fee). We used to buy tickets to Hawaii and then change the name when we knew who was going with us (in our case an aupair usually went). One time we fired the aupair who had been planning on going and I needed to change the name. This was after the policy changed and no name changes were allowed. I was finally allowed to change the name on the ticket after much pleading and begging. My rationale was that I was the one who had paid for the ticket, NOT the aupair. What they wanted to do was to refund the ticket to her. This was with United, but my guess is I wouldn't be allowed to do this now.

Gmarine, I knew you'd ask, lol.

My airline is USA3000. I have two friends traveling with me to Cancun who one wants to return on Sat and the other wants to return on Sunday. Unfortunately the one who wants to return on Sat purchased the last ticket for the Sunday return and the other got stuck buying a Sat. Ticket instead of the Sun. Now, If they want to change them then they can just change their names for a $50 fee(my mistake it isn't $30).

Quoted from their website:

""ALL USA3000 AIRLINES TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. Fares shown do not include Airport Passenger Facility Charges (PFC) of up to $9; the September 11th security fee of up to $5 is not included. Fares do not include segment taxes up to $3.20 per segment. (A segment is defined as a takeoff and a landing). International fares do not include US International Departure and Arrival Fees, US Customs and Immigration, Agriculture and Foreign government taxes. Name changes are allowed for a $50 per person fee. You must be over the age of 18 years to purchase tickets online. When making reservations for unaccompanied minors or someone requiring special assistance (wheelchair, travel with pets, etc.) complete purchase and call the reservations center at 1-877-872-3000 ""

I've never been able to change a name on a ticket but I do admit to letting a child use my husband's unused ticket a couple of years ago. To cancel and rebook on the same flight would have cost a fortune because the flight was now full. The child did not need ID but had to pretend to be the adult. This is not always easy for a child. In the OP's case, a 8 year old boy might have a problem using a ticket in his mother's name.

You are right. When I said that no airlines allow name changes I didnt take into consideration an airline that operates as a public charter. I should have said that no major airlines allow name changes but charters may.

As you probably know USA 3000 operates mainly charter flights in a partnership with Apple Vacations.

Charter flights are typically less expensive but you should make sure you are aware of the consumer provisions afforded you by the carrier. They are typically different from flying on a regularly scheduled flight.

Among the differences, there are several, are that the airline or tour operater(Apple) can cancel a charter for any reason until 10 days prior to departure. This happens most of the time when the flight does not sell enough seats to warrant the trip.

Of course you get your money back but it doesnt compensate you for the inconvenience of your trip being cancelled at the last minute.

Ok, I am not flying through Apple Vacations . I booked directly through the airline and I just called to inquire about your info. The gentleman told me that the only thing they cancel their flights for is if the plane can not fly or some other emergency.

Either way, my flights are sold out . So no worries.

I said mainly they charter with Apple I didnt say they only sell seats to Apple.

I didnt say they will cancel the flight. I said they can, which no matter what the man said, is true.

I am not trying to say you chose a bad airline. What I am saying is that charter flights, and USA300 is a public charter, have different rules than regularly scheduled airlines. When you booked your flight you should have received info from USA3000 explaining this.

The biggest difference is if your luggage gets lost. The rules regarding this are not the same. Here is some info. http://www.travelsense.org/tips/charterflights.asp

Have a safe trip.

Ok, I know you never said I purchased with Apple or they will cancel my flight. Or that they work only through Apple . I know you wrote that it was a public charter the first time. I happen to not like Apple so I just clarified that I didn't purchase with them. I called to verify what you said about them canceling flights if it is undersold because if that is the case I would like to know. As for what they sent me, I didn't get anything aside from my flight info and my payment and cancellation restrictions.

Since I am not traveling with a tour operator, the airline is responsible for my lost luggage. I have insurance either way. I am now in the 10 day window where they can't cancel my flight unless it has physical problems.

Now if that happenes, I have trip insurance and can jump on another flight and have it covered. My friends however are dragging their feet to the insurance line. I hope I ewont have to tell them I told you so.

Thanks for the sight and well wishes.

A question I have on this...........the ticket was for the wife and now he wants to take his son. I know they won't ask for ID for the child, but do you think someone might wonder about the name? Unless of course the wife has a name that might be unisex.

Just hope the wife has a sex generic name as the 8 year old is a little boy...who probably will not be taken as "Mary".

8 year olds can look pretty androgynous with t-shirts and jeans. Let his hair grow a bit and hope the ticket agent is tactful or is too embarrassed to question his gender. The bigger challenge will be to get your son to go along.

Is this starting to smack of getting your kid to lie so you can save a few bucks? And yes, I realize in this case it would be more than just a few.

Yes, it is definitely walking a thin line. The time I did it my son's 13yo friend used my husband's ticket. He knew the plan but I also tried my best to keep him from having to talk to the anyone at checkin/security.

I guess the OP can decide for themselves if they're willing to take the risk.

Just be inconspicuous. Be natural. However, this is a boy who would be using a female's name. They may get suspicious and think he is trying to flee with the child. At least I would. Or they may just catch on. I'd say go for the long hair and some neon kiddie like sunshades. lol, and tell him not to speak.

I'm going to assume a new ticket will be about $800. You can change it to the actual figure if you don't like that and repeat the discussion.

Let's now look at the situation:

  • Option 1 is to cancel the ticket, obtain a credit, and purchase a new ticket. Worst case is that the credit is not available or can't be used, and you end up paying $800 more than Option 2.

  • Option 2 is to try to pass the kid off as the adult. If successful, you save the added $800 you would spend in option 1.

Frankly, there is one clear conclusion from this. A person who selects Option 2 has put a clear price tag on his or her personal honesty, and that price tag is something less than $800. As a bonus, the person has provided an object lesson to the child that a person's integrity is not very important, certainly something to be put on the shelf if you can gain $800.

Am I being harsh? I think not, but play a game with yourself. How low would the cost savings have to be before you would pick Option 1? Do I hear $500? How about $400? Is someone willing to offer $300? Let's say you would take Option 2 to save $800, but would switch to Option 1 if the savings were only $200. How could any rational person not conclude that you were pricing your personal integrity at $200?

Let's even make the situation simpler. Let's say the deception was guaranteed to work - no personal risk to you. The only people who will ever know about the deception are you and your family. So the situation is absolutely clear and direct - how much money could someone dangle in front of you and get you to act out a lie in exchange for the money?

An honest person does not engage in lies, deceit, and subterfuge as a matter of policy and pride. Honest people can't be bought and they don't compromise their integrity for a pittance.

In my life I have seldom regretted taking the high road, even though there was short term cost and pain. I have often regretted taking the low road, finding that the immediate gain was ephemeral and that the low road usually dead ends in a swamp.

If she can't travel due to a medical reason most airlines will work with you.
I have been able to get tickets refunded for my Mother and Aunt that were non-refundable when they could not travel due to medical conditions.

If its not a medical reason pleading your case to a customer service agent might still work.
It can take alot of work making several phone calls to get the right agent. I was able to do this once with America West.
